Are you always complaining about your spine and back always being stiff and tight? The spine consists of several different segments that were designed to be rigid and mobile. Gently mobilizing the different areas of the spine can help promote healthy movement in the joints and help with general stiffness. Remember that you are only as old as your spine feels! 1️⃣ 𝗦𝗘𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗗 𝗪𝗜𝗡𝗗𝗠𝗜𝗟𝗟𝗦: Sit on a chair or bench with the legs spread apart and bent to roughly 90 degrees. Lean forward and lock the back of the hand beside the opposite foot. Reach the opposite hand towards the ceiling while following your fingertips with your eyes. 2️⃣ 𝗖𝗛𝗜𝗟𝗗𝗦 𝗣𝗢𝗦𝗘 & 𝗖𝗔𝗧 𝗖𝗔𝗠𝗘𝗟: Start on all fours with your hands underneath your shoulders. Sit back onto your heels with the legs spread apart. Round the spine while tucking your head in between your knees. Fully extend the spine and look ahead and repeat. 3️⃣ 𝗞𝗡𝗘𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗣𝗜𝗡𝗘 𝗘𝗫𝗧𝗘𝗡𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡: Start by tall kneeling on the ground with the knees roughly shoulder width apart. Cup the same side heel with the hand while extending the spine backwards. Reach up towards the ceiling with your free hand and repeat on the opposite side. 4️⃣ 𝗖𝗢𝗦𝗦𝗔𝗖𝗞 𝗦𝗤𝗨𝗔𝗧 𝗧𝗢 𝗥𝗢𝗧𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡: Start standing with the feet further than shoulder width apart. Squat down towards one leg while simultaneously straightening out the trailing leg. Drop the knee of the bent leg down towards the ground and repeat on the opposite side. . Happy Wednesday everyone! With school starting up, crazy work schedules and continued pandemic concerns, Im sure we are all a bit stressed out. Did you know that our gut microbiome and stress/mood are linked? The gut is often called the Second Brain. ⭐There are millions of nerve endings in your intestines that send signals to the brain. ⭐The gut releases neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine which exert a powerful effect on our mood and stress levels. In fact, most of the bodys serotonin is produced in the gut.  ⭐A healthy microbiome can influence both our mood and cognition, as well as improve our energy levels.   ⭐Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or other disruptions to the microbiome can affect quality of life. There is a large overlap in patients with IBS and depression/anxiety. ⭐Animal models have shown that increasing levels of helpful bacteria in the gut can improve the brain-gut axis, modulate neurotransmitter response and reverse stressful behaviors. ⭐There have been small studies in humans where patients who were treated with certain probiotic strains had improvements in chronic fatigue symptoms and stress. Improvements in stress can increase short chain fatty acid production which is anti-inflammatory. More research definitely needs to be done in this arena, but I think that in addition to a healthy diet and daily exercise, meditation and mindfulness are key in managing stress. Ive been doing yoga and meditation practices with stellar @onepeloton crew @diti22 @kristinmcgee @annagreenberg. After I complete this practice, I feel better and am able to manage my stress a bit better. I stopped nursing Beauden pretty recently and I’ve reflected much on my journey. My decision to stop, the differences between children, and also the feelings surrounding topics like breastfeeding and how they tend to impact how we feel as moms. But, I realized. Motherhood invariably changes you the minute you know you want to become a mom or for some, the minute you find out you are becoming a mom. It doesn’t matter how you become a mom, when you become, why you become a mom. All the matters is that you know you want to be one. Right then and there, you are changed. The things that follow after will never take away or dilute that title. 𝐅𝐨𝐨𝐝 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐟𝐞𝐝 👶🏼 ⁣ ⁣ It’s #worldbreastfeedingweek , so I amidst all of the fabulous posts from my colleagues, I thought I would share an important topic that affects some breastfeeding journeys significantly & seems to come with lots of miss conceptions. The answer of course is TRUE! ⁣ 𝐂𝐚𝐧 𝐚 𝐛𝐚𝐛𝐲 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐮𝐦’𝐬 𝐛𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐤?⁣ Yes! Food proteins e.g. cows milk, soya, egg & wheat, are detectable in breast milk(BM) for hours and up to days after consumption. For most 👶🏼 these are tolerated as the content of these allergens in breast milk is much lower than if consuming the food protein directly.⁣ ⁣ Cows milk is the most common allergen, with between 1 in 100-200 babies (0.5-1%) of exclusively breastfed babies estimated to develop IgE-mediated and/or non-IgE mediated allergic symptoms to milk protein (CMPA), which is a much lower incidence than babies who are formula fed. Other allergenic food proteins including egg, soya & wheat can also be transferred through BM⁣, and are traceable in significant amounts to lead to allergic reactions. ⁣ It is important to remember that exposure to these proteins via BM is considered important to the process of developing tolerance in infants - meaning if an infant can tolerate maternal inclusion of food proteins e.g. milk/egg/soya/wheat they should not be cut out unnecessarily. ⁣ ⁣ For example, in cases where babies react to a food protein during weaning e.g. Cow’s milk in food, whilst they may need to eliminate it from their diet there is no need for mum to remove milk from her diet if baby has tolerated via BM thus far.⁣ The cornerstone of diagnosis for delayed type (nonIgE mediated) allergy, is maternal exclusion of suspected allergen for 2-4 weeks followed by reintroduction - monitoring for resolution & subsequent relapse of symptoms respectively. ✨My yoga journey: PART 1: I was first drawn to Yoga around the age of 17. I began attending Bikram Yoga, and I loved it because I felt like I was working HARD. At the time I was constantly pushing myself physically and mentally as I undertook full-time dance training, so being pushed in different ways through this style of yoga training felt really satisfying. It was also nice to go somewhere with no music, and not have to strain my brain to remember choreography. Everyone at the studio was super calm, open and friendly. This was a pleasant change to the competitive environment of the dance studios I was attending at the time. A few years later, after returning from a few overseas working dance contracts, I found myself going through some emotional upheavals after a tumultuous couple of years. After powering through the loss of a parent, grandparent and the breakdown of a long term relationship, I found myself feeling very out of sorts, lost and confused. Seeking calm, friendly people again, I headed back to the yoga studio, this time a new studio that had popped up in my area. They offered different classes to what I was used to. Their classes were far easier for me than the intense and hot Bikram yoga classes I had become accustomed to. Physically I found the classes easy, but I always left feeling so calm. Wanting more of this calm in my life, I started attending different yoga studios all over melbourne and in fact all over the world. As my dance and performance career took me on trips around Australia, and I would spend two-three months in each capital city, I would explore different studios and teachers wherever I went. My yoga education was therefore not linear, as in, I didn’t study under one style or teacher or guru for any long amount of time. I see this as both positive and negative. I feel I learned a lot about teaching styles in this way, but my yoga education, particularly in yoga philosophy, was disjointed. - @workinwithstef on Instagram

So... Lungs and RA can be mild or complicated... I guess I sit in the complicated department. I have learned to just go with the flow! As most of you see, I appear to be THRIVING (especially in my @thrive_construction shirts) on most days!😉) Like a lot of us, there are so many aspects to this disease that people outside of our homes would never know. I don’t show you guys every minute of my day, but I do talk a lot about my daily routine and what can be expected! People who develop RA-related scarring and interstitial lung disease often have a poor prognosis. That sounds terrible right “poor prognosis!”🙄 Thanks for that... If that didn’t sound awesome to you, then this next line might shock you! According to research that looked at a number of studies, the median survival rate for people with interstitial lung disease due to RA was 3.2 years to 8.1 years from the time of diagnosis.🤔This use to freak me out, but honestly I stopped worrying about the years, what doctors say, and just concentrated on ME and what I want from this one chance we get! I try my imperfect best every day! This not only over-engages the upper trap muscles, which tend to be overdeveloped already, but it also puts the shoulders in a vulnerable position. If you ever experience shoulder discomfort during pushups, this positioning error may be the cause! - In the bottom photo, you can see that I have “anti-shrugged” my shoulders by creating space between my upper traps and ears. This helps to engage the lat muscles and relaxes the upper traps. I also have my elbows closer to my body, pointing about 45 degrees away, which helps to keep my shoulders in a more optimal position! ‪Good sleep is essential to your health, & an important part of your overall well-being. Studies have found that people who ranked their quality of life very good or excellent slept an average of 18 to 23 minutes longer than those who considered their health & quality of life poorer. We don’t often think about our spines when we’re lying in bed. But our sleep posture can help determine whether or not we experience back pain. Certain sleeping positions can help ease back pain, so find one that is most comfortable for you. Try sleeping with a pillow between or underneath your legs for extra support. If you sleep on your side, put the pillow between your knees & draw them up slightly toward your chest. If you like to sleep on your back, try the pillow under your knees, or roll up a small towel & place it under the small of your back. Avoid sleeping on your stomach because it puts a lot of strain on your back. If it’s the only position you can fall asleep in, put a pillow under your stomach to take some of the pressure off your back. Majority of sleep research has been performed in whites of European descent & very little sleep research has been done in Black & Latinx communities. However, based on the available literature & the high prevalence of risk factors in Latinx & Black communities, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, depression muscle pain, stress, living in the inner city, & use of alcohol, the prevalence of important sleep disorders such as obstructive sleep apnea & sleep habits such as poor sleep hygiene are suspected to be, unfortunately, high. Is your baby being fussier than usual? Is your baby cluster feeding? Change in sleep patterns? Then may be your baby is going through a growth spurt. Baby growth spurts can happen anytime during the first year, most likely : Between 1 and 3 weeks Between 6 and 8 weeks 3 months 6 months 9 months While every baby is different, growth spurts usually last only a couple days, so your baby (and your life) should get back to normal soon. Janav went through one around the 3rd month. He got more hungry (cluster fed) and barely slept during the day (cat naps)I found that after a day or two, the milk supply catches up (if you are breastfeeding) and the baby settles back into eating less often but more at each feeding. And with me? I got more hungry (as always haha) and thirsty. We’ve not had sleep regressions so far. Hoping we sail through the 9th month as well. Your baby is just being a baby, and your job now is to feed them and comfort them. SERRATUS PLANK PROGRESSIONS FOR BULLETPROOF SHOULDERS Serratus anterior is an important muscle that controls how well our shoulder blade moves as we raise our arm overhead. Without this muscle functioning properly, pain with overhead pressing is a given. This simple bodyweight serratus anterior plank progression can be incorporated into a warmup or as a training exercise to get this muscle going. Its quite literally impossible to not have this muscle engaged when doing this exercise. I love the pike position progression because it really challenges your core and gets you into an overhead position (if you were in pain) relatively pain-free. KEY POINTS: Be sure to let your shoulder blades passively tuck together and not move any other part of the body. MAINTAIN tension! HOW MANY? High repetitions, with lots of holds at the top. Food addiction is not real. That may be controversial.. or some may argue that is insensitively say, but I feel it’s a reality and shouldn’t be tip toed around to simply spare feelings. Behind every person who is drastically overweight is a person who has a lot of bottled up emotions they are afraid to confront. That is my belief. All humans have emotions. All humans feel emotions are hard. Those deep rooted things that sit in front of you and make you feel uncomfortable are things we would prefer to just set aside and pretend are not there. When we are uncomfortable we look for something to regain some of that “feel good” sensation. Something to coddle us, if you will. Enter food. It’s always there. It doesn’t judge you. It makes you feel good (hello dopamine rush!) .. for that moment.. and it distracts you enough that you can forget about those tricky emotions. Problem is that those emotions then stay there, potentially get bigger, and end up having us repeat that cycle over and over again. For some, that relationship ends up contributing to health problems down the line. People are not addicted to food, rather they are terrified to confront emotions and simply want a mode of distraction. All addictions are coping mechanisms. The fear of facing real, raw emotions is too much so we hide behind our addiction. Food is no different. It’s the rug we sweep those emotions under. It’s the wool we put over our eyes. Now you may ask why I’m even talking about this. You may say, well Chelsea the world is a tough place, I deserve something to make it easier. We all deserve comforts. While I’m not going to say we don’t deserve comforting things, I’m not going to stand here saying chronic over use of those comforts is doing us any favours. Humans need to “embrace the suck” (thanks for the saying @nickbarefitness) when it comes to feeling and dealing with emotions. You can’t live your life just hiding those away or they will destroy you, whether that is from your “addiction” causing health problems or whether it’s that emotion just gets too big you can’t ignore it anymore. Here’s the deal for you baseball players. Thoracic mobility is great and all, but there also needs to be 𝐄𝐐𝐔𝐀𝐋 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐁𝐈𝐋𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐜 and full trunk container, too!! Loosey goosey is no bueno, dudes. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ You might be doing yoga or other moves that wring you out like a wet clubhouse towel when you wind it up to whip your teammate (trust me, I’ve heard some stories). But 𝐘𝐎𝐔 𝐃𝐎𝐍’𝐓 𝗪𝐀𝐍𝐓 𝐓𝐎 𝐆𝐄𝐓 𝗪𝐑𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐎𝐔𝐓, 𝐏𝐄𝐎𝐏𝐋𝐄, especially in the thoracic spine. Yes, you want mobility, but it’s different than exhaling on a twist to wring yourself out as far as you can possibly go. If you’re doing that, please listen up (𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘥𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵!).⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ In order for your spine to rotate effectively, efficiently, and SAFELY in order to 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫 in your swings and throws - it not only needs the ability to do so from a flexibility standpoint, but you also 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐧𝐞, hips, core, pelvic floor, (and others) to be able to withstand the constant twisting through the 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐬. ⁣⁣⁣ ⁣⁣⁣ The moves in this video are some of the 𝘢𝘥𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘴 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘢 𝘥𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘱𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘦𝘴 𝘐 𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘤𝘩 𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘺 𝘮𝘰𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘤𝘭𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘴 - we work on core muscles that I guarantee you haven’t worked like we do in my sessions.
