Just a few key elements to consider here. Communication research goes back more than 100 years. Put down the oversimplified pop science ājust tell āem how much you careā stuff and dive in to actually strategy and youāll realize how far we have yet to go to truly master this skill. Eventually, poor communication will cost all of us one or more of the following: a relationship, a job, money, an opportunity to help more people, or even a better understanding of ourselves. So why are so many reactive towards learning more about it? Because they donāt know what they donāt know. Ignorance is bliss, and when things fall apart, itās always easier to blame the other person. True professionals take accountability. True professionals know skilled communication isnāt something we are just āborn with.ā True professionals invest in the intangibles. Listen, I get it. Nothing about communication seems sexy. Yet it underpins everything we do. Iām well aware training videos and flashy content gets more ālikesā tags and shares. I could care less. My mission is to open peopleās eyes to the seemingly little things that cost us a great deal everyday. Poor communication nearly cost me my life as a teenager. During a time when I needed it most, people couldnāt get through to me, nor could I get through to them. So I rotted in a hospital for nearly a year in total. Eventually I found a way out. This led me to going down a path in coaching so I could optimize the health and performance of others who needed help. What allowed me to do this wasnāt technology and fancy training methods, it was the ability to communicate, gain true buy-in and build relationships cultivated by urgency and transparency. Better communication = less wasted time, more goals achieved and yes- even lives saved. The pandemic we are experiencing is an example of this. What happens when people donāt understand what to do? They have to improvise and communicate to the best of their ability. Separate yourself by seeing whatās in front of you, not what is the flavor of the week. The son of a pharmacist, Normās career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchieās Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and yearsā¦ it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007. This was taken several years ago on my first trip to Austin in the middle of February. I was super excited to see the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue as heās is my favorite guitarist of all time. One of the things I was looking forward to is taking my family to the statue, because itās in a great area to walk and have a picnic- plus I wanted to have a photo of my youngest son Axl whoās middle name is Vaughn after SRV. (Yes I know the spelling isnāt the name). One day hopefully soon while itās warm and lush with greenery, my family and I will be able to go to the park see the statue, have a picnic with friends and not have to wear masks etc. Iām hopeful for those brighter days ahead.
