2/3, from a window seat at 30,000 feet. I miss flying. I’ll keep this one short compared to the last post. We’re in week 7 of things feeling and being different and I hope you’re all safe, healthy, and sane out there. I shot these cloud photos flying back from Thanksgiving in Asheville, NC. with Kristine and this was somewhere over Charlotte on the way back to LA. We had just burst through some low storm clouds and caught the dying light of the sunset over the wild cotton candy landscape below. That’s one of the cool things about flying west as the sun goes down; you get to hang onto that sunset for just a little while longer than folks on the ground. Getting a good shot takes a lot of work. Early wake ups, location scouting, and gear preparation are all must dos. However, sometimes, luck is also an essential factor. I would definitely say I lucked out on this morning. For a short period of time during sunrise, the sun rays hit the forest infant of me at a perfect angle, peaking through the trees into the mist. Out of my 4 years of photography, this was my first time seeing such strong rays. I spent 10 minutes shooting this scene before it quickly disappeared. ETIQUETTE... RESPECT... PECKING ORDER.... one needs to surf with proper etiquette in order to be respected and then work your way up the pecking order. I’m not sure how it is at your favorite surf spots? I would trade wave quality for an empty line up any day. The line ups are full of surfers that lack respect and etiquette these days. Back in the 80’s as I was growing up, if you didn’t have respect and didn’t know your place in the line up... you were taught real quick and if you didn’t get it.... well you probably got convinced by an old school Uncle that you’re better off taking up another sport. 👊🏼💪🏽👊🏼 Wasn’t always the best approach. But it did keep order. How do we teach etiquette to a new generation surfers (old and young) that think they’re entitled to just drop in and lip off? Or am I the one that’s acting entitled by asking such a question???? Dont get me wrong, Im incredibly grateful for a lot of things. We have a house with enough space for all of us to have our own space. We have a garden to play and swim in. We have beautiful trails outside our front door to walk on and the ocean to dip our feet in. Weve had the time to enjoy the advantages of a slower pace to life. We have a government who is looking out for us and keeping us safe. And most importantly, we have each other and we have our health. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ But its been seven months of staying positive. Of being strong. Of doing the right thing. Of worrying about things that are out of our control. Of not having face to face to contact with our family and friends. Of not being allowed to do the things we love. Of riding a daily emotional rollercoaster. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There is a lightness now with spring in the air and numbers on the decline, but our energy is still heavy. La settimana scorsa ho avuto l’ennesimo esaurimento nervoso che mi ha portato a stare molto male. Ho abusato di varie droghe e farmaci, presi ingenuamente nel tentativo di colmare dei vuoti della mia persona, andando in overdose. Non è facile parlare di argomenti che hanno una vena intima alle persone sui social e non amo mostrarmi nella mia fragilità. Per me tutto doveva essere sempre perfetto, ma arrivato a questo punto credo fermamente che la vera forza sia mostrare alla luce del sole le proprie debolezze, per tentare di cicatrizzare il dolore. Credo che il passo più importante sia quello di liberarsi da ogni corazza, per poter essere più leggeri e quindi di conseguenza più disposti ad aiutarsi e a dare una mano agli altri. Ho capito quanto la vita sia importante, l’universo mi ha dato modo di guardarmi dentro, dall’alto. Mi ha concesso una seconda chance. La vita è un bene prezioso che non va sprecato con mezzi artificiali. Per me ora inizia un processo di guarigione e di crescita vera e propria, allinsegna della positività. Se siete colmi di odio io cercherò di trasformarlo in amore. Non giocate con le droghe, con l’alcool, gli psicofarmaci, non giocate con la vita. Se avete dei problemi fatevi forza e nel primo momento lucido, parlatene con qualcuno di fiducia, non chiudetevi nell’ombra e sconfiggete il male prima che sia a lui a uccidere voi. (Continued from Yesterday) There were three boats headed out to the private island where the kids (in the picture/swipe) would be bought, two boats full of kids, and another boat with traffickers and @timballard89 (undercover of course). I’ll spare you the details of the operation, other than to say that the kids knew exactly what was supposed to happen on the island. They had been through this before. Imagine, if you can, the lowness of an existence where you are bought and sold- enslaved. On one of the boats prior to launching, one of the older girls (probably 15 years-old) gathered in a group of kids and they prayed aloud. We got to the island, the kids got off the boat, they were ushered into a big room where they were to wait. They waited for an hour or so while the traffickers, being secretly recorded, talked themselves into an indefensible case. When the Colombian SWAT teams emerged from the bushes and took everyone down at gunpoint, the kids were still in the room. They had a little window and were able to see what was happening. Once the real traffickers were taken away on Police boats, we were uncuffed and quickly ushered to our boat to get out of there. But as we were boarding the boat cries, laughter, and cheers, rang out from where the kids were… one of the Colombian aftercare workers told them what had happened and that they were now freed. Here’s the point, even though their captors were gone, these kids still face a long road to recovery and trust. Many of them were going back to bad home situations and poverty. So why the joyful cries? It’s because the nature of joy isn’t in a destination, it’s in movement. It’s how a cancer survivor finds joy in signs of remission even after chemo has ravaged her body. It’s how a starving village finds joy in a little bit of rain. Joy is found in moving from any condition to a righteously better one. We are devastated to report that Big Basin State Park, as we have known it, loved it, and cherished it for generations, is gone. Early reports are that the wildfire has consumed much of the park’s historic facilities. We do not yet know the fate of the park’s grandest old trees. We feel like we have lost an old friend. And we imagine that many of you will feel the same way. For millions of people, Big Basin is the place where they first experienced the majesty of the redwoods — where they were humbled and inspired standing amidst a grove of towering trees that have stood resolute for thousands of years. Those memories will live on. For Sempervirens Fund, these wildfires strike at the heart of our legacy as a forest conservation organization and the state’s first land trust. We were founded in 1900 to advocate for the State of California to purchase coast redwood forests to prevent them from being destroyed to satiate the voracious demand for lumber at the time. Our origin story is forever intertwined with the establishment of the iconic Big Basin Redwoods State Park, California’s first state park. And Big Basin’s origin story is forever intertwined with that of the creation of California’s State Park System – which has been a model that inspired many other networks of protected land around the nation. We do not know exactly what the future holds, but we do know that coast redwoods are remarkably resilient, thrive even during adverse conditions, and are naturally fire-adaptive.
