One poisonous bite from the Golden Lancehead pit viper is enough to kill a grown man within a few hours. Its fast-acting venom will burn through flesh and cause its victim to bleed to death.These are highly venomous snakes but since the golden lancehead only inhabits an area uninhabited by humans, there has never been a recorded bite by one. ​But other lancehead species are responsible for more human deaths than any other snakes in both North and South America. . . . . . . . . I always unite snakes with mossy logs when I find them in proximity to one another. 😂 Dallas has more natural areas/parks than almost any other major urban area in the country, which I’m very happy about. Especially the natural areas near the Trinity River. I also saw a feral hog and piglets, which are cute but destructive..not so happy about that sighting. Although they are rare, the west district of our park is home to some sidewinders. 🐍🐍🐍Because they are so rare here, they are almost never seen but recently one of our field crews spotted a baby sidewinder curled up under a creosote! Sidewinders typically mate in the spring and bear litters of 1-20 live young from mid-August into late November. Okay, this little guy made me jump out my skin😱 and then reach for my camera 😍 Pictured is a gorgeous water moccasin, the world’s only semi-aquatic viper. When threatened, these snakes engage in a threat display called gaping - they’ll curl up and hold their white mouths open wide in an attempt to scare off the aggressor. This is why they’re also known as cottonmouths. You’ll often find these creatures lurking in swampy or drying pond-like areas, like the one underneath the footbridge near our house. Water moccasins are highly venomous and their bites can cause scarring, amputation and, in rare instances, death in humans. But as with any wild animal, they are more scared of us than we are of them. How long Red Sand Boas can grow? Two most referred books Smith (1943) and Snakes of India mention both Sand Boas to be 100cm. maximum. For Common Sand Boa 100cm. is justified but Red Sand Boa grows way too bigger than 100cm. The specimen shown in this picture is 136cm. we got in urban area of Jabalpur. This is not the only specimen that crossed 100cm. I have seen about half dozen individuals in wild and with charmers both which were 120+. Infact this is not the longest I have heard. Some friends from other parts of country occasionally get 140+ size. Red Sand Boa is not the only snake whose mentioned size is lesser than actual size. I have seen the same in Banded Racer where individuals above 150cm. are not rare. Maximum length of snakes is subject of dispute too, there are detailed publications of correct length of largest snakes of world where we can see the difficulty of documenting correct length. In my opinion the most accurate length one can get only by sedating or killing the snake which is too much for just to note length reading. So please dont try to exhaust live snake in attempt to take correct length. Youll anyway not get the actual length and there can be difference of up to 5% from actual length. Just normally take length with the help of unstretchable thread and consider that as acceptable result. He was rifling around. I heard him. A distinguishable rifling noise coming from the back of the trailer. Rifling is an unmistakable sound. A shuffle. A movement. Another shuffle. It occurred to me I had a stowaway. A varmint. A rifler amongst me. Sure, I found him. Sure, I picked him up. Yes, I was tempted to measure him. I didn’t. Of course I fought back the great urge to make a mock sound of a whip cracking as I held him over my kingdom of eggs in what could only be described as the penultimate assertion of dominance of man over beast. I didn’t. Of course I didn’t. After all is he king or am I? Perhaps neither of us. Both of us. Hell I don’t know. No sir, in the end I found a certain poetry just holding him for a minute. We didn’t talk nor share any sort of tangible bond but I did notice he winked at me as I let him go. My whole life I’ve held few things to be more true than the rhythms of the wild and yes indeed that includes the serpent. Truth be told he was happy to slither away and I to watch him. Off presumably to crawl into some unsuspecting toilet bowl or maybe under your covers tonight as you sleep. I’m kidding. Or am I? Only one way to find out. The rhythm abides. The rhythm of life. This blue-tailed Skink also known as a Western Skink (Plestiodon skiltonianus) was spotted at Edgewood Park. This lizard is easy to identify because of its brightly colored blue tail. As beautiful as their tail is, its real purpose is to work as a defense mechanism. Skinks are a type of lizard but when they move quickly, they also wriggle their body in a snake like fashion. This wriggling flashes their bright blue tail around, inviting predators to snatch it. Once a predator grabs hold, the Skink can detach its tail and escape while its predator is left with less of a meal than it expected. Exciting find last night! We got some summer thunderstorms in the mountains near Los Angeles so we decided to go see if anything was moving. The area we went to was still bone dry and we couldn’t reach the rain areas bc of wildfires. While driving, I thought I saw a gopher snake (very common here) but it turned out to be a lyre snake!! These are much less commonly seen! My first time to see them in this area, we got 2 of them, and my biggest one yet!! Check out the iridescent scales on its head. These cool rear-fanged snakes are usually harmless to humans, and I’ve been bitten with no effect. But after seeing a friend @dingo_dinkelman nearly die from an allergic reaction to a practically harmless snake, I don’t let them chew on me. I don’t want to end up allergic as well. FWC biologist Pierson Hill recently documented an extremely unusual “patternless” eastern diamondback rattlesnake in north Florida, which he then microchipped and released safely for identification by researchers in the future. This color morph is exceptionally rare – only a small handful of patternless diamondbacks have been documented by biologists. The photos show this patternless diamondback, with a normal eastern diamondback for comparison. Pierson says it is very likely that this patternless trait is heritable given that it has popped up several times in this population and it’s likely that both parents need to contribute one or more recessive (“hidden”) gene copies to create patternless offspring. While eastern diamondbacks are venomous and should be treated with caution, they are one of only 6 venomous species of snakes in the state. Native snakes like this one are beneficial to the ecosystem: eastern diamondbacks have an important role in controlling rodent populations, consuming several species of mice, rats, squirrels, and even rabbits. They have been documented eating prey weighing as much as 85% the snake’s body weight! Pointed Scale Viper / Habu (Protobothrops mucrosquamatus) Actively aggressive and dangerously venomous, these T-3000 snakes will strike at literally anything that is in range (or not, they just love striking!), regardless if it’s a lizard, a bird or your ankle. Dwells in thick vegetation and rock cracks and can also perch on horizontal branches. I normally encourage a positive vibe about snakes and still do with this particular species, but I cannot stress it enough these are veracious predators and every precaution should be taken!!! Although it has a large range from Tawain to India, Habus are extremely rare in Hong Kong with only a few highly populated locations. It’s unsure why there is a small local population here aside from pet releases, but [for now] they don’t seem to pose any threat to HK’s ecology. Russells viper is a venomous snake found in Asia. The species is named for Patrick Russell, a Scottish herpetologist who first described many of Indias snakes. In Bengali, this snake is called Chandroborha since it carries lenticular or more precisely lunar marks all over its body. Apart from being a member of the big four snakes in India, Russells viper is also responsible for causing the most snakebite incidents and deaths among all venomous snakes. Talk about a dinger 🤘🏼, Yesterday while I was at my dentists appt, I was placed in the first exam room, which coincidentally has one of my better-halfs original paintings hanging on the wall. By happenstance I had brought some stickers with me for Dr.Ford. Mid appointment he points at the framed painting on the wall and says, can you make that into a sticker?. Happy #WorldSnakeDay 🐍 Today we have a great opportunity to clear up misconceptions surrounding our scaly friends and emphasise their importance in nature. It’s common to hear about how aggressive this one snake was and that it even chased someone. However, that is far from the truth. As Clifford Pope, a famous herpetologist once put it: “snakes are first cowards, then bluffers and last of all warriors”. Snakes are also incredibly important ecologically as prey and predator but also of great benefit for humans. By controlling rodents populations, snakes stop diseases from spreading and entering our homes. Additionally, snake venom is used to produce many medically significant drugs such as antivenin and blood thinners and is even used to treat diabetes. So overall, snakes aren’t malicious or aggressive and only act defensively when there’s no other way, they will always prefer to flee. They are incredibly important in nature and for humans alike. We have to learn how to behave around snakes like we learn how to behave around each other in order to mitigate negative outcomes. Most snakebites occur when people try to kill a snake and so ultimately puts you in more danger than just leaving it be. The only GOOD snake is a LIVE snake! . . . Honoured that our very own Sahana Ghosh and our contributor Anup Sharma were part of the The Pangolin Reports project which won the SOPA 2020 Awards - Award for Excellence in Reporting on the Environment Regional (English Language) Media. As part of this reporting project, more than 30 journalists from Asia and Africa investigated the illegal trade of the worlds most trafficked mammal - the #pangolin. Pangolins are small, solitary, largely nocturnal mammals known for their distinctive, armadillo-like appearance. The animal and their scales are smuggled through India’s northeastern states to Myanmar and then onto China and other countries, reported Sahana Ghosh. Tamil settlements in Manipur and their relatives in other states form a crucial link in this chain. Im writing this post as an awareness fact. One early morning in June, I found a dead Russels viper snake right infront of my home. I speculated that it was a roadkill as the head of the snake was smashed in. As a person who has always loved and worshipped snakes, I was sad about its state but I longed to touch it and feel its skin on my hand. Also as it was dead I wanted to pick it up and put it in a field so that it can be a meal for a few predators. With a lot of excitement I picked up the snake by its tail and put it in the field. I felt like it felt exactly how I imagined it would. I felt its scales. It was an exciting moment. It was later that I realised what I did was highly dangerous and life threatening. The snake could have easily bitten me. Naturally my face fell and I got scared out of my wits. I could not stop thinking what if it had bitten me?. I hope this post helps people understand that what I did was a huge mistake. Im trying to say two things through this post. 1. Never ever pick up a dead snake. It can be fatal. 2. Please be cautious while driving. If roadkills like this keep happening we will lose many beautiful local species. The Sonoran Desert region includes semi-tropical and sub-tropical biomes in the canyons and mountains of the Sierra Madre of southern Sonora and Chihuahua. They are home to plants and animals not seen any further north, like Mastigodryas cliftoni. Only a handful of specimens have been reported in Sonora. It is easily one of the most beautiful snakes in the region. Of course, the evening that I dont bring my Nikon with me I see the largest eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) Ive ever seen at Conservation Park. Estimated to be about 6 ft, I almost stepped on this gorgeous snake when I walked in the grass to avoid a mini lake in the trail and CLEARLY wasnt paying attention to this dude chilling in the grass, very well camouflaged🤦. DESERT AMBUSH 🏜️ : This amazing snake is an Arabian Horned Viper (Cerastes gasperettii) Buried in a typical ambush pose. The Arabian horned viper is a venomous snake that reaches up to 90 CM in length, making it the biggest species of its genus - cerastes. Its called a horned viper because in most of its middle eastern habitats it does actually have a set of horn like scales on top of its eyes. And yet, for some reason the population in the Arava valley in Israel do not have these horns, making them hornless horned vipers... Rest stop herping!! Stopped for a rest on I-40 and decided to walk the fence line at the rest stop, was 77 degrees, late in the evening, just as storms were moving in. I flipped my lifer milk snake, a western milk snakes aka New Mexico milk by the older taxonomy and it is a stunning locality/subspecies!! A crow landed nearby very upset that I wouldn’t give it the snake!! Was made even more special as I had seen a dor (dead on road, in Herper speak) the night before in Arizona with @civdivision and was pretty upset. Fridays always deliver surprises! Today it was baby Southern Pacific Rattle Snakes (Crotalus oreganus helleri). There is one rattlesnake near the Growing Space who we see often, and who seems to have accepted our presence. We say hello and give her plenty of room. We thought (and hoped!) her bulging waist came from helping control the gopher population (the gophers eat lots of our restoration plantings). Today, when a volunteer checked in on her, he found her with six little ones. ⠀ Southern Pacific Rattlesnakes are ovoviviparous. The mother keeps the fertilized eggs inside for 90 days before giving birth to live young. Litters can have 4 to 12 young who stay in the area for about two weeks, which is around the time of their first molt, before moving on. ⠀ It was exciting to see the babies, but we will now be even more careful when working in the area, giving the snakes their space to grow. ⠀ Can you find the snakes in the last photo? Esta mañana -muy cerca del mirador #Pajonal y las oficinas nuestros guardaparques- apareció una culebra de cola larga. Algo que no es habitual (porque no es fácil de observar) y que nos alegró muchísimo. Uno de nuestros guardaparques la tomó sin mayores problemas y muy suavemente, para observarla, evaluar sus condiciones y registrar su bella visita. Se trataba de una Phylodrias chamissonis adulta -la mayor de las culebras chilenas- en un muy buen estado y con casi 1.2 metros de largo. Despite increased protections, #pangolin scale seizures are at an all time high amidst the #COVID19 pandemic. A new report by the Center for Advanced Defense Studies, provides new data and details that show the trade in African pangolins to Asia for traditional medicine continues to grow. Last year, not only were more pangolin scales seized globally than in any other year for which data is available, but it also saw the biggest individual seizures of pangolin scales on record. Within a single week in April, Singapore intercepted a 14.2-ton shipment and a 14-ton shipment, estimated to be from more than 70,000 pangolins. Chris Hamley, senior pangolin campaigner for @EIAEnvironment, says illegal trade may have increased because as smugglers have shifted from Asian pangolins to African ones, there was an existing supply chain they could co-opt. “In Africa, there was already the bushmeat trade chains that have pangolins, and so it was almost like a natural byproduct,” Hamley says. Something to lift your spirits at this moment in the time. This picture was taken a month ago at Pescadero marsh and was the result of a total accident. Normally coast fence lizards know to be wary of human presence, and this one was no different. However this peculiar fellow seemed to have been momentarily confused, and for some reason or another decided my shoe was an appropriate place to camouflage himself. I can’t really blame him, he blends right in to my yellow-painted footwear! Remember to avoid disturbing or handling wildlife when visiting state parks.
