Decades ago we decided to ditch the commercial varieties & started growing varieties that require a TON of care and give you limited harvest in return.....But one bite of @harrysberries is all it takes to understand why we made this decision.🌈🌈🌈 Our Strawberry varieties produce about 80% less than that of a commercial Strawberry.🌱🌼🍓 January to July is a whirlwind (like always & extra due to Covid-19) & we are officially in our off-peak Season. August means, juggling the extremely limited supply of the Gaviota Variety Strawberry and the start of the Seascape Variety Strawberry.🍓 Our tomatoes, beans, and zucchini squash are producing full force🦸♂️🦸♀️ and we transition out of Retail Stores with the strawberries BECAUSE there just isnt ENOUGH producing in the fields, it happens every year. In this photo, you can see the plants are tiny. Raspberry Upside-Down Cake Simple Syrup - 2/3 of a cup of sugar - ½ a cup of water Cake Mix - 140g of butter - ½ a cup of caster sugar - 3 eggs - ¾ of a cup of self-raising flour - 1 tsp of freshly ground almonds - 2 tbsp of Cointreau - 1 tsp baking powder Extra - 400g of frozen raspberries Simple Syrup Method Melt the sugar in water in a small saucepan over low heat until the sugar dissolves. Boil the syrup until it turns golden brown. Immediately pour into a lightly greased 20cm round cake tin. Pour the frozen raspberries on top. Cake Mix Method Preheat the oven at 190 degrees Celsius on fan forced. Cream the butter and sugar until it becomes pale. Add the eggs one at a time and whisking well. Sift the flour and baking powder and fold into the mix. Grind the almonds. Add them to the mix as well as the Cointreau. Pour the mix over the raspberries. Place in the oven and bake for 45-55 minutes. When cooked, run a knife around the tin. Place a plate on top of the cake tin. Hold it in position and flip. On an earlier visit, Palisa pointing in the distance “that patch is harder to get to but has the best berries, I couldnt even see how you would reach them and though oh no, Ben will take that as a personal challenge to forage! Haha 🌱PRODUCE FUN FACT In Australia, there are just eight indigenous species (compared to much more diversity in northern hemisphere). The native fruits are a bit less juicy/plump than commonly known supermarket raspberries, but it means they last longer in the fridge too 🌱RECIPE FUN FACT These will be make their way on to the menu, probably dessert, probably preserves. The ideas werent fully formed at the time of picking, but that feels indicative of the “rapid response unit” kitchen that jumps on unique availability wins and figures it out later. Jack-in-the Pulpit is one of our favorite plants to spot each spring and a fun flower for children to identify with its leaf-hood and tiny person inside. In late summer and early fall, this iconic native species puts on another show with its bright red berries that stand out on the woodland floor. In bloom, the flower of the Jack-in-the-Pulpit is actually hidden inside the plant, on the spadix, inside the pitcher. The spathe or leaf-hood covers the spadix, protecting the flower from rainwater that would otherwise wash away its pollen. Insects, such as gnats, pollinate the flower when they are drawn into the pitcher by the fungal smell the plant emits. Although this plant mimics a pitcher-plant, Jack-in-the-Pulpit is not carnivorous. In late summer, after pollination, showy red berries form in large clumps that ripen in the fall and have the consistency of a ripe tomato. The berries are an attractive food source for birds, such as wood thrushes, wild turkeys and ring-necked pheasants as well as small mammals, who spread the plants seeds after ingesting the berries. Each berry contains 1 to 5 seeds. While Jack-in-the-Pulpit is an intriguing plant in both spring and fall, it is important to note that it is toxic and can be dangerous to humans. Its leaves and fruit contain calcium oxalate that can cause swelling and burning sensations in the mouth, throat, stomach and skin when ingested or touched. Native Americans learned how to prepare this plant for medicinal purposes by cooking different parts of it, however, it is important to note that this plant should not be ingested raw. We are opening the blueberry fields for Pick Your Own TODAY! • • • The minimum purchase for adults will be two quarts of blueberries and one quart for each child. We are implementing a minimum to emphasize that blueberry picking this year is about safely harvesting food, not just a leisure activity. We are looking for our best blueberry customers to come pick this year! • • • The price is $7.50/quart. People who want to pick more than the minimum will pay $2.95/lb and can bring their own containers or pick into one provided by us. • • • 10% Discount if you pick over 20 lbs! • • • We will require masks in the field as it is very difficult to always maintain 6’ distances. Eating is not permitted in the fields, and masks must be warn while picking. • • • We will assign customers to row, in order to maximize social distance in the field. Is there a National Blackberry Day? Asking for a friend. You guys...my best friend and I picked ELEVEN cups of berries today. We have been picking berries together for the last 5 years and this year has been the best crop we’ve ever seen. These brambles are absolutely bursting with berries and though we picked 11 cups today, I estimate that there’s at least 11 more cups out there, waiting to be picked. We just couldn’t get them all today before it got too hot. I made this cobbler using a recipe from @thepioneerwoman and my mouth is watering as I wait for it to cool enough for me to eat it. Sometimes a simple fruit platter is what I need ❤ it immediately makes me feel like summer + its obviously super healthy and delicious! . . Since this account is supposed to document my journey and everyones journey has its ups and downs, I will shortly inform you about my current kind of down. So in case you have to deal with similar issues right now, YOU ARE NOT ALONE, you will never be alone! . On one hand I am currently struggling with my weight a lot. I basically lost weight although I constantly increased my calorie intake the past weeks. I know its cause, I guess - Its either my compulsion to move or my metabolism adapting to the larger amount of food its getting and speeding up after a long period of being slowed down. . Also, theres a girl in my class who recently lost a lot of weight. I dont know how or if her weight loss is related to her decision to go vegan she made a few months ago. But anyways, I do really worry about her since I perfectly know what a fast weight loss can cause. She claims to be okay but I dont know to what extent its true since we havent met each other face to face in weeks. . As you can notice , I am pretty stuck in my unhealthy thoughts and habits rn + my family basically lost their faith in me, we are currently in a very difficult situation... but of course there are also things that bring me back to the positive side of life: friends who I can always count on, the joy that my planned projects with my new (second hand) sewing machine or journaling brings to me and so many other things I can be grateful about! . Also I wanted to mention that I recently created a list of close friends who I am going to share more personal thoughts with. Poi troviamo una ragione per così dire romantica. Agli albori della civiltà gli ominidi non nascono contadini ma raccoglitori, solo in un momento successivo capiscono che conservando i semi e piantandoli possono costituire campi da dove poter attingere materie prime alimentari. La fase della raccolta, che non può essere altrimenti svolta se non a mano, ci porta ad una dimensione di contatto completamente diversa, fisicamente ci troviamo molto vicini alle piante e con un ritmo molto più lento. Questo non avviene nella raccolta meccanica perchè il trattore funge da filtro tra noi e le piante che andiamo a raccogliere. Questa stretta vicinanza ci permette di scoprire un mondo di piccoli insetti, farfalle, coccinelle, lumache, bruchi, lucertole, ramarri, che popola e compie il ciclo vitale all’interno dell’impianto. Si osserva insomma uno spaccato di biosfera che si svolge proprio li a pochi centimetri da noi, quasi incurante ed indifferente alla nostra presenza.
