Do you #knowhername? As a Mexican-American journalist, activist, and suffragist, Jovita Idár often faced dangerous situations. She single-handedly protected her newspaper headquarters when the Texas Rangers came to shut it down, and crossed the border to serve as a nurse during the Mexican Revolution. Idár bravely fought the injustices in her time. Learn her story at the link in our bio, and help us celebrate #hispanicheritagemonth! #womenshistory - @womenshistory on Instagram

#MondayMotivation - The passing of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg got us thinking about women trailblazers in Canadian law. In 1891, Clara Brett Martin was rejected as a student at the Law Society of Upper Canada. The Society interpreted the use of ‘persons’ in their statute to mean that only men were permitted. Women were not legally considered ‘persons’ in Canada until 1929. With the help of influential leaders such as Dr. Emily Stowe and Premier Oliver Mowat, Martin was finally admitted as a student-at-law in 1893. She faced obstacles again in being admitted as a barrister but succeeded in 1897. She became the first female lawyer in not just Canada, but in the British Empire. She practised law in Toronto and established her own firm on Bay Street in 1906. She helped pave the way for other women in the profession by hiring female articling students and with her involvement with women’s rights organizations. This Gender Equity Week explore the stories of other women who pushed boundaries and broke the glass ceiling on our Lady Action online tour. Our next creator in NYC is Emma Rae Bruml Norton. Welcome to the Residency Program! - Emma Rae Bruml Norton is an artist, coder and researcher who practices programming, writing, teaching, and complicating answers in step with the following questions: which conditions allowed the optical mouse to emerge? How has its emergence shaped entanglements between humans and computers? What is it exactly that the mouse sees and how does this shape what humans see? Emma’s work can be found in the form of listening at Printed Matter, writing at Real Life Magazine and teaching at the School for Poetic Computation. - “The Computer Mouse Sees is a series of discussions and research performances. Throughout the residency I will publicly study and attempt to locate a history of vision embedded within the computer mouse. The project will use ‘The Mother of All Demos’ as its departure. Most importantly the project will sustain, in its materiality and performativity, a departure from Doug Engelbart’s notion of the user. Ultimately the project and its interlocutors will convene online, at times asynchronously, at times in real time, for the second Computer Mouse Conference, co-organized with Ashley Jane Lewis, to be held in the spring of 2021.” — Emma Rae Bruml Norton - https://www.culturehub.org/emma-rae-bruml-norton - @culturehubnyc on Instagram

Happy Birthday, William Faulkner! The man, the myth, the legend was born on this day in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. Shortly before his fifth birthday, the Falkner family relocated to Oxford, where he stayed for much of his life. The Nobel Prize-winning author is best known for his novels that took place in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which was modeled after Lafayette County, Mississippi. While his home in Oxford, Rowan Oak, is currently closed to the public, the grounds and nearby Bailey Woods Trail are open from dawn until dusk daily. #williamfaulkner #rowanoak #oxfordms #olemiss #onthisday #happybirthday #hbd @visitoxfordms @cityofoxfordms @olemiss - @ummuseum on Instagram

#darkpoetry Poem below thank you! #poetry #womenpoetry #womenempowerment #land #animalsofinstagram #poetryofinstagram #authorsofinstagram #poetryporn #birthstory #poetrythepaintedword #myth #streamofconsciousness #confessionalpoetry THE FURY OF BEAUTIFUL BIRTH I am born again from my bone marrow my genitals were a thrush song choked during the sinful wound. Today my bone marrow is singing like a lovebird a wounded deer trying for resurrection a polar bear trying for food sky and ice its teeth tearing open the flesh of my back. Without the blossom of the land I will turn into a fossil or a marble angel on a pedestal above a human grave. Wolves are expecting a new birth in the woods they are also hoping for the hunters death for I cant be born again without a humans death. My own death doesnt count I would turn into a fossil a language for the blind a sparrow mute song. I no longer need my body as it was once. Sing me eat me dream me up like the Big Dipper. Blinking with blood soaked wings I am born from my spine like some wondrous freak from her own flesh. I have become voracious a nuptial of wild animal wounds. In the darkness of seedy streets I lost my arms thighs and mouth. My veins dont need their beacon of heroin my crotch of assorted features is like a frozen flag. Soon love will be a fury of cartilages nerves blood and skin. The woman that I am becoming doesnt need a glass slipper or a Rapunzels braid nor Sleeping Beautys lips to attract a man. Men have become useless like kitchen utensils in my new world. Making love to me is to become one with that winged thing on my back hungry for blood. I am a sculpture of bloody marrow the new land a polar bears throat tearing apart the whole Canada. I have become mythic. ~en copyright Emily Nelson 2020 Art Ray Caesar - @seemadgirlplay on Instagram
