We discovered these boys on a day off from the Judas Priest tour when a band called City Kid opened for us at a club we played in Sacramento. I knew there was something special with them. 5 years later we were on an Arena tour with them after they changed their name to Tesla. Ronnie was always super nice, incredibly funny and always made me feel welcome and seemed to be glad to both be there and have fans around. Unfortunately for me, there is no photographic evidence (that I know of) of me hugging & squeezing the shit out of him like a little metal elfin teddy bear while blubbering about how much I loved him. However, I am grateful that this rushed picture of my friend Amy and I (caught in the middle) was taken with Heaven & Hell backstage in Rochester Hills, MI on Aug 21, 2009 (after making sure a bunch of my radio listeners got their meet & greet photos and I was literally the last in line). I vividly remember how rushed it was and not wanting to bum out Tony, Geezer and Vinny (or my friend) and ask for a solo picture of just Ronnie and I. I totally figured that I would just ask for a “real” RJD solo picture next time, but sadly, there was no next time. Dio passed away from cancer less than 9 months later, on this day, a decade ago. We miss you RJD! In memory of Todd Youth, I’m sharing my display at Tower Records for his band Son Of Sam. He came up with the idea of the alma mater of Samhain, Danzig and some new blood returning to the roots of that music. I met Steve Zing at Tower and he was one of the first people on albums I owned and loved being interested in my art. This lead to doing art for the band as well as his side project, Doomtree AKA Marra’s Drug. Photo by Mike Leberge. - In 1989, Englands Extreme Noise Terror were at the forefront of the crust genre. Having just released their masterpiece A Holocaust In Your Head, there were few bands who rivaled their reputation in the game. Their contemporary brew of aggressive hardcore was distinct and forceful, making waves all the way across the pond into America and inspiring a new crop of groups with their dual-vocal onslaught. Perhaps the most notable of those were Massachusetts band Disrupt. While still relatively new to the scene, they were already playing a style of music that earned them the moniker as the American ENT. Clearly its foolish to try and dispute the obvious similarities, but most seasoned listeners of the genre would bluntly tell you that comparing the two groups is unfathomable and borderline sacrilege. At the very start of their existence, Disrupt vocalists Pete Kamarinos and Jay Stiles were in discussion with their unofficial brothers across the ocean in regards to collaborating on a split EP for their premier release. This record would never materialize, however the bands remained in contact and forged a long distance kinship for years to come. They would eventually go on to collaborate on a project called Disabuse, releasing the sole eponymous EP in 1994. Still, while both bands went on to carve their own niche in the annals of crust history, one cannot help but imagine how this aborted concept played into the ultimate legacy of Disrupt as a standalone, classic band. In an interview with Jay Stiles of Disrupt, we explore how the two bands first came in contact, how the idea for the 7 came about, and why it ultimately never came to fruition. I’m completely devastated by the loss of my lifelong friend and and musical comrade. I truly felt if anyone could beat this horrible Cancer, it would be Frankie. He was the toughest guy I’ve ever known. No fear in him whatsoever. I first played with Frankie in 1981. I’ll so miss our psychic connection on stage as a rhythm section. We shared a common love for Jazz Fusion as well as the mighty Led Zep and others which helped fuse this strong musical bond.
