Swamiji: When I was in Jaipur, I met a great grammarian and felt a desire to study Sanskrit grammar with him. Although he was a great scholar in that branch, he had not much aptitude for teaching. He explained to me the commentary on the first aphorism for three days continuously, still I could not grasp a bit of it. On the fourth day the teacher got annoyed and said, Swamiji, I could not make you understand the meaning of the first aphorism even in three days; I fear, you will not be much benefited by my teaching. Hearing these words, a great self - reproach came over me. Putting food and sleep aside, I set myself to study the commentary on the first aphorism independently. Within three hours the sense of the commentary stood explained before me as clearly as anything; then going to my teacher I gave him the sense of the whole commentary. My teacher, hearing me, said, How could you gather the sense so excellently within three hours, which I failed to explain to you in three days? After that, every day I began to read chapter after chapter, with the greatest ease. Through concentration of mind everything can be accomplished -- even mountains can be crushed to atoms. Disciple: Sir, everything is wonderful about you. Swamiji: There is nothing wonderful in this universe. Ignorance constitutes the only darkness, which confers all things and makes them look mysterious. When everything is lighted by Knowledge, the sense of mystery vanishes from the face of things. Even such an inscrutable thing as Maya, which brings the most impossible things to pass, disappears. Know Him, think of Him, by knowing whom everything else is known. And when that Atman is realised, the purport of all scriptures will be perceived as clearly as a fruit on the palm of ones hand. Insidious behavior and thoughts can be concealed by Southern pleasantries, the pulpits of churches, and suburban attics. I didn’t understand what white supremacy was in 1993, but I knew there was something invisible operating on my body. I could feel that much. My folks never sat me down to talk about it, but I was starting to piece something together from observing their relationships with white folks over the years. I was never called nigger to my face (like my parents were), but you don’t have to be. There’s a zillion other ways to be called that. I was beginning to get that too. I was naive then and running on pure intuition. My need to express some growing unease came out in my pencil, brush, or camera whether I wanted it to or not. My grandparents came to the UK in the 70s, and worked for the NHS until their retirement. Being Indian, but born in Britain, sometimes I feel like I’m straddling two complex and intangible identities, especially when I’m confronted with questions like ’Where are you REALLY from?’ or asked why I’m brown, but have a ‘white’ surname. Like so many, the British empire and its lasting effects in India is entangled in my identity. But there is still a sense of national amnesia when it comes to Britain’s imperial past, an unwillingness to acknowledge what colonialism did and how its legacy lives on today. A false and romanticised version of events is still ingrained in our national story and rooted in our culture. This was clear just yesterday when our PM Boris Johnson proclaimed that we should end our ‘cringing national embarrassment about our history’, encouraging patriotic pride in Britain’s involvement in slavery and colonialism. I *wish* his opinion was uncommon, but a survey found that 59% of the British population think that the atrocities of empire were “something to be proud of”. (YouGov, 2014) It’s kind of unsurprising when you think about how much of our colonial history has been filtered or consciously covered up (google Operation Legacy). Our school curriculum excludes the ‘ugly’ bits of our national past, and this erasure perpetuates white supremacy in our education system and minimises past injustice and racism - further marginalising those whose ancestors have suffered because of it. This year research found that only 9% of GCSE students have studied modules that reference the British empire, and only 11% study modules that acknowledge Black people’s contribution to Britain. It was only when I started studying history at university that I really began to learn the full extent of British imperialism and its ongoing legacy - and there’s still SO much I don’t know. Staying in the same house away from your little heart, just hearing the voice. Could not hug, could not kiss, could not love. A mom heart will only understand it. Kainu was also in fever for 3 days and my ❤ sank when I got to know this. I couldnt touch her, can see her only on video calls or camera. LUCKNOW: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has directed that strictest action should be taken against the culprits involved in Hathras gang-rape incident, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji spoke to me over Hathras incident and he said that strictest action be taken against the culprits, Yogi Adityanath tweeted. Earlier a three-member Special Investigation Team has been formed to probe the matter. The SIT comprises Chairman Secretary Home Bhagwan Swaroop and Chandraprakash, Deputy Inspector General of Police and Poonam, Commander in chief, Provincial Armed Constabulary. Also, Yogi Adityanath gave clear instructions to prosecute and effectively advocate in fast track court against the accused persons. The 19-year-old died in Safdarjung Hospital on Tuesday, after she was gang-raped in Hathras a fortnight ago. The victim was brought to Safdarjung Hospital on Monday from Aligarh Muslim University Medical College. Her earliest memories of her Abba was him sitting on a writing table in his white kurta-pyjama smoking incessantly and writing in the wee hours of the morning. As a child, she was convinced poet was a euphemism for people who dont work! Living in Red Flag Hall, a commune like flat of the Communist Party of India meant the family lived frugally. Her mother Shaukat Azmi worked in Prithvi Thearte and in her absence her Abba fed, bathed and looked after the children. Her mother often rehearsed her lines spontaneously in front of dhobi, cook etc. Shabana got petrified and assumed her mother is turning insane. Her father dropped his work and took her for long walk on beach, he explained to her, her mother has not enough time to rehearse and as a family it is their duty to support her. Shabana was embarrassed about her father while growing up since Kaifi never wore in western clothes or could speak English. It was years later, Shabana finally realised the grandeur of her father. When she finally confided in her father she wants to act, he said I will support you in whatever you choose to do. If you want to become a shoemaker (moochi) I will support you provided you tell yourself that you will try to become the best moochi in the business. One of the heart warming incidence between father and daughter is related to mangoes. When Shabana was young she brought a bag full of mangoes from her friend. Kaifi noticed this but did not say a word. It was 1950s and the family was living frugally. The fact that she survived after facing such a brutal rape shows that she was a fighter. Well, She died but the misery of her family continues to grow everyday. Emperor Ashoka - The Great Empire of India. Ashoka the Great, was an Indian emperor of the Maurya Dynasty, who ruled almost all of the Indian subcontinent from c. 268 to 232 BCE. He was the grandson of the founder of the Maurya Dynasty, Chandragupta Maurya, who had created one of the largest empires in ancient India. One of Indias greatest emperors, Ashoka expanded Chandraguptas empire, and reigned over a realm that stretched from present-day Afghanistan in the west to Bangladesh in the east. It covered the entire Indian subcontinent except for parts of present-day Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Kerala. The empires capital was Pataliputra (in Magadha, present-day Patna), with provincial capitals at Taxila and Ujjain. In about 260 BCE, Ashoka waged a destructive war against the state of Kalinga (modern Odisha). He conquered Kalinga, which none of his ancestors had done. Some scholars suggest he belonged to the Jain tradition, but it is generally accepted that he embraced #Buddhism. Legends state he converted after witnessing the mass deaths of the Kalinga War, which he himself had waged out of a desire for conquest. Ashoka reflected on the war in Kalinga, which reportedly had resulted in more than 100,000 deaths and 150,000 deportations, ending at around 200,000 deaths. Ashoka converted to Buddhism about 263 BCE. He is remembered for the Ashoka pillars and edicts, for sending Buddhist monks to Sri Lanka and Central Asia, and for establishing monuments marking several significant sites in the life of Gautama Buddha. 26th SEPTEMBER 2020 – 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF ISHWAR CHANDRA VIDYASAGAR The 19th century saw the rise of a socio-cultural, intellectual movement in Bengal known as the Bengal Renaissance. This social reform movement saw the rise of various intellectuals who used the medium of creative expression as a dominant mode of promoting and debating about social structure, religion, education. Raja Ram Mohan Roy and Rabindranath Tagore were the major proponents, however, along with them were also Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar, known for his humanistic approach and knowledge in Vedanta philosophy and Sanskrit. Born on 26th September 1820, Ishwar Chandra, in his childhood, was introduced to the various subjects like astronomy, grammar, philosophy and literature which by his graduation in 1841 earned him the title of ‘Vidyasagar’ meaning Ocean of knowledge. His most prominent contribution has been towards the cultural awakening of the Bengal Renaissance by being a supporter of girls’ education, widow remarriages and was against high caste polygamy. He organised various public protests, the famous being the ‘Signature Campaign’ which got him into strife with the religious groups, citing scriptures for their discriminatory treatment. Ishwar countered these allegations by publishing papers on widow marriages by stating that no scripture debars widow remarriages. His constants legal intervention into these discriminatory malpractices led the formulation of the Hindu Widows Remarriage Act 1856. This landmark judgment protected the widows and gave them the right to lead a respectful life. As a scholar and philanthropist, he was a staunch supporter of dissemination of education, even to women to rise above the societal oppressions. He established schools by initiating Nari Shakti Bhandar for its funding. Along with this, he is also credited for standardising and reforming the Bengali alphabets by writing the book Borno Porichoy (Varna Parichay) and has written several books encompassing elements of mythology, humour, satire and irony.
