Many of us have the painful experience of being chronically misunderstood by our family. It’s always beneficial to push, challenge, and reveal ourselves in an attempt to be understood. However, when we do so for years--sometimes even decades--without having much of an impact it can be helpful to take a step back and reevaluate the meaning of this story. Some people will never see us; it’s as if we speak another language. It’s not that they don’t want to understand us, it’s that they literally can’t. They don’t have the capacity. If they were to see us, they would have to face their own shame. Therefore, we are seen through a lens of contempt. We are made to feel powerless, lacking value, and invisible. This is a complex dynamic that unfolds in many families. Some people become the holder of all the family dysfunction, the identified patient, or the scapegoat. These are unconscious systems that can unfold throughout an entire lifetime. Changing this dynamic is difficult because the misinterpretation is a central feature and function of the family. This was me as at 14. I was newly out, majorly depressed and doing drugs. I was labeled the fuckup and blamed for my familys ongoing dysfunction. When I started to get better they refused to pay for my therapy despite having plenty of $ to do so. I was not allowed to have power. Today, I am far from that scared kid - I am accomplished, successful, smart and kind. Yet members of my family continue to see me through a contemptuous lens. I’m not going to tell you that continuing to push and challenge is self-betrayal, self-harm, or a reflection of toxic boundaries. This is too complex of an experience for reductionistic. It’s not a simple adjustment when you want love from the person(s) who make you feel invisible. A part of us may always seek and ache for that love. Sometimes it is necessary to take a step back from relationships that are painful and other times it’s helpful to continue with confrontation. There will always be barriers in relationships. Sometimes it is just as important to learn how to live with them as it is to break them down. - @yourdiagnonsense on Instagram
