Black women, as magical as I know we are—and I know you know we are, I also want to call attention to the weight of the struggle we carry on a daily basis for simply existing in our own skin. Which can be a really lonely feeling when grappling with the reality that genuine allies are few and far in between. And, that not everyone in our community is down for us. For me, it feels like we’re receiving superficial support because there are so many ppl in the 🌎 who say they admire the resilience we’ve cultivated in response to racism, cultural appropriation, sexual fetishization, scientific racism, violence, etc. Yet, when it’s time for the world to show up for black women they never do, not really. For me, showing up first means seeing black women and hearing us without trying to dilute or control our narratives OR our bodies. Then, synthesizing that info into something actionable to break the wheel, like strategizing to secure the arrest/conviction of the officers who killed Breona Taylor or shutting down an intl institution’s decision to force #castersemenya to alter her natural body chemistry to make white athletes feel secure. To me showing up is white people and non-black POC addressing their own relationship with race to unpack their beliefs about black women...but interestingly enough, I’ve found that a number of self-proclaimed “allies” don’t actually want to listen or hear your truth as a black woman because it triggers their own hang ups about race. So where does this leave us? Who can black women turn to? I think about this a lot. Yet it’s when I’m reminded of our shared sentiments of otherness, that I realize what a blessing it is to be alive at the same time witnessing the same things even though it hurts. And that the trauma isn’t what binds us together. It’s our magic which is as ancient and powerful as the ancestors who hold us from within our own beautiful black bodies. So no matter how low or lost I feel, I know that I’ll never truly be alone a moment in this world as long as black women are right here with me. I love you all my queens. I see you. I hear you. ATTENTION STUDENTS!!! SSS is hosting a student competition and you dont want to miss out! Are you an active student in 2019? Good, that means you qualify. If you want to progress in skydiving while having some extra fun, this is the perfect event to do just that! We will be running the competition throughout two days and have three categories to compete in: 1. Accuracy - with or without radio, hone your canopy skills by landing as close to the target as possible. 2. Chair Race - you will have to land as close as possible to a chair in the landing area. As soon as you land, the clock starts ticking and you have to gather up your canopy and sit in the chair in the fastest time. Be careful, dont drag your canopy or youll get docked points. 3. Aaaaaaaarch! Show us what you got. Best arch coming off the strut wins. This is essentially a beauty contest. Prizes might include some free jumps so come on out!!! “When I fly on an airplane it’s really boring,” observed former Zeppelin mechanic Eugen Bentele. Such an outlook on airplane travel is perhaps not surprising given Bentele was a survivor of the decidedly non-boring 1937 Hindenburg disaster. But a Zeppelin mechanic needn’t have crashed to find airplane travel boring. As these photos show, even those who had experienced no crashes at all would likely find airplane travel to be a droll, mundane event. Bentele was a Diesel mechanic during WWII, and had served on two other Zeppelins before the Hindenburg. None of the assignments were boring. One of his coworkers described his first time traversing the catwalk from the Zeppelin to one of the engine gondolas: “I open the hatch that separates the gondola from the ship and a sharp wind blows in. Its sea air, and below me is the blue, endless ocean – nothing but water as far as the eye can see. You really get a sinking feeling the first time you are over the ocean and have to cross that tiny catwalk to the gondola.” As I walk along the short catwalk, the wind grabs hold of me, pressing my cheeks in and inflating my pockets – bad news for anything that isnt tightly fastened. The wind is very cold, and I can tell that the ship is making good speed. Its blowing the water right out of my eyes by the time I make my way across.” Bentele describes a similar experience: “Getting into and out of the [aft] engine car when watches were changed or for repairs meant climbing along a ladder that could be folded up to make a streamlined spar. For protection from the propeller wash when climbing into the car, there was a strut which you could hook your arm over. Mind you, the whole thing was a lot more difficult when you had to clamber along the ladder with an awkward, heavy engine cylinder.” All of this info comes from the fantastic blog: projektlz129.blogspot.com , which is maintained by a writer named Patrick Russell. Additionally, Eugen Bentele himself wrote a book called The story of a Zeppelin mechanic: my flights 1931-1938 in which he describes his experiences working on Diesel Zeppelin engines in flight. I’m happy to see this. I didn’t see the performance at the time of the furore but watched later on catch-up. It was in my opinion brilliant. This has taken a while to post, but I wanted to share a story that ran in the December issue of SKI Magazine. Devon ONeil wrote this story about how skiing has shaped my life and helped me through some traumatic times including the loss of my wife to suicide on Christmas Day 2016. (Story Link in Profile) I wasnt initially going to post this story on social media as it is a hard story for me to read and feels heavy to share, but I remembered that when Devon approached me about doing this story, I hoped that it might help just one person experiencing tough days to seek help and find a way through the darkness and back into the light. For anyone that has thoughts of ending your life please ask for help. The world needs you! While you may feel alone and buried beneath the weight of life, I promise you there are people that love you and will help ease the load if you just ask. 👋🏼 I get asked regularly how Im doing in swinging 2016 trump voters to the other side of the aisle with all this political pie talk. My answer is that I have no clue because thats not the work Im trying to do. Im trying to stop everyone from being exactly who I was in a 2016. A non voter. Yup, thats me. I didnt vote in 2016. I took the most selfish and ignorant course of action. I chose to absorb only what the mainstream media covered which was mostly Trumps antics and those dang emails. I chose to play the I cant just vote for the lesser of two evils game. I did no work to challenge myself or learn anything beyond the biases instilled in me. I chose to care about no one else but myself. Over the past four years Ive watched countless people continuously get disenfranchised by the system I helped create. If you didnt vote in 2016 you are just as complicit in supporting this system. You are just as complicit in not caring about any of the people or things mentioned in the 9 slides on this post. Yes, shame is powerful and Id like you to feel just a little bit of it. Just enough to get you to care about something or someone. If we dont care then people will die. People will lose their rights. The world you live in will continue to literally burn. It’s not ok. If youre questioning your own ability to change or make change, know that its possible and Im proof. Ive made a complete 180 from my stances 4 years ago. Ive found some many things to care about. Im going to vote. You can too. Care about something. Register to vote. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of @gbrlegacy founder and chair, John Rumney. 💔 Whether you had known John for a minute or a lifetime, he had a unique ability to fuel the fires in you that made you want to do great things, for yourself, for others, and of course for our amazing planet that he found so much joy in. 🌎 He was selfless beyond measure and would always put you and your needs well before his own, because if you were in his presence or thoughts, you were the most important person in the world. If John believed in you, then you were unstoppable! John LOVED the natural world. Every little detail was fascinating beyond belief, and he inherently understood the processes that drive the systems we take for granted from local to global. 💨 🌊 🌳 He also understood he was part of those systems and for them to stay as beautiful as when he found them he was going to have to do everything he could to protect them for everyone to enjoy forever. And that he did! John dedicated his life to our Great Barrier Reef. To him, the reef was family, something to be cherished beyond measure, a marvel of nature so rich and abundant in life it had to be seen to be believed. John started, was part of, or chaired countless committees, attended meetings at every level, lobbied our politicians, appeared in and coordinated countless documentaries, and most importantly was a leader and a trusted voice in all reef-related matters. 🐠 🐋 🐙 John was admired and respected in so many circles because of his integrity and honesty, because of his drive and ambition to simply do the right thing, his ability to work with anyone and everyone, and because his wants and desires were never for his own personal gain, but always for others and the world we live in. John was recognised for his endless contributions to the Great Barrier Reef and with both an Australia Day Citizen of the Year award for the @douglasshirecouncil , as well receiving the @australiangeographic Lifetime of Conservation Award and was humbled by these enormous gestures.
