The critically endangered White-bellied Heron, also known as the Imperial Heron, is an extremely rare and large stone-gray heron with a distinctive white belly and long neck. The species’ range extends from the eastern Himalayan foothills in Bhutan and north-eastern parts of India, to Bangladesh and north Myanmar. In India, recorded populations can be found in the north-eastern state of Assam, and in Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh. With a rapidly declining and limited population, the White-bellied Heron is threatened by the widespread loss of its habitat. The species, which is primarily observed in terrestrial and wetland habitats, favours mountain rivers and streams often located close to broadleaved forests and wet grasslands. With the White-bellied Heron’s natural environment undergoing degradation, fragmentation, disturbance, and conversion; the rare species is faced with the grave consequence of increasing human disturbances and shrinking natural habitat and ecosystem to support their populations. - The Peruvian Inca Orchid is an ancient breed of dog native to Peru. Due to its lack of hair, it is warm to the touch and is often used as a living hot-water bottle. Despite being predominately a companion dog, it is also a skilled sighthound.

Friday we received a call about a massive hoarding/breeding case in rural Illinois with more than 300 dogs and cats that urgently needed help. Without hesitation, Abby, Kelly & Samantha jumped in the van and drove 6 hours to be on site first thing Saturday morning. To say the conditions these animals are being kept in vile doesnt even begin to convey how terrible their lives have been. Crammed in crates overflowing with feces and urine, upper respiratory issues so severe that many arent able to open their eyes, these cats(and dogs) have suffered tremendously. Thanks to some amazing local animal shelters, a large portion of the dogs were rescued and all of the kittens were rescued. We are ecstatically proud to say that we were able to take EVERY SINGLE cat in the building - 65 in total. All in all we walked away with every sick, injured, elderly, amazing, wonderful, deserving cat they had. We absolutely need your help caring for these cats. The bare bones minimum that every single cat will need is diagnostic testing, multiple vaccinations, spay/neuter surgeries, and extensive treatment for vicious internal parasites and upper respiratory infections. We have yet to assess dental condition, injuries, tumors, or any underlying medical issues as the conditions were too deplorable to do onsite. I first heard about South Georgia Island while working on a story as a photo editor at National Geographic Traveler magazine. Ever since this elusive Antarctic isle known for its abundant wildlife has been on my travel list. A few weeks ago I finally set foot in Saint Andrews Bay, home to over 200,000 pairs of king penguins. It’s time for fall migration around the Great Lakes! Warblers, hawks, and monarch butterflies are passing through on their way back to warmer habitats. The distance many of them travel never ceases to amaze me! I remember seeing a warbler last year in Peru and wondering if she had ever passed through my backyard over 3,700 miles away. Isn’t nature incredible? It always comes back to connection for me. Despite spanning the greatest distances, we are all so connected! That warbler depends on healthy ecosystems in my backyard and in the lovely forests of Peru that so many wonderful people are working to protect. While I was exploring the area for migrating species I also came across some lovely shorebirds and a juvenile bald eagle that was busy screeching away to a nearby sibling. - @christylfrank on Instagram

STATE SEIZURE UPDATE: On March 11th, the ARLGP acquired temporary custody of 16 animals seized from a home in Dexter by the State of Maine Animal Welfare Department. 9 dogs, 3 rabbits, 2 guinea pigs and 2 birds were transferred to our care until a court hearing would determine their future. • It is difficult – and heartbreaking -- to describe the state these animals were in. For many of our team members, these were some of the worst conditions we had seen pets arrive in. Each of them required urgent, emergency care the moment they came through our doors. We worked quickly and diligently in teams assessing each animal and treating their physical wounds and infections. We worked long into the night to ensure each animal was as comfortable as we could make them. Sadly, one guinea pig’s prognosis was grave, and he was humanely euthanized. • Because of COVID-19 and the delays it has caused the Maine court system, we have been caring for these animals for the past 167 days. Yesterday afternoon we were awarded permanent custody of all 15 animals and can finally begin the process of readying them for adoption. • Their veterinary needs are extensive. We have performed several biopsies and mass removals to diagnose advanced conditions. We have a dog in need of entropion eye surgery due to trauma. We are treating mange and severe skin conditions. Some have extreme separation anxiety that will require ongoing behavioral support. “Faces of The World: Isla Lobos, Galapagos, ECUADOR” - The Day trip that we took with @darwinscubadivedive to Isla Lobos was one of the best during our stay at San Cristobal. • The small islet located approximate 40 minutes from the main port of San Cristobal is home to the various unique Galapagos birds. Sea lions swam around the islet playfully and iguanas roamed and nested on the grounds. Pick one and tell me why. If you ask me why I would go back to Cuba, it would be to see and photographed this beauty . The Bee Hummingbird (Mellisuga helenae) comes in as the smallest hummingbird in the world at 5 – 6.1 cm. This is definitely one of the most unique hummingbirds Ive even see so far. This one is endemic to Cuba. We literally had some excellent opportunities to photograph this bird from about 3 to 5 feet away from us. I felt like I did not took enough shots of this bird. Rescued a few weeks ago from East Island in Glen Cove, this Canada Goose is currently receiving treatment for fishing line entanglement injuries and a fracture to his lower mandible. He had a large mass of fishing line along with a sinker and hook entangled around his wing and leg which caused decreased circulation and swelling and rendered him unable to stand. We are hopeful he will continue on the path to recovery and will be able to return home to his flock later this month! Parque Nacional Torres del Paine Región de Magallane, 2018 Durante nuestra expedición a Torres del Paine, recorremos muchos rincones del parque en busca no solo de pumas, si no también de la fauna que habita en los diferentes sectores. Una de mis aves favoritas, por su elegancia y color es el flamenco. He tenido la suerte de poder fotografiar las diferentes especies que se ven en el norte y sur y esta es una de mis favoritas. De plumaje de color rosado y blanco, pico negro grande y encorvado hacia abajo, en conjunto con las patas rojas, siempre llamaron mi atención y son además formas mediante las cuales podemos diferenciarlos de las otras especies. El flamenco chileno se alimenta de pequeños invertebrados y vegetales acuáticos en zonas poco profundas, por lo que es frecuente encontrarlos en las orillas de laguna Amarga. Fue allí donde los fotografié, mientras se movían de lugar. Zwarte Ooievaar - Black Stork - Ciconia nigra • • 📸: @np_photographic • Nick: Op 18 juli besloten we na een dagje vlinders kijken in zuid Limburg, terug te rijden via Nationaal Park De Groote Peel om daar nog een rondje te wandelen voor voornamelijk vlinders. Na het rondje kozen we voor het terras bij het bezoekerscentrum om de dag af te sluiten met een koud drankje en wat bitterballen. Op een gegeven moment viel mijn oog op een grote vogel, wat een Zwarte Ooievaar bleek! Helaas was ik niet snel genoeg met het wisselen van lens, maar gelukkig kwamen er nog geen vijf minuten later uit dezelfde richting nóg twee Zwarte Ooien aangevlogen! Deze kozen ervoor om recht boven onze hoofden de thermiek op te zoeken! Heel gaaf om ze in de hoogte te zien verdwijnen, helemaal met een lekkere bitterbal in de hand! When I was photographing a moose in the distance (beautiful cow) this raven caught my attention in the meadow. I photographed him approaching - he was quite the character- but then he flew away. I focused back on the cow. Then, I suddenly felt something close by. I could see from the corner of my eye it was the raven. He was only a few feet away, squawked, and then starting preening himself. He stayed for a while. I had my Nikon Z7 with 500mm and 2x extender on (for the moose in the distance of course) but fired away regardless of having so much lens. This is full frame and I love the outcome. A definite highlight to the day in Algonquin Park, Ontario. BREAKING NEWS : ANIMALS SURRENDERED – On Thursday, Animal Rescue Corps (ARC), a nonprofit animal protection organization, assisted the Henry County Sheriffs Department with the removal of 622 animals living in horrendous conditions on a property in Buchanan, TN; where a toddler was also found living in a cage. In the room where the child was found, there were also large snakes, some of which were ten feet long; as well as mice, rats, and other small animals. The property owner and two others living in the trailer were arrested and taken to the Henry County Jail. They have been charged with aggravated child abuse, aggravated cruelty to animals, cruelty to animals, manufacturing of marijuana, as well as other charges related to weapons found on the property. Additional charges are pending, and all three individuals are being held with a $300,000 bond each. Según la lista roja de la IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature), el estado de conservación del jote de cabeza colorada se encuentra clasificado como una especie de menor riesgo, lo que quiere decir que su población se ha mantenido estable a través del tiempo. A pesar de esto, esta rapaz es considerada una amenaza para algunas personas que viven de la ganadería, ya que se dice que se alimenta de animales recién nacidos y que difunden enfermedades como la peste porcina o el carbuncos. Sin embargo, es todo lo contrario, pues su tracto digestivo tiene ácidos que destruyen estos virus. Lo cierto es que el rol ecológico que esta rapaz cumple dentro de la cadena es tan importante como el resto de las rapaces, ya que es considerado un purificador, esto es debido a su conducta alimenticia basada en consumir animales en descomposición. El jote de cabeza colorada está protegido por diferentes leyes y tratados internacionales alrededor de América, tales como el Tratado de Aves Migratorias de Estados Unidos, país en el cual se puede cobrar una multa de hasta 15.000 USD y cumplir sentencia en prisión de hasta seis meses; la Convención para la protección de Aves Migratorias en Canadá y México, la Convención de Especies Migratorias de Animales Silvestres que ha sido ratificada en 115 países, entre los cuales se incluye Chile. Rehabilitación. - Lasiurus varius. - Se tiende a creer que los murciélagos que están en el piso de día o que entran a las casas de día son murciélagos con rabia o alguna enfermedad, personalmente creo que esto no puede estar más alejado de la realidad, tomando en cuenta que han sido animales sumamente estigmatizados por la cultura popular, y por si fuera poco el ISP en la mayoría de casos los trata directamente como solo una cosa que podría ser una posible enfermedad y no como animal ( quiero aclarar que un gato o un perro pueden ser posibles zoonosis tambien ). - Hay muchas razones por las cuales un murciélago puede estar en el piso, o la primera es que puede ser joven e inexperto, como es el caso de este L.varius, los juveniles no siempre se adaptan bien al cambio de dieta y con ello la separación de la madre, al ser inexpertos no suelen tener éxito durante varios intentos de captura, terminando debilitados. - Puede ser que un murciélago no haya alcanzado a llegar a su refugio por qué lo pillo el ocaso, y debido a esto se ve obligado a refugiarse en otros lados como una casa cercana. - O puede ser que simplemente lo hayan echado de la colonia por una riña o alguna cosa X ( en especies gregarias). - @yeco.saurio on Instagram

Hello there! This is the Black #Stork, although many of you may also know me as Ciconia nigra. Together with the White Stork, we are the 2 only stork species to be found in the #Mediterranean (#Spain #Portugal, #Albania and #Greece). You will easily recognise me by my black and white (underside) plumage, together with a red bill and legs. True fact: my wingspan can measure up to 1.90 m. My preferred habitat types are undisturbed riversides, wetlands and woodlands. As a migratory species, I travel throughout the Mediterranean and to Sub-Saharan Africa searching for the most suitable climate conditions. My biggest fear when migrating is to encounter #powerlines or wind farms, where I can be in danger of electrocution or collision. To prevent these interactions, IUCN-Med has recently published a set of practical guidelines. Also within IUCN, The Stork, Ibis and Spoonbill Specialist Group of the Species Survival Commission is committed to the scientific understanding and conservation of our bird families and habitats. Thanks to successful conservation programmes, in countries like Spain, populations of my species have slowly increased until almost 400 breeding pairs (49% in Extremadura and 26,55% in Andalusia) according to @seo_birdlife s 2018 census. Gregario, se alimenta de carroña y en ocasiones también de animales moribundos, los cuales encuentra volando en círculos y utilizando su visión, a diferencia del jote de cabeza colorada, que emplea el sentido olfato. Posee un vuelo característico, en el que intercala planeos con las alas horizontales y seis o siete aleteos fuertes. El jote de cabeza negra se distribuye desde el extremo norte del país hasta Aysén. Generalmente se le ve volando en pareja o en grupos dispersos, y es común que se encuentren acompañados de tiuques y caranchos a la hora de alimentarse, quienes aprovechan la comida y la protección de las bandadas de jotes. Debemos proteger a esta grandiosa ave rapaz, que limpia nuestro planeta de cuerpos de animales en descomposición, pues sin ella podrían acumularse y propagar enfermedades, lo que habla de la importancia de su rol ecológico. (Testimonio de autor) El loro tricahue es una especie amenazada y en peligro de extinción, principalmente por la acción del hombre. Duerme en sectores rodeados de cactus para evitar a sus depredadores naturales (halcones, águilas, aguiluchos y peucos). Forma grandes y bulliciosas colonias preferentemente en zonas de barrancos rocosos. Allí construye profundas cuevas en las que anida y utiliza como dormitorio. Quise registrar en la fotografía a un pequeño grupo de loros posados en los cactus, ya que generalmente los veíamos pasar volando frente al acantilado. La foto destaca la belleza de sus colores verde oliva oscuro en su cabeza y lomo, en contraste con el cielo azul de fondo. Es un ave endémica de singular belleza que debemos proteger. ¿Cómo? • No ingresando a áreas de nidificación. • No molestar a los loros en bebederos, zonas de descanso y dormideros. • No acercarse a loreras. • No usar al Loro Tricahue como mascota. Está pasando 🆘‼️Impactantes imágenes de las consecuencias de los incendios en Pantanal, Brasil. Los jaguares de las fotos se encuentran entre los miles de animales que huyen de los incendios forestales mortales que arrasan con el humedal más grande del mundo, ubicado en Pantanal, Mato grosso, Brasil. Las cifras son fuertes, más de 15.756 incendios, el triple que el año pasado, han causado 2,9 millones de hectáreas de devastación en su hábitat, que es uno de los puntos críticos con mayor biodiversidad del mundo. Aunque algunos incendios ocurren naturalmente durante la estación seca, el ministro de Medio Ambiente de Brazil, Ricardo Salles, dice que los incendios de este año se han extendido a proporciones gigantescas, con un estado de emergencia declarado en la región. I have been asked, which animal or bird is your favorite? My answer is always the same. They are all my favorites, but if I had to choose, Meerkats would be high on the list. They are members of the mongoose family. They live in Southern Africa in countries such as South Africa, Botswana and Zimbabwe. They live in dry open plains, savannas and grasslands. I studied them for two days in the Kalahari. We would get up early, eat breakfast and then go to where one group lived. We then positioned ourselves. Guess what a group of Meerkats are called? A mob. They have the mob mentality. Meerkats have no fear of humans. They will climb on you and go right up to you. When the sun rises, the first meerkat appears. He or she looks for predators such as jackals and large birds. Meerkats have great vision. They can see long distances. Eventually the whole mob appeared. One adult is assigned as the babysitter. While the others forage, the babysitter stays at the burrows with the infants If the babysitter senses a predator, he or she will take the infants and go back into the burrow. The babysitter rotates amongst the family and is chosen by the dominant females. Meerkats have ten different vocalizations and can tell the difference in each other’s voices. Females tend to be more vocal than males. All members help and look after each other. A mob is made up of two or three families of breeding pair and their offspring. Males initiate mating by picking a fight with the female and then make up. Meerkats will live between seven and ten years.
