Launch of Athens Music Walk of Fame Athens is a community known worldwide for its creative and diverse music scene, with a rich musical heritage dating from the nineteenth century. To recognize the contributions of the artists who have helped make Athens a destination for music fans, the Athens Cultural Affairs Commission (ACAC) announces the launch of the Athens Music Walk of Fame and its first 10 inductees. The Athens Music Walk of Fame is a two-square-block area in downtown Athens bounded by Pulaski Street, East Washington Street, North Lumpkin Street, and Clayton Street. The walk passes several renowned music venues in western downtown, including the Morton Theatre, the 40 Watt Club, and the Georgia Theatre. “The Athens Music Walk of Fame will enhance the visual and experiential appeal of downtown Athens, helping to foster community pride and a better awareness of our shared musical and cultural legacy for both locals and visitors,” said ACAC Chair Andrew Salinas. The first 10 inductees for the Athens Music Walk of Fame show that Athens’ musical heritage far predates the alternative music scene that put Athens on the international map. While several of the artists who shaped Athens’ “indie” reputation appear among these initial inductees – including Pylon, R.E.M., and the B-52s – there are a number of figures who demonstrate the depth and breadth of Athens’ musical pedigree. The first 10 inductees for the Athens Music Walk of Fame are: • The B-52s • Danger Mouse (Brian Joseph Burton) • Drive-By Truckers • The Elephant 6 Recording Company • Hall Johnson • Neal Pattman • Pylon • R.E.M. • Vic Chesnutt • Widespread Panic The first ten inductees were selected by a local resident committee appointed by Athens-Clarke County Mayor Kelly Girtz. During the selection process, committee members considered the contribution to the identity of Athens, established career, diverse representation in cultural and racial identity, distinct musical style, and historical context. Лайфхаки для тех, кто планирует путешествие и фотосессию в Рускеальском экспрессе. 🚂 ⠀ Начну с того, что сейчас это единственный в России действующий ежедневный поезд на паровом ходу. Он курсирует каждый день из Сортавала с 10:40 до Горного парка Рускеала, обратно в Сортавала он отправляется в 17.30. Время в пути где-то 1 час 10 минут. Весь период с 11.50 до 17.30 он стоит в Рускеала, поэтому не обязательно спешить фотографироваться у поезда сразу, когда его оккупирует толпа, можно сделать это позже.🙌🏻 ⠀ ✨ Если вы покупаете билеты заранее, то у вас есть шанс взять вип-купе на 5 человек за 5000 рублей. Здесь вас будут ждать закуски, игристое и масса реквизита для съемки. 💫Плюс в том, что никто чужой не будет сидеть рядом и вы можете фотографироваться от души, наслаждаться видами, общением и ретро-обстановкой. 💫 Минус — это дороговато, так как билет в обычное купе, которое выглядит точно так же, стоит 299-399 рублей и сделать фото без людей можно во время остановки.👌🏻 ⠀ ✨ Если вы хотите попасть в отдельную фотозону в поезде, то её можно забронировать в любом вагоне на специальном экране (спросите у проводника), но желательно это сделать сразу как войдёте, так как места выкупаются в первые 15-30 минут, стоит это около 300 рублей. ⠀ ✨ Несмотря на то, что вы покупаете билет и получаете место в купе, можно в нем не ехать, а сразу перебраться в вагон-ресторан, там посадка по факту и цены на еду очень адекватные. Важный лайфхак, так как брони нет, все места в ресторане занимаются в первые 10-15 минут, поэтому советую идти прямо туда после посадки. ⠀ ✨ Кстати, ресторанов два. Один оформлен с кабинетном стиле, как все купе. / CLASSIC RESTOS / Fletch travels to Orange in NSW to discover Deans country-style shed. Initially built to get their cars undercover and out of the frost. The shed now includes a vast collection of bits and pieces, collected over the past ten years. Vehicles include a VW Kombi that was his fathers, which they worked on to get it back on the road and in running order. A 1954 FJ Holden Ute, acquired from a local Holden dealer who was clearing out his shed. There is also 1973 HQ Wagon in very good condition and is the families daily drive. And a 1934 Royal Enfield that will be restored over time. RIP to the Santa Fe Hotel. The two-story solid brick building that stands today at 235 Lake Street is not the original Santa Fe Hotel, although it is located on the same site. The building housing the first Santa Fe was constructed there in 1913 for a man named A.J. Clark, and its second floor served as a hotel under various names including the Colombo Hotel before becoming the Santa Fe Hotel in the mid-1920s. Lake Street at the time was filled with small hotels, which all enjoyed close proximity to Reno’s train depot, one block north on Commercial Row. Basque immigrant Jean Pierre Etcheberry, already successful in the sheep business, took over the hotel lease in 1931. Etcheberry had arrived in the United States in 1910 and, along with his wife Marie, owned and operated the hotel until his death in 1943, when Marie took on Martin Esain as a partner. Under their management, the Santa Fe promised Basque immigrants traveling to the new country a friendly place to meet, a familiar language, a cozy bed, and a hearty traditional dinner. A terrible fire swept along Lake Street on August 15, 1948, damaging many buildings including the Santa Fe. Five people were killed in the fire, including three firefighters, one of whom was Frank Hobson, chief of the Sparks fire department. The old Santa Fe Hotel was condemned by the city and Esain, by now the sole owner, constructed a new hotel building in 1949, with commercial and restaurant spaces on the ground floor, including a barber shop, and 22 rooms above. Esain’s nephew, Joseph Zubillaga, and Zubillaga’s sisters Aurelie and Anita, helped their uncle run the Santa Fe over the next decades, taking over its operation when Esain died in 1966. The new Santa Fe Hotel continued to serve the community, including many local sheepherders and Basques, until the 1960s, when the immigration of Basque people sharply declined. Bill Harrah and Harrah’s Casino attempted to acquire the hotel and the land many times but the owners of the Santa Fe were not interested. All the other businesses near the Santa Fe did sell to Harrah, however, so Harrah’s Casino was simply built around them. My great-grandparents purchased the blue stove in 1926. They had a small farm upstate and it’s my great- grandmother’s pie crust recipe that we still use for our classic crust here. Mumbo, we called her, is pictured here on the farm. I’m the baby-blob in her arms and my sister is to her side. I remember hearing stories about people walking up from NYC during the Great Depression looking for food and work. They had a small farm but helped out as best they could. I’m thinking about what history this stove has stood through in almost 100 years, and what we are weathering right now. Driving the truck was scary last year, this year, I’m more relaxed and comfortable driving this old lady! 😂 There have been many farming failures, but much success too!
