An American hero, Judge Vince Okamoto of Torrance passed away. Born during World War II when his Japanese immigrant parents were incarcerated at the Poston, Arizona internment camp, Okamoto served as an Army Ranger during the Vietnam War, receiving the Distinguished Service Cross, the second highest military decoration, the Purple Heart with three oak leaf clusters, the Silver Star, and the Bronze Star. His story was featured in Ken Burns’s PBS documentary, “The Vietnam War.” A graduate of Gardena High School, El Camino College, and USC before his military service, Okamoto practiced law in Torrance for many years before he was appointed to the Los Angeles Superior Court. I will always remember the first time I met Okamoto. He took me out to lunch at the Szechuan Restaurant on PCH in Lomita many years ago when I was a young lawyer and he was a Torrance lawyer. He never met me before, but he spent two hours giving me career advice and buying me lunch. I wish I could have seen him again, to thank him for being a hero for me and for so many others.
