Two types of wildlife. I grew up in NY in the ‘80s. The J train ran past my bedroom window that looked over Jamaica Avenue (between Cypress Hills and Elderts stops) it was completely covered with spray painted tags and big car-long mural style pieces. Seeing the trains go past my window and riding them clutching my mom’s hand was a huge influence on me-the colors, forms, imagination but it also represented a fight against the system, lawlessness and havoc...no one was ambivalent about graffiti-you were either in or out. For the last 20 years I’ve lived in rural Australia far away from vandalism (not gonna discuss environmental vandalism right now). I live with animals all around me-snakes slithering in my roof, frogs in the toilet and birds knocking on my door. Last night was warm and balmy I went outside to see if I could spot any critters and found this beautiful carpet python curled up amongst these paint cans around the side of my house. Seeing these two contrasting elements together made me think of where I’ve been and where I am now and how I’ve lived two very different wild lives. Of course, the evening that I dont bring my Nikon with me I see the largest eastern diamondback rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus) Ive ever seen at Conservation Park. Estimated to be about 6 ft, I almost stepped on this gorgeous snake when I walked in the grass to avoid a mini lake in the trail and CLEARLY wasnt paying attention to this dude chilling in the grass, very well camouflaged🤦. We were able to find this huge enclosure for our 9 ft female King Cobra to climb around in. Being highly venomous, we had to make sure it was extra secure. She can only spend a short time with our large 13 ft male King Cobra, during breeding season. King Cobras eat other snakes and sometimes the males will eat the smaller females. Yikes! A friendly reminder and warning for those of you with kids and dogs - It is September and the start of football season, but it is also the time of year when copperheads are born. The baby snakes are born with venom and ready to defend themselves. The mama snake generally gives birth to about 8 - 10 of these critters, so if you find one there are others around. The babies will keep those greenish/yellow tips on their tails for about a year. These snakes are not generally aggressive but will bite if you are unfortunate enough to touch or step on one. FWC biologist Pierson Hill recently documented an extremely unusual “patternless” eastern diamondback rattlesnake in north Florida, which he then microchipped and released safely for identification by researchers in the future. This color morph is exceptionally rare – only a small handful of patternless diamondbacks have been documented by biologists. The photos show this patternless diamondback, with a normal eastern diamondback for comparison. Pierson says it is very likely that this patternless trait is heritable given that it has popped up several times in this population and it’s likely that both parents need to contribute one or more recessive (“hidden”) gene copies to create patternless offspring. While eastern diamondbacks are venomous and should be treated with caution, they are one of only 6 venomous species of snakes in the state. Native snakes like this one are beneficial to the ecosystem: eastern diamondbacks have an important role in controlling rodent populations, consuming several species of mice, rats, squirrels, and even rabbits. They have been documented eating prey weighing as much as 85% the snake’s body weight! I remember this Nerodia!🐍What can he tell us about urban wildlife? 🤔 . Ive been going through old pictures for a paper Im finishing up and this Banded water snake (Nerodia fasciata) brought me right back to the surveys! . In fact, he actually was the last individual found during a 6 month span of surveys at the Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary near downtown Houston. . This little 17 acre plot of land is surrounded by highways, housing, and mimosa laden brunch spots. . But damn does it have an impressive amount of herps! 🐍🐸🐢🦎 . Combing information from surveys and iNaturalist, we concluded that a total of 24 species of herpetofauna could be found on the property . From Narrow-Mouth Toads to Nerodia, this little urban sanctuary serves as an enclave for wildlife in the middle of a bustling city. . So why dont other parks have this amount of wildlife? 🤔 . Well a big reason is that the park was left as natural as possible. Dirt trails criss cross through a forest of native plants. . A team of community volunteers are constantly on the property caring for and keeping it a sanctuary for wildlife. . On top of that, staff members who were awesome and passionate for nature filled the site. . Honestly, that little park serves as a fantastic model for how nature can still exist in the middle of a city . And think about who that affects. . Sure, the wildlife have a safe place to call home, but also the nearby human residents gain so much. . Kids who grew up in a concrete jungle now have immediate access to Nature and wildlife. . A community is built around the park, but also within it. Volunteers care for trails, plants, and animals during their free time. . Edith L Moore serves a fantastic role in the age where we become more disconnected from nature. Where its easier to not see a wild animal for weeks on end. Exciting find last night! We got some summer thunderstorms in the mountains near Los Angeles so we decided to go see if anything was moving. The area we went to was still bone dry and we couldn’t reach the rain areas bc of wildfires. While driving, I thought I saw a gopher snake (very common here) but it turned out to be a lyre snake!! These are much less commonly seen! My first time to see them in this area, we got 2 of them, and my biggest one yet!! Check out the iridescent scales on its head. These cool rear-fanged snakes are usually harmless to humans, and I’ve been bitten with no effect. But after seeing a friend @dingo_dinkelman nearly die from an allergic reaction to a practically harmless snake, I don’t let them chew on me. I don’t want to end up allergic as well. Kali and Krait Skin: I joined @ajaykartik88 and Kali on fields of Jabalpur to search for snakes. He was tracing snakes in his TM cryptic manner and Ajay was explaining us what and why he is doing. We were standing on a unused agricultural land, Kali was trying to find clues and I casually told that I cant see anything from my side. Kali was standing 10-12ft from me and saw towards my feet and said something in Tamil. At the same time he came closer and picked a piece of moulted skin and within 2-3 seconds he told it is Krait and handed over that piece to me. I had to sit to observe trace of skin, after seeing carefully I found it was a very old decaying skin which faced rains and sun so got fossilized or pasted. I had two shocks, first, how he spotted that namesake skin from that distance when I couldnt. Second, how he instantly recognised species with bunch of 9-10 scales in which Kraits TM hexagonal scale was absent. Without this scale we never conclude some skin to be Kraits. I carefully peeled more skin and checked he was so right, it was Krait only. His observation of decaying skin laying from good distance and instant correct ID left me in shock and incredible surprise. Wheneger there is talk about Irulas, I cant stop myself from bringing this incident in discussion. When Rom confessed in number of documentaries that he still dont know how Irulas do this, thats true friends. That day I stopped trying to learn, I started just observing and following because I found learning a few things is beyond my human capabilities. P.S. Photo of this post has nothing to do with that incident, it is just for depiction purpose. A new species of Wolfsnake of the genus Lycodon was discovered from South India. (Lycodon deccanensis sp.nov) Based on the taxonomic investigations of the unidentified Lycodon sp from Ganesh et al. 2018, a group of scientists lead by S.R.Ganesh him self,were able to correctly identify the taxon after 125 years. The new snake closely resembles Travancore Wolfsnake (Lycodon travencoricus) and was previously wrongfully identified as a one. Earliest known records dates back to 1891 where Sclater collected specimens from South Arcot, Tamil Nadu but misidentified as L.travancoricus. The new snake is currently known from the Deccan Plateau hence the name Lycodon deccanensis was given. The new snake also shows ontogenic color shift as L.travancoricus. it can be distinguished from the later by the combination of the following characters. subcaudals often undivided; loreal in contact with internasal; nasal not in contact with prefrontal; anterior genials subequal to posterior pair; supraocular usually contacting prefrontal; preocular usually not contacting frontal. With the description of Lycodon deccanensis, the authors have restricted the range of L.travancoricus to Western Ghats and Southern Eastern Ghats by identifying the previous specimens from outside the Western Ghats as Lycodon anamallensis and Lycodon aulicus. A revised key to the genus Lycodon from South India is also presented We, Sri Lankan Herpetology team, congratulate authors S.R.Ganesh, Kaushik Deuti, K.G. Punith, N.S. Esta mañana -muy cerca del mirador #Pajonal y las oficinas nuestros guardaparques- apareció una culebra de cola larga. Algo que no es habitual (porque no es fácil de observar) y que nos alegró muchísimo. Uno de nuestros guardaparques la tomó sin mayores problemas y muy suavemente, para observarla, evaluar sus condiciones y registrar su bella visita. Se trataba de una Phylodrias chamissonis adulta -la mayor de las culebras chilenas- en un muy buen estado y con casi 1.2 metros de largo. King cobra (Ophiophagus hannah) Place: Kammardi, Thirthhalli, Udupi, KA. Date:15/09/2020. The prey & the predator - The family called us in for not one but two snakes. We rescued just one. Here is an interesting incident. Morning, The pet dog was barking restlessly, owner comes out to find, the spectacled cobra trying to escape from the dog. It moves swiftly and takes hide in the firewood shed. Later the king cobra arrives in the same track as the spectacled cobra and enters the firewood shed. We were called in immediately. Over the call we gave precautions to the family and asked them not to disturb the snakes. As we reached the location we realised that the king cobra had already grabbed the prey & was waiting for the cobra to lose its conscious before he starts to swallow. While we waited observing the developments, it was a great opportunity to create awareness about king cobra ecology, dos & donts in case of a snake bite & importance of snakes in their livelihoods also their food chain. The king finished his meal in the evening. Based on the circumstances we decided to bag the snake as there was close proximity to the house, movement of pet dogs & children. Very gentle handling is required in such scenarios so the snake doesn’t regurgitate its meal. It was a successful rescue not only in terms to conflict mitigation but also creating awareness, we enjoyed very good trust & support from the community. - Idosa de 84 anos encontra cobra exótica pendurada na porta de casa, no DF - Uma idosa de 84 anos encontrou uma cobra, da espécie corn snake, pendurada na porta de casa, em Ceilândia, no Distrito Federal. Ela pediu ajuda aos vizinhos, na manhã deste sábado (26), que ligaram para Polícia Militar. A serpente é de origem norte-americana, conhecida como cobra-do-milho, e não é venenosa. Após a captura, o animal foi levado ao Centro de Triagem de Animais Silvestres (Cetas), do Instituto Brasileiro de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Renováveis (Ibama), para os cuidados necessários. O resgate foi por volta de 11h, na QNP 10, no setor P. Sul. Os moradores, que preferiram não se identificar, disseram à PM que não sabem como o animal entrou na casa e suspeitam que a cobra seja de origem ilegal. A Polícia Civil informou ao G1 que o caso não havia sido registrado na delegacia, até a publicação desta reportagem. Portanto, não há investigação em curso. De acordo com a PM, 400 cobras foram resgatadas no DF, em 2020. Só em setembro, foram 20 serpentes capturadas. We were informed by locals and requested to remove the snake from the net and release it safely, so we also informed incharge forest department officials about the incident. After giving an instructions to locals about dos and donts we rushed to the location. We request spectators to keep safe distance from the snake as well as from each other. We gently untangled the snake from the net with the use of restraining tube and scissor and then bagged the snake. Later the snake was released in to the wild just after conducting an onsite awareness program for local community. Heartily thanks to locals to show the concern for the snake. Note: Please spread the word. If fish nets are being used for fence then there should be at least one foot gap from ground level. Also, waste fish net/iron mess/empty bottles must be stored in gunny sacks, tied and kept away from the ground. @ Covid-19: This is the time for all of us to understand the seriousness of the issue. Date: 07-08-2020 Our team members rescued a Python from the residence of Vobesh Ray in Lataguri. While rescuing, we noticed that an Aluminum bangle was stuck on its mid-body and also caused wounds near throat area. We had to cut off the bangle from its body to treta the injuries.
