I didn’t NEED a beautiful, dreamy studio space to create but I always dreamed of one because gosh, it’s pretty and dreamy. After a walking tour of Highbury’s newsagents, I finally got my hands on a copy of today’s @thetimesmagazine featuring the glorious human being who is my mother (and me). As some of you know, I work as head chef at Fratelli Paradiso in Potts Point. I have been working there for 7 years and 4 months. I decided to terminate one of the best Italian restaurants in Sydney. It was the most wonderful experience of my career. Fratelli paradiso opened its doors in 2001 Enrico, Giovanni and Marco. they are still successfully run their business after 19years. A lot of staff have been coming and going in the past, but how do you run a business for 19 years? Fratelli Paradiso is the only one. Due to ideology, spirit of hospitality, and atmosphere, no one can copy it that way. Its all about Familia. Between staff and customers, staff and owners, owners and customers. No one can break this strong triangle. COVID-19 helped me decide to stand up and move on to my next adventure. I will miss Fratelli Paradiso for sure but I have to make situation Fratelli Paradiso will missed me. creates the best food, the best customer service, and creates a family relationship with customers like Fratelli Paradiso does. At the end of this month, I will finish the shift with Fratelli Paradiso. For the next two weeks, I will not be able to make pasta for my “Pasta E Basta” customers, as I will concentrate on my last run on the Fratelli Paradiso. I cant explain how grateful I am for this restaurant. What I can do is to cook with love for Fratelli’s customers, have a special menu, and cook the best family meals for the staff. #jobssavelives Ive always been a positive supporter of the seemingly draconian measures imposed on us by the government because I firmly believed that while we would all suffer (perhaps not equally) it was for a greater good. I was also proud that, as all the madness that was going on around the world, we had a leader who showed stature & empathy - cometh the hour, cometh the man. But, this week I find that resolve quickly evaporating. How do I support a government that has clearly turned its back on the hospitality & tourism industry, it has continued to shun sound & well researched input from professional bodies such as the SA Tourism Board, FEDHASA & The SA Restaurant Association. While at the same time has capitulated to the Taxi Industry. Perhaps its because collectively we just dont have the muscle - we wont blockade highways, we wont burn down restaurants nor will we indiscriminately shoot people on their way to & from work. We pose no real immediate threat, because the government clearly doesnt see the imminent collapse of our industry as their problem. That or they have simply lost control of the situation . People from inside & out of the industry, have suggested all manner of protest, but nothing we could do would hold the government to ransom like the Taxi Industry. Again its because our protest holds no real threat. What if all the many hospitality staff whom are currently, selflessly volunteering to provide meals for those less fortunate decided to down soup ladles in protest? By my rough calculation, in Cape Town alone, that would be in excess of 300 000 meals per week. You multiply that by the various programs operated around the country, by like minded individuals , for ZERO PROFIT, I might add (unlike the taxi industry) and youre probably looking at close to a million souls being fed weekly, by people who have been abandoned by the same government who have seemingly abandoned those they are feeding. But that protest is never going to happen, because were not prepared to sacrifice the lives of others in order to be heard, unlike the Taxi Industry. I was out for a run in March and saw this discarded chair on the side of the road. The base was broken and I wheeled it up the steep hill to my home (the scavenger I am). Turns out it’s a Herman Miller Eames Time Life Executive Chair from 1971 (look it up...). I called Herman Miller in Grand Rapids and ordered a replacement base and cleaned it up. I never imagined I would be producing television remotely, but this chair makes it a bit more tolerable. •CCA Artist-in-Residence Program - Stefan Rinck• We are very excited to introduce you to our resident artist Stefan Rinck, who will stay in Studio Azul through September. It is the second time Stefan stays at our studios and we look forward to seeing the new Mallorca sandstone sculptures he’s already working in. Rinck’s sculptures are reminiscent of figures from a mediaeval bestiary or of the gargoyles on cathedral roofs and towers that served to chase away evil spirits and demons. Digital Shapers 2020 For the fifth time, BILANZ in cooperation with Handelszeitung and Le Temps has selected the 100 most important people in Switzerland who are driving digitization in the country. Thierry Amsallem (56) was already digital when many did not yet know what the abbreviation www stands for. In 1993, to the amusement of many, he was one of the first music organizers to sell tickets for the Montreux Jazz Festival on the Internet. A total of 150 were. In the meantime, nobody is laughing anymore. Today, Claude Nobs, who died in 2013 after a fall while cross-country skiing, has a longtime partner who conducts one of the most exciting and spectacular digital memory projects in the cultural sector. The aim is to digitally secure the worlds most important memory of jazz, blues and rock and to preserve it for posterity. 5,000 live recordings with 20,000 artists, including such titans of music history as David Bowie, Johnny Cash, Tracy Chapman, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, Herbie Hancock and Neil Young. Data amounting to 15 million gigabytes - the equivalent of the storage capacity of more than 20 million CDs - has come together since Claude Nobs, accountant at the Montreux Tourist Office, set up his first Montreux Jazz in 1967 with friends and a budget of just 10000 francs. Recording technology has changed fifteen times in all that time, but in the meantime everything has been digitalized, paving the way for the conservation of this unique musical treasure, says Thierry Amsallem. Now the digital pioneer avant la lettre is looking for a way to preserve this unparalleled audio-visual heritage for future generations - as a repository for musicologists, acousticians, data specialists, museologists and neuroscientists. For those unfamiliar, Salvo Foti is a winemaker native to Sicily’s imposing, active volcano, Etna. He has devoted much of his career in restoring gobelet-trained vineyards on the basalt slopes of Etna, and in re-building true typical Palmenti like those used by his ancestors. We knew takeout would not even come close enough to sustain anything. We tried to stay optimistic as best we could. Holding on for one or two months is such a different mindset than what we know now to be 6+ months...We reopened mid-May for takeout. It was a different world then, not being able to serve people or not being allowed to catch up with people on the sidewalk. Getting used to wearing masks had its learning curve for both staff and customers. The weather started to get warmer and it was wonderful to see familiar faces but sadly many neighbors and customers have left town or are still out of town. As we get closer to fall it does feel like there is a return. I’m getting more messages, emails and calls that people are coming back so hopefully that is happening across the city. Secret, socially distanced and fully masked party at Bar Basso in Milan last night by @studiovedet to celebrate an online exhibition of photos of owner @mastockett and his staff at the bar that has been the key gathering place for the design world for over 20 years. Maurizio brought out his tattered copy of icon magazine from 2004, in which I wrote the first ever story about the phenomenon of the hundreds of design folk descending on the bar during Salone del Mobile (if you look carefully you’ll see photos of the two of us looking very youthful alongside others including @chauhanstudio @maxfraserdesign @ronaradstudio @stephenburksmanmade @marcnewsonofficial @marcelwanders). The fair didn’t happen this year due to Covid-19 but it was great to see the city back on its feet after the trauma of the pandemic and this week’s Milano Design City event has been great to visit without the crowds and hustle of April. 20 years ago I opened a salon, it was called SPIN. In my 30 year career it was by far the hardest thing I have ever done. I have never worked more hours for less pay or had to deal with more challenges day in and day out. But a salon is like a child and you deal with it because you love it. My career has taken me in a different direction from those days, a direction that didn’t even exist then, and I have had success that I never imagined. 04.08.2020 is when the explosion happened in Beirut and my heart sank like I never knew it could. Into the depths of my stomach. i found out about it through a phone news notification before my sister and mom even knew what was happening. They just felt the earth shake beneath their car driving from Gemmayze up to Mansourieh. They had just left the port area a mere few minutes before. If I look back at my photos on my phone from that week, its solely screenshots of the explosion, articles, rubble, rummage and death. Trying to make sense of what happened, trying to understand what my family and friends are going through whilst being stuck in my apartment with Covid. Not being able to help the relief efforts being organised from Amsterdam by the amazing team behind @lebanese.nl or be able to go and bring a suitcase full most needed goods because there are no flights from Amsterdam to Beirut at all. All I could do was share the stories coming from friends in Beirut and donate, donate, donate. On august 10 my sis moved back from Beirut to Amsterdam leaving her boyfriend and their shattered apartment behind. I knew that this would be tougher than anything I could every imagine for her. leaving when you are needed the most? But she came back for a good job and for a future that she was unable to build in Lebanon. Something every Lebanese understands, because this brain drain has been going on for decades. we just didnt think it would happen to our generation. Being in Amsterdam where life is so good, so pure where everyone is sipping natural wine on their boats on the canals, where you are taken care of by the state feels fucked up when you know so many people are suffering, robbed of their livelihoods. We had to do something more to help and so @natashadebaets came to me with the idea of selling her home baked cakes to friends and family for Beirut. when we asked @maximevannamen to help us translate this into a menu the idea quickly grew into something bigger. Even though every penny counts, we wanted to do something that would raise a significant amount of money. Haven’t posted any work recently. Shot during the Covid-19 stay-at-home orders in May, the portraits I captured for @honolulumag ‘s Life Interrupted piece had to be shot socially distanced, mostly through windows or doorways. Because of the reflection issues in glass windows during the day (and the obvious darkness issues at night 😂), all of these photos were captured a half hour after sunset, or a half hour before sunrise. It was a diverse, amazing group of people, and a lot of fun to shoot. We’re all adapting to working during this new normal. Our third year together was a wild one. So many good things happened, as well as hard moments. But like the leather that represents this year we were flexible through it all while still remaining strong. We may have some scars and scratches but we are still here, still together and now with a new resiliency. . . My travel article on Zimbabwe appears in the new issue of Condé Nast Traveller, out this week. I was born and raised in the country and lived there after independence in 1980, editing a national magazine for ‘progressive young women’ at the age of 23. What trust they placed in me! What a ride it’s been! A couple of friends at home, currently suffering the effects of a severe economic depression, have asked how I could possibly encourage anyone to visit right now.
