The river mouth of the Mkosi River is a 1700 meters sand beach only accessible by foot (1km walk) and Land Rover. 4x4 cars could also make it. Cars can be parked directly in the southern river bank. It is a to and fro route. The road is gravel with some rocky areas covered by a thin layer of silt. Driving the way to the river mouth is less demanding than the way back, where there is a portion of 200 meters 25% up hill near a cliff. It is important to be aware of the weather report as rain makes the superficial silt turn into a very slippery layer of mud, turning the road into a very difficult terrain to drive through, especially up hill, and one can get stuck in the area. Nevertheless, it is possible to finding a safe higher point in order to avoid any possible flood. Once in the river bank, the scenery is just amazing. Chasing the holy grail of surfboards has changed a lot in the 21st century ... we seem to be more creative and willing to ride different craft... My mate @tim_richmond_ Just sent me a photo of an old single fin he bought that l loved and owned in 2005.... I started on single fins around the mid 70’s and was happy to jump ship when the Simon Anderson Thruster came to town around 1981... rode them like there was no other fin set up in the world ... until around 2005 Wayne’s @waynelynchsurfboards started playing with a modern Single fin design ... a hybrid of all the best things he’d left behind in the single fin design and what he developed in the twenty odd years of making Thrusters.! So one sunny old day down the coast l gave Wayne’s modern single fin a rumble in the oceanic jungle and couldn’t believe how well it went. It rekindled a desire to feel that smoothness and draw different lines in my surfing again ... lt made me realise how my surfing had become a bit stagnant and this design shift ignited a bit of fire 🔥 in the belly ... it’s funny how Wayne decided to turn left while the whole surf marketing machine and what Kelly Slater was riding was going straight ahead ... which most of the surfing population couldn’t ride anyway ... to narrow and to thin ... it seemed surfing had gone down a narrow rabbit hole .... So a good lesson for me and one l still use today is don’t ride the trends ... follow what feels right for you ... what makes you happy ... So after the magical ride l ordered a fleet... this one here is a 6’7 double flyer swallow ... also a 7’1 swallow & a 7’7 pintail ... all thicker and wider than ld ridden for the past 20 years but every SINGLE one of them ( pardon the pun) had some special magic that l still have fond memory’s of fifteen years later ... Aprende a detener el tiempo. Nuestros instintos conocen el presente, ellos están allí, siempre latentes, funcionando, sin hacerse sentir. Nuestra mente en cambio al pasar por el proceso de razonamiento, (aunque sea de forma muy rápida), conoce el pasado y el futuro, y por lo tanto, el tiempo. 👆🏽Watch the story behind the historic 2016 Quiksilver in Memory of Eddie Aikau event, where @zaknoyle swam for the entire day. Like seriously, the entire day. We had talked Quik into having him provide live social content from the water for Snapchat and Instagram. They loved the idea. We tested it and it was game on. What we didn’t account for was the 20,000+ people who would all be on their phones that day at The Bay (which slowed the file transfers down big time.) Zak was sending images from his Canon 7D to his iPhone which he was holding in his other hand while swimming. He would then send them to me and the Quik crew on the beach. I’ll never forget the first image that came through. He’d done it! The biggest recorded swell in event history and Zak is swimming, shooting and playing with his phone like it was just another day.
