For #tbt, some old building survey photos of Mount Pleasant Mansion (1-5) and Woodford Mansion (6-10) as Philadelphia celebrates World Heritage Week!! Besides Independence Hall (one of Americas few urban UNESCO World Heritage Sites), were a World Heritage City because of the rich array of historic buildings and cultural sites that are designated as National Historic Landmarks (NHL), including the parks gems of Georgian architecture: Mount Pleasant (designated 1974) and Woodford (designated 1967). Thanks to the City, the Fairmount Park Conservancy, the stewardship organizations, and countless other people who have dedicated their time, energy, and funds to preserving these outstanding landmarks in the East Park! An old #TBT newspaper clipping of Laurel Hill (aka: Randolph) Mansion. Built in 1767 by Rebecca Rawle, in 1828 it was purchased Dr. Philip Syng Physick, known as the Father of American Surgery. Its no surprise that a prominent doctor would see the advantage of having a country house to escape the repeated outbreaks of disease in colonial Philadelphia that puts our current crisis in perspective. Although decades had passed since the Yellow Fever scourge (that Dr. Physick himself survived), cholera broke out in the city in July 1832. And once again, a privileged class was able to socially distance at their summer homes, many that now comprise the Park Charms. Thankfully, the creation of Fairmount Park saved these houses from the ravages of progress. And fortunately, an early incarnation of the park saved many people from the ravages of cholera. Philadelphiaās death rates were one-quarter those in New York and one-twelfth of Montreal because of comparably clean and available water from the Fairmount Reservoir (Water Works) for drinking, bathing, and cleaning the streets. šš³ššæšš³ššæš The park system now allows for more equatable access to the green space that remains a literal lifeline of physical and mental health. FRANK SCHUMAN Developed in Northeast Philadelphiaās Tacony neighborhood in the early 20th Century, Shumanās āSun Engineā is a poignant reminder that while humanity has been slow to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, we have certainly not lacked the technology, or foresight, to do so. On the expansive lawn between an ivy-covered house and workshop at Disston and Ditman Streets, Shuman integrated his deep knowledge of glass, optics, and convection heating to create a powerful array capable of doing actual work. Tacony was a center for technological revolution during the period between 1890 and 1920. Frank Shuman was a world famous inventor who lived at Disston and Ditman Streets. Scientific American visited this community multiple times for such innovations as the casting of the mammoth statue of William Penn and all the domework adorning Philadelphias City Hall. This project was overseen by Francis Schumann, President of the Tacony Iron and Metal Company, the uncle of the inventor. Much attention was brought to this community as a result of Shumans numerous inventions, including wire glass and a gas mask so durable it was used in World War I. Shuman also was notable for solar power, having a solar powered engine on display during sunny days between 1907 and 1909. He later oversaw the worlds first solar energy plant in Egypt which pumped 6,000 gallons of irrigation water per minute. āOne thing I feel sure of,ā he wrote prophetically in a 1914 Scientific American article, āis that the human race must finally utilize direct sun power or revert to barbarism.ā Based on the output of his device, he reasoned that an array covering 20,250 square miles in an unpopulated portion of Africaās Sahara Desert would produce the same amount of energy as all of the coal mined in 1909. Displaying an understanding of the social value of solar, he urged āā¦all far-sighted engineers and inventors to work in this directionā not only for their own profit but āthe eternal welfare of the human raceā. #SAWTOWNUSA #DISSTON #TACONYVSGLOBALWARMING #HISTORICALTACONY - @tacony_19135 on Instagram

Itās #MansardMonday! Few and far between in Reno, UNR has some exceptional examples. Morrill Hall / 1885 Morrill Hall was the first building on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. A three-story (plus basement) āSecond Empireā-style edifice, the building was constructed in 1885-1886 after the relocation of the University of Nevada from Elko to Reno, a process that began in 1884. Relatively few Second Empire-style buildings remain in Reno, making this a rare local example of this particular type of Victorian architecture. The cornerstone was laid on Sept. 12, 1885 and the building was ready for occupancy by March of 1886. Designed by Reno architect M.J. Curtis, Morrill Hall was built for the sum of $13,500 and originally housed the entire State University until the Agricultural Experiment Station (1889) and Stewart Hall (1890) were built. Neither of those remains standing. Originally, the basement of Morrill Hall was divided into four rooms, with space for the janitor, storage, assay furnaces, quartz crushers, and workshops. The main floor contained the Principalās office (for the head of academics), a reception room, the Board of Regentsā room, a library, museum, assayerās office, assaying room, weighing room, lavatory, and gymnasium. On the second floor were a large lecture hall and two classrooms, and on the top floor, two large apartments, a general assembly room, and an armory. All instruction was provided by two professors. At the time it was built, Nevada was little more than a collection of rough mining camps and railroad towns. The new University hall symbolized the determination of the people of Nevada to provide educational opportunities for themselves and their children. The building was named after U.S. Senator Justin S. Morrill of Vermont, author of the 1862 Land-Grant College Act that made the founding of the University of Nevada possible. Much like the cars that reside here at Mather HQ, the building itself has quite a story to tell...ā ā Built in 1943 originally as an American field hospital, simply named āCamp 232ā.ā ā A turn of events a few years down the line saw Northwick Park oversee the medical treatment and rehabilitation of German prisoners of war by the 1000. ā Then, following being left unused for some years the entire park became a Polish resettlement camp. ā ā A quote from a remarkable lady and ex-resident who this week visited me in the place in which she grew up. ā āArriving at the park in 1948 was to me, aged five a true adventure, it was a happy place given our circumstances, a happy place in which we were finally safe. It was my home for fifteen years until I married, but really will always be home.āā ā Zosia was also able to share photographs with me of my showroom, then. ā Surprise surprise my building was where the wild parties were at (mostly)šŗš». ā Itās conversations such as the one I had here this week which remind me that people had serious guts and incredible gumption during those grief stricken times, yet still smiled, cracked on and drew positivity from their situation. ā A lesson to many of us... ā ā ā History lesson over, sorry to anyone who didnāt want to know š. ā - @mathercollectables on Instagram

May 30, 1806. Future President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, duels Charles Dickinson in Kentucky after Dickinson accused Jackson of cheating on a horse race and insulted Jacksonās wife. In the duel Dickinson would shot Jackson in the chest, and Jacksonās shot would kill Dickinson. The wound Jackson received would heal but the pain would stay with him for the rest of his life. This is one of many duels Jackson would participate in. Some estimates believe that Jackson had done 5 to 100 different duels in his life. _______________ #ushistory #americanhistory #history #usa #american #america #tagafriend #tagsomeone #tagaperson #duel #jackson #horseracing #horserace #killed #kentucky #frontier - @ushistorydaily on Instagram
