Bull kelp grows and thrives in rough and tumble coastal waters. Its anchored to the bottom by its rootlike holdfast, which has many fingerlike projections that hold the plant tight to rocks. From the holdfast, a flexible stem called a stipe extends to the surface gradually enlarging to form a single, round float. So many spawning staghorn corals!! 🙌 (Text adapted from @rescueareef) After multiple nights on the reef and in the @rescueareef underwater nursery last week, we are so thrilled to share that we were able to collect spawn from a total of 15+ staghorn coral parent genotypes with 85-90% fertilization success! This included outplants on the reef as well as larger colonies on coral trees in the nursery. This was the first time our team had watched for spawning in our restored corals, and what we saw far exceeded our expectations! 🎉 The coral larvae are now beginning to develop and settle in @secore_coral‘s Coral Rearing In-Situ Basins (CRIBs) at @frostscience. They will grow here until they are juveniles, ready for re-introduction to local reefs! Their integration into our coral restoration strategies will exponentially increase genetic diversity in both our nurseries and outplanting sites! 💪 Huge thanks to the amazing team, which included students and staff from @secore_coral, @rescueareef, @coralreeffutures, @umiamirsmas, and NOAA SEFSC. Since the on start of Covid-19 restrictions in Brunei, we received quite a few reports on ghost net sightings at our reefs (reports coming in at least once a month!). While many of us remain at home, some took the opportunity to head out to sea, casting nets over large areas including those of restricted zones. Whether or not they are for commercial purpose or leisure, we need to understand that these nets when left abandoned may get stuck on reefs or any hard surface along the seabed. This eventually damage or kill literally any marine lifes that get caught on them. Throughout this period, a team of heroes set out to sail to retrieve nets from the sea. Despite working in small numbers, these heroes managed to retrieve quite a huge amount of nets (on record, up to 36kg of trawling nets in one session!). Shoutout to our heroes @ponidivers & @oceanicquestdive ; our sea front liners during this tough time! Please support them by following their page and join them if you havent done so! One more day until California Biodiversity Day🌱 ! Let’s meet the Sheephead in its Kelp forest habitat! . Sheephead A common kelp forest member of the Wrasse family, Sheephead have some pretty cool adaptations. First of all these epic fish all start life as females (Girl Power) and morph into males around the teenage years. It is thought that food availability or environmental factors have a role to play in this gender change, but the jury is still out on the actual cause. Sheephead have big buck front teeth that they use to pry hard-shelled animal off of rocks and then along with their powerful jaws crush their prey. To avoid becoming a meal themselves, come night time these diurnal fish find a nice crevice to bed on down for the night and wrap themselves in mucous blanket that prevents predators from smelling their scent. Leading up to CA Biodiversity Day on September 7th, each day this week we will be featuring a fascinating plant or animal found in one of the many different habitat types you can find here at Crystal Cove State Park! . Did you know that California is the most biodiverse state in the U.S. and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet? Here are some amazing California numbers: Over 30% of all plant and vertebrate species in the U.S. occur in California. .
