On September 27, 1804, Anna McNeill Whistler was born in Wilmington. McNeill was made famous in the renowned painting, “Arrangement in Grey and Black: The Artist’s Mother,” commonly known as “Whistler’s Mother.” Shortly after her birth, Anna McNeill moved with her family to New York. In 1831, she married George Washington Whistler, a close friend of her brother. After growing up in the U.S. and Russia, attending West Point for a brief time and then moving to Paris to study art, the Whistlers’ son James began to split his time between Paris and London. He continued to develop his craft, becoming an important figure in contemporary art circles and generating controversy for his greater focus on color and arrangement than on realism. Anna Whistler moved to London in 1863 to live with her son, and, in 1871, he painted her as the figure in “Whistler’s Mother.” The painting was first shown in 1872, extending Whistler’s reputation, but it has received mixed reviews throughout much of its history. “Whistler’s Mother” now hangs in the Musee D’Orsay in Paris and has been rarely exhibited in the United States. Winterthur has been celebrating women all year with fascinating exhibits highlighting both the unsung and the well-known historical heroes - the disruptors, thinkers, creators, and influencers. Perhaps no woman influenced Winterthur more than the lady of the house, Ruth Wales du Pont. Our new exhibit of the same name opens October 1 in the Galleries, and introduces visitors to Ruth Wales, a talented musician, society figure, and hostess of four houses. The exhibit includes numerous photographs and documents from Winterthur’s vast archive documenting her life of hospitality, music, and travel. A meticulously crafted reproduction of her 1916 wedding gown, seen here, will be on display. Although the original dress has been lost to time, this beautiful reproduction, done by seamstress Karin Bohleke, director of the Fashion Archives and Museum of Shippensburg University, was created using early twentieth-century sewing techniques and newspaper clippings describing the dress. Opened in 1883, Robert Fair’s department store took up all four storeys of the building and sold ready-made clothing, fabrics, home goods, and had a dressmaking studio on-site! . Lord, this day is heavy, so i’m holding on to your sweet gifts. i’m holding on to You, Hope. • i am still pinching myself that the woman whose music i literally planned most of my wedding reception music around mentored me today... what. a. blessing. @christynockels was absolutely lovelier than i could’ve even imagined, and her sweet, biblical wisdoms will be cherished in my heart as the seasons change... • Christy ended up sharing a verse that was special to her... which ended up being the very first ‘song’ i ever wrote while sitting on the toilet being potty trained as a little girl: Psalm 37:5 • my mama always did that w me when i was little- she made tons of songs that sang scripture so that i could keep them as songs in my heart.. so i started the habit myself.. • she’d hung a plaque given to her by (i believe) my Great Grandma Dottie, a sweet as sugar woman of God one ever could meet.. i remember singing those words over and over (+ over haha) in that bathroom, where so many significant moments of my life happened ... never quite figured what in the WORLD it meant.. • still • idk HOW in the world my little girl self saw a scripture + wrote a diddy that sounded like reggae... but 🤷🏽♀️haha ohhhh.... ☺️sweet memories... • i reckon Christy’s forthcoming book ‘The Life You Long For: Learning to Live from a Heart of Rest’ is worth a read if you’re ready for some soulful rest- these times are trying + in Jesus is my healing • thank you so much @christianmusicmentor + @bradgmusic for blessing me + so many with a space for song + grace this week 🥰 • i love love love you 🤗 • repost / lyrics: @brandonlake • #jesus #selah - @the.renae.ssance on Instagram
