The United States of Letterpress edition includes books by 9 amazing letterpress printers from around the country. The #ualgraduateshowcase with @ibm continues, follow the link in our bio to explore for yourself. We caught up with Cade Jolley, BA Graphic Design graduate. Cade told us about his latest projects, the first ‘G is for Ghetto, S is for Stolen’ and second, ‘BlckChat’ which is his UAL showcase submission… “ I like to create work that feels present. I take a lot of inspiration from current events, personal experiences and pop culture in my creative practice, tending to deal with issues surrounding race, ethnicity, sexuality and other social topics. I also enjoy working with a variety of different styles and medias. ‘G is for Ghetto, S is for Stolen’ was inspired initially by my investigation into camp visuals/aesthetics used in Hip-hop videos where I recognised “ghetto aesthetics” being described as ‘camp’. The work explored the appropriation of Ghetto style/aesthetics and their cultural, political and historical importance to their creators, Black people. I wanted to aid in reclaiming Ghetto aesthetics and also educating the audience on the issues facing the erasure of the aesthetics roots. ‘BlckChat’ is an activity pack and card game I developed to aid young Black people in learning about their ethnicity. The project was in response to conversations with past and present Black youth, as well my own experience. The outcome being that there wasn’t enough education on the topics surrounding Black ethnicity or that the topic wasn’t addressed correctly. ” You can view ‘BlckChat’ on the UAL Showcase.
