El día que nos enteramos que mi papá había fallecido. Fue en La Guaira; era lunes. Nos fuimos a su apartamento y allí estaba sin ya estar. Del otro lado de la foto; en su cuarto. Allí estaba la prueba de que ya no estaba. Tomé esa foto porque es uno de los días más duros e importantes de mi vida. Inexplicablemente cogí el bolso de la cámara antes de bajar a su casa. Cuando lo vi reafirmé que lo único que realmente importa es entender el poder que tenemos por naturaleza; un poder al que –lamentablemente– una gran mayoría renuncia cuando decide buscar vivir la vida de otros; complacer las expectativas de gente que ni siquiera sabe que existen. Como todo lo que vive, un día muere y ya, todo sigue. Poco a poco fue llegando la gente querida. Mi mamá, tíos, primos, y amigos del alma, aunque alguno no esté en el encuadre, o simplemente no llegó. Allí estuvimos hasta que esa especie de pesadilla acabó. Y me digo pesadilla porque duele tanto que dan ganas de vomitar. Sin embargo agradecí algo maravilloso: mi papá se apagó y nada más. No hubo tragedia ni mucho más que un simple y definitivo adiós. Lo extraño. A veces escucho sus notas de voz y sonrío mientras me desgarro. A los meses me invitaron a Portugal (Flores, Açores) a dar un ‘TEDtalk’. Lo di sobre lo que sentí con la muerte de mi papá. “Quien vive no muere, así como tú, papá” fue el título que le di, y así lo pueden buscar en YouTube. Allí van a ver 17 minutos de desahogo y de diálogo con el Eldor (así le digo) que ya no está y con el que sigue estando. Aquí está mi papá. El artista. Eldor. El que mucha gente extraña y recuerda con peculiar entusiasmo. Esta foto la hice el 23.04.2018, el día que nos enteramos de su apagón. Mientras, todos los que leen esto, entiendan algo: usen su vida para hallar un propósito, aunque para mucha gente no tenga sentido. Cuestiónenlo todo. No pierdan el tiempo en tonterías, y sobre todo, no renuncien a su autenticidad, porque una vez la pierdes, no la puedes recuperar. Sean honestos, aunque eso aleje a mucha gente. Here with my daughter, Cleo, back on her first visit to Nepal at 18 months old when our family spent the winter in the Everest region. Cleo has an unusual bond with the natural world and loves the Snow Leopard, the elusive and threatened species, one of the more impressive apex predators of the Himalayan nations. Scanxiety It’s the fear felt by cancer patients as they await their scan results. Yes, it’s a real word, and yes, it’s one of the most feared in the cancer world. Other than my first few scans when I was initially diagnosed, I have been lucky enough to only have good scan results. BUT we all know the honeymoon can’t last forever and I’m sure that cancer has a way of throwing a curveball just when you’re feeling on track. My trick is to be prepared. I have all my guns loaded, ready to tackle tumour growth and/or metastases. I know what my next course of chemo will be and all of the expected side effects that come with it.  In addition, we are following up on trials and other alternatives if needed. I can’t sit back and wait for things to happen, I need to feel that I have some control over my future. Before my wedding in 2003, my dear friend @moonfrye gave me this lovely box with a poem inside about a couple who put a dollar in a box every time they made love and at their 50th wedding anniversary they had thousands of dollars to go travel the world together. I haven’t been great in the past few years about keeping up with the deposits but I still love this idea and digging thru to see all the currencies from places we have already been lucky enough to travel to all around the world. Pink (2016) Pink: On Explicit Equality I remember when I first watched Pink — I was filled with rage, with disgust but at the same time also with a little hope that maybe “if we save our boys, then our girls will be safe.” However, Pink as a movie stands out even in the realm of those films that are made with the sole intention of bringing change maybe because of how explicit it is. Pink’s dialogue and screenplay resemble the message of the film which is “Na sirf ek shabd nahi, apne aap mein ek poora vaakya hai. ise kisi tarah ke spashtikaran, explanation ya vyakhya ki zarurat nahi hoti. Na ka matlab sirf na hi hota hai — NO means NO.” Pink unlike most films isn’t open to interpretation, it presents you with the hard truth in bold and doesn’t leave any space for questions to be raised. Just like the dialogue, the film is a whole in itself and doesn’t require any explanation because it portrays the harsh reality in the harshest way possible with the most straightforward screenplay. The impact of Pink hits differently than other change-oriented films because it doesn’t tell you a story of injustice leaving it upon you to form an opinion, instead through one story it forces you to see the patriarchy and doesn’t offer you the option to believe otherwise. Deepak Sehgal’s “Girls’ Safety Manual” is as direct as it gets, devoid of any poetry or metaphors, which is probably why it was so powerful. Lately, we have seen the classification between masala movies and socially-relevant movies, but Pink surpasses both. It goes beyond the realm of just entertainment with elements like Girl’s Safety Manual that become a weapon against misogyny and an ode to every woman who resonates with it. Alas, Pink bring sexism and chauvinism alive with its spot on dialogues that don’t stray even for a moment, instead, they hit you right at the core of your heart making you realise that the hurricane is at your doorstep. Homem de pouco estudo mas, com muita sabedoria e garra em lutar pela vida, e principalmente, pela família. Casou-se com Ana Gracita, sua fiel companheira por 62 anos, que já é nossa Anja-Vó-Bisa há 1 ano e 8 meses. Sou o 4° filho dos cinco, que ele como metalúrgico e vendedor ambulante, com muito trabalho, batalha e dificuldades, educou e formou para o bem com muito amor. O que mais marcou nossa infância era o seu zelo e carinho pela família, e principalmente pelos filhos. Sempre quando recebia o salário do mês, ele levava a gente pra comer pastel. Aquilo era sagrado pro Seu Acrísio, e a gente sabia (com sabedoria de criança) como doía para ele quando isso não era possível pela falta de dinheiro. Mas, entendíamos e sabíamos esperar e curtir os irmãos e a família, do jeito que nos era permitido. Acho que aí está o grande legado da nossa formação: não se frustrar pelo que não aconteceu, e nos pormenores, valorizar a vida. Nosso pai trabalhou até seus 78 anos, quando foi acometido de um AIT (Acidente Vascular Temporário), que já dura 11 anos. Hoje evidenciado por forte demência, que lhe tirou a fala e limitou seus movimentos. Só anda com muita dificuldade, com a necessidade de se apoiar em alguém - da cama para o sofá - onde passa o dia, observando tudo ao seu redor. A doença tirou-lhe os movimentos porém, não tirou o seu brilho no olhar quando falamos com ele mesmo a distância. Nós imaginamos que ele entende tudo, ouve tudo, mas só balbucia algumas palavras; fica muito eufórico, quando fazemos chamada de vídeo, e tem um amor gigantesco por crianças e animais (são os que mais lhe roubam um sorriso, e um brilho no olhar). 3 Faço contato quase todos os dias através de vídeo, com minhas irmãs, que cuidam dele como um filho muito amado, e também são anjos em nossa família (abraçaram como propósito de vida cuidar de nossos pais por amor, carinho e zelo)... My father Graham, my hero and mentor and sweet and funny dad passed away, in Australia on Saturday. I didn’t get to hug or kiss him, but we blew kisses at our screens and were able to say goodbye. I’m grateful I was able to thank him for all his love and support. - - My father was tough, a brilliant journalist and editor, as was his father, Colin. My dad was a third generation journalist, my family having founding links with The Dominion and the Evening Post, in Wellington, New Zealand. - - I can’t think of a day growing up when there were not newspapers on the kitchen table - usually circled with a fat black pen, critiquing stories and headlines, often with exclamation marks. Accuracy was paramount. Credibility - your name counts for everything - key. Take the lead on a story and don’t drop it. Question, question, question. - -My father left New Zealand to work as a journalist in Australia but kept strong family ties. His first stop was Hobart, Tasmania, then Melbourne, Queensland and Hong Kong. My beautiful Mum Jennifer was his softer side, and did double duty looking after my brother Michael, my twin sisters Sharon and Rachel and I when my father was putting the paper to bed every night. They had their 52nd wedding anniversary this week, and have 11 grandchildren. Every morning, rain or shine he made coffee for my mum. I can hear the grinder and espresso machine whirring, milk steaming. - - Somehow Dad managed to make everyone feel special and on a recent visit taught our son Jack how to make a fire and billy tea and to make a toy wood boat for the creek. They shared interests in chess, music and Latin. Dad loved to fish. (he was known as ‘Snapper king’ with photos to prove it) and to boat. Guess what🤷🏼‍♀️ Cambell played her very 1st volleyball game tonight and did really good 🏐 We have been trying to find another sport she was interested in for a year after her pitching coach suggested the idea. @allzonesfastpitch She wanted her trying another sport to get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The catch was, it couldn’t be with mom or dad😱 So NO more reviving her dream to compete in the CrossFit Games😂 J/K, surprisingly enough, Cambell doesn’t do any arm workouts to get better at pitching...only leg workouts! This is going to be heavy. Finding a picture to post for this occasion was easy, for the same reason you see so many dads being honoured for their relationship with their kids. Its the moms who care to take all the pictures and forge our bonds, while we happily take the applause for what little we do. Just under a year ago, Amara Ali Laird was born. My precious daughter. She is pure magic. I hope I can be a better father than I have so far a partner, friend, son, brother, or boss. I always wanted to be a dad, so badly. I begged for this baby. I always wanted to grow up, be older, responsible, respected. I chased this dream at huge costs, leaving a trail of deep regret. Being out on my own at 14 and self educating myself, I felt that I had made it on my own, so the world owes me mine now #whiteprivilege. Young, arrogant, desperate for praise and respect, uneducated, financially illiterate, worshipping, I was the ideal, gullible candidate. I blindly followed a privileged white mentor, and I behaved like a pitbull and acted like a pawn. I went along with getting married to someone who did not love me and deserved better than me, a marriage that was over before it was even underway. I poured mine and my partners life savings into the downpayment for someone elses mess, an exorbitantly overpriced, failing business, putting us both in heavy debt for the better part of a decade. Way to grow up fast. Im older now, I have far more responsibility, but I dont have the respect of the one person from whom I need it most. Myself. I want to earn that look on Amaras face when I get home. I sincerely apologize to employees of the old regime and our best friends and family for sticking their necks out for me in troubled times. Deciding against absorbing the stress and strain of constantly trying and failing to make MY irrational dreams come true, some have left. It’s been a rough few weeks and it’s been difficult to process that we lost my Grandmere a little over a week ago. She passed peacefully in her sleep. I wish i could have found a more fitting photo. She was always my strongest champion growing up and always encouraged me to go against the grain. I wasn’t available the past several years as we grew our business and in reflection I do miss that I wasn’t there for her when she needed it most. She always took time to call and ask how I was doing even when I knew she was hardly listening due to bad hearing. I’ll never forget summers in France with her and Papi Lucien. They were truly the greatest grandparents you could ask for. I know that now she’s resting easy with Lucien. Its fair to say, weve suffered from a bit of the wedding 👰 blues this weekend. It was one of those things that we knew exactly what was happening and yet we couldnt help bickering and falling out over the slightest of things - from laundry 🧺 , to hanging dinosaurs 🦖 , to lost clothes. People said it would happen and I sort of shrugged it off 🤷‍♀️, thinking that wed arranged it so quickly, how could I get the full dose of theses down days, as surely this only happened when youd done the proper years prep! But nope, safe to say you are not immune to it, however quickly you pull it together. Here we are laughing at how moody we were on our morning walk. On Sunday afternoon friends and family gathered for a Celebration of Life at the Veneto Centre in Vaughan to pay our respects to our good friend Catia who passed away on July 12, 2020. 💔 Condolences Alex Settino and the Fregonese Family. ❤️ @catsmeow6299 was a beautiful human inside out out and loved by every person who met her. Catia struggled with many health issues her entire life including heart problems, a heart transplant and cancer but somehow she was always smiling and positive and felt blessed for every day above ground. I have so many fond memories of birthday bashes, a food feasts at home and restaurants and good times at galas and fundraisers during the 10 years that @rominajmonaco and I knew her. Catia was amazing person and would always reach out to see how we were doing even when she was in the hospital especially during Rominas mothers battle with Cancer. She truly was a special and wonderful woman that we will never forget. When I think of a persons life I think about their purpose, passion and legacy. Catia taught us not to worry or to complain about the small things. Life is to short so live it to the fullest! Always be kind to one another. Catia left us too soon but made a difference and impact in her 59 years on earth. We were blessed to know her and better for the time we spent with her. 100 years young! So blessed to be able to spend the day with Nona to celebrate her 100th birthday! Since we grew up right next door to our Grandparents, I used to always tell Nona to get some Mtn Dew and Little Debbie oatmeal Cream pies (because my mom never would). She never failed me. My favorite memories include me running to her house everyday (after getting my chores done) to sit and visit with her over an ice cold Mtn Dew. In all seriousness though... Nona is pure grit. Here are just a few things I learned from Nona over the years... 1) Never hope for it more than you work for it. 2) Great things take time. Be patient. Be persistent. 3) Get outside. I dont ask for much but Im asking with all my heart for this - that my mother be protected and supported with love as I continue the biggest transition of my life, without her. Shes been living with us almost exclusively since Cairo was born two and a half years ago and its been rough... rougher than rough, its taken my beloved Davana and I past our limit. She has singlehandedly plunged us into the darkest pits of despair and it has felt hopeless at times. If it wasnt for our fam and soulfam I dont know how we would have been able to stay positive. I own my failures in not seeking extra support in the beginning, I was naive to believe it would all work itself out so long as I kept going but Ive been humbled. Having denied it, avoided it, displaced it it feels good to finally come to a place of clarity and acceptance of my responsibility for her care. Part of that is having healthy boundaries with her and holding the truth that I can no longer sacrifice mine and my familys well being by having her live in the same home as us. I know other families have been able to successfully care for their parents with dementia and have found it very fulfilling, but its just not my case. My mother is carrying a lifetime of unprocessed trauma and as her memory continues to fade, so to does her capacity to hold it in. As such I can no longer allow her to project her pain and her fears upon Davana, who has been so good to her. I broke down in tears more than a few times in her inability to receive all the love Davana was giving her. It was so sad to see that she simply couldnt receive it. Yet, we harbor no ill will towards her and rather than resentment for the extra pain shes put our family through, I feel gratitude for the lessons and to know I must take a new approach to caring for her moving forward. Shes in Las Vegas right now near my sister, and is in good spirits. We had a great conversation earlier and she expressed her love for us and I felt it. She misses Cairo but said she doesnt want to be a barrier to us fulfilling our dreams. I let her know she wasnt and that once we find our home and settle in Ill find a place for her not too far. Uma boa ideia de escola é aquela que apresente ferramentas para que os indivíduos se formem essencialmente coletivos. Uma boa ideia de escola é aquela com um ambiente intrinsecamente acolhedor e inclusivo, alicerçado num aguçado senso comunitário. Uma boa ideia de escola é aquela que prefira estimular as dúvidas do que empilhar as certezas. Uma boa ideia de escola é aquela que transmita os valores verdadeiramente fundamentais para o exercício da cidadania, tal como a liberdade. A EDEM é uma boa ideia de escola. Mais que isso: é uma realização que se renova a cada ano. Era, quando foi criada há 51 anos. Ainda era, há 23 anos, quando concluí por lá meu Ensino Médio. Seguia sendo, cinco anos atrás, quando mudamos nosso estilo de vida para que nossos filhos pudessem estudar na escola em que estudei.
