Wild that it’s already been four years since I first broke the news that a court had granted someone a gender change to nonbinary for the first time in history. The year that followed was an exciting blur of reporting and then watching that reporting influence policy at the state and local level not just here in the U.S., but eventually around the world. It was the first time I saw my work have an impact on that scale, and it reinvigorated my sense of journalism’s mission: to help marginalized communities have a voice and a platform, to tell stories that help people see themselves reflected in their truth. As hard as it can be to work in media, with low pay, constant layoffs, and cyclical burnout, the opportunity to not just take part in history but to help steer its direction is too good to pass up. So much has happened since these articles were written; what was then a fairly new terminology (slowly gaining speed over its predecessor, genderqueer) has become widely adopted. And now we even have our own holiday. There’s so much more I could say but I have tears in my eyes and it’s getting hard to type.
