This week, a shipment showed up at @crookedbeatrecords with all the records that hadn’t shown up on Record Store Day, including this one: Various Artists, ‘Sunrise On The Blues’. 🌞 Sun Records is best remembered for mid/late 50s rock and roll artists like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, but before the rise of rock and roll, Sun Studios made its name recording blues artists. And what artists! Many of the greats, including Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton, and Earl Hooker (all of whom appear on this album,) recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis before continuing north to Chicago. 🌞 Every song on this compilation is a delight to listen to, and as a whole, it shows what an amazing variety of creative directions musicians were taking with the blues in 1950s Memphis. The album opens with Howlin’ Wolf’s joyful take on big band classic “In The Mood”, and goes on to feature one-man bands Joe Hill Louis and Dr. Ross the Harmonica Boss, early R&B from Johnny Adams, harmony singing from the Prisonaires, country blues from old-timer Sleepy John Estes, and piano blues by Rosco Gordon, the godfather of ska who never set foot in Jamaica. The stylistic diversity on this compilation is just amazing. It would be a great beginner blues compilation, as well as a great addition to an aficionado’s shelves. 13 years today. Made it in a bedsit on Upper Clapton Road. Quit my job in a pub about two weeks after it came out. We couldn’t get a distro deal with ST holdings because some absolute tool there didn’t get it. We did sale and return independently to every small record shop in the U.K. I think. Post office everyday sending records all over the country. Bill Dolan at Cargo Records took the final 200 from us and we sold out of our first release. So excited to finally get my hands on a #Thorens TD160. Since my preamp has two phono stages I was able to fully A/B compare it with my Music Hall (Pro-Ject) 5.1 and the Thorens wins hands down. Amazing, since this one was built in 1970 and has all original parts (except for a newer cartridge) and belt. Big ups for great engineering. Plus, you cant beat the classic styling. Honestly, this makes me happy just to look at it. I know... Im a dork.
