I’ve been a big fan of Run the Jewels since I first heard RTJ2 back in 2014. Since then we’ve had RTJ3, which I really liked, but didn’t think was necessarily on the same level as RTJ2. The record wasn’t as in your face and aggressive. They took what seemed as a more laid back approach. With this new record, it seems to be a decent blend of RTJ2 and 3. Which sounds perfect, right? Well, for some reason this record isn’t hitting as hard for me as I would have hoped. Don’t get me wrong, Mike and Jamie are two of the best in the hip hop game currently. There are some really great topical songs on here, with killer fucking production and some great features, but as a whole, it just didn’t hit me as hard as I was hoping it would. Maybe I’m just more hyped about other hip hop at the moment? I still think RTJ2 is my favorite of theirs, but I’ll still continue to support and listen to everything these guys put out. This happens enough time - at the first listening the album no longer evokes love, but the more you try to understand it, the deeper it starts to catch. In this record, the design and the vinyl itself are especially catchy. At first, it is not attractive at all, but in the rays of sunlight it becomes delightful. This week, a shipment showed up at @crookedbeatrecords with all the records that hadn’t shown up on Record Store Day, including this one: Various Artists, ‘Sunrise On The Blues’. 🌞 Sun Records is best remembered for mid/late 50s rock and roll artists like Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis, but before the rise of rock and roll, Sun Studios made its name recording blues artists. And what artists! Many of the greats, including Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton, and Earl Hooker (all of whom appear on this album,) recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis before continuing north to Chicago. 🌞 Every song on this compilation is a delight to listen to, and as a whole, it shows what an amazing variety of creative directions musicians were taking with the blues in 1950s Memphis. The album opens with Howlin’ Wolf’s joyful take on big band classic “In The Mood”, and goes on to feature one-man bands Joe Hill Louis and Dr. Ross the Harmonica Boss, early R&B from Johnny Adams, harmony singing from the Prisonaires, country blues from old-timer Sleepy John Estes, and piano blues by Rosco Gordon, the godfather of ska who never set foot in Jamaica. The stylistic diversity on this compilation is just amazing. It would be a great beginner blues compilation, as well as a great addition to an aficionado’s shelves. Had a nice 🤯 moment recently. . In 2005, shortly before I knew about Silver Apples, I was obsessed with @cariboumusic’s album “The Milk of Human Kindness.” I was particularly in love with the song “Hello Hammerheads.” A couple weeks ago I decided to pop on “Milk” and give it long overdo revisit. I put on my fav song and the hairs stood up on my arms. For the first time it was so clear to me that “Hammerheads” was a loving tribute to Silver Apples’ “Seagreen Serenades.” . I’m aware this is a very nerdy, potentially boring, realization to have—but I was blown away regardless. It was a connection that made me flash through my many years as a music lover. My ears as a young college guy weren’t yet trained for something as strange and special as Silver Apples, but teachers like Caribou pointed me in the right direction. A blind buy that I made a couple of days ago. Prior to this purchase, I had only HEARD OF Lee Morgans The Sidewinder album... that its apparently good, but WOW I didnt realize that its THIS GOOD! Freakishly good. Ive never heard such an enjoyable jazz album since discovering Dave Brubecks Time Out or Sonny Rollins Saxophone Colossus. The first two tracks on Side A called Totem Pole and the self title track completely blew me away. In addition, Side B is almost as amazing, if not just as good. I havent stopped listening to this record since getting it. So excited to finally get my hands on a #Thorens TD160. Since my preamp has two phono stages I was able to fully A/B compare it with my Music Hall (Pro-Ject) 5.1 and the Thorens wins hands down. Amazing, since this one was built in 1970 and has all original parts (except for a newer cartridge) and belt. Big ups for great engineering. Plus, you cant beat the classic styling. Honestly, this makes me happy just to look at it. I know... Im a dork. Out tomorrow (9/26) for @recordstoredayus 2020 (Drop #2) is this 3xLP live album by @thereplacements, coincidentally recorded live at UW-Milwaukee in 1989 and mastered here at Mystery Room Mastering 30 years later. This is a Record Store Day exclusive limited to 8500 copies and was originally part of the Dean Man’s Pop box set that came out on @rhino_records last year but is now available on vinyl for the first time. Chris Bellman at Bernie Grundman Mastering (@bgmastering) cut the lacquers and it sounds amazing on vinyl. The gatefold packaging features great liner notes by @bobmehr3 and the album was produced for release by @diverssongs and Bob Mehr.
