🍃 SALTBUSH 🍃- A hardy Australian native plant, the saltbush is a small spreading shrub that can withstand dry salty soils such as those found in the desert plains and by the beach (especially the windy island Of Tasmania). Saltbush leaves may be treated like a leafy vegetable, enjoyed blanched, sautéed, wrapped around meat or fish, used in salads, or for stuffing poultry. They can be dried and used as a herb or sprinkle and are delicious fried in grape seed oil. Harvest Saltbush leaves by simply plucking or cutting, taking only as much as you need so the plant may be left to grow, ensuring a year-round supply. Saltbush is a fast-growing shrub commonly used today as a livestock grazing plant. (Makes the meat taste so delicious) Both seeds and leaves are viable bush tucker, with the leaves salty in flavour and rich in protein, antioxidants and minerals. Solo road trip west to play a couple shows day one. I hadn’t had the pleasure of seeing the Sandhills of Nebraska until yesterday. As Mari Sandoz and Jim Harrison have composed most of my reading the past few months, finding a way to Cheyenne via Northern Nebraska couldn’t have come at a better time. I was lucky enough to make the whole day’s trip without ever setting tire on an interstate and I gotta say the Sandhills are easily among the most beautiful places I’ve ever seen. Their beauty is whispered gently in a lonely and old voice and unlike their more aggressive mountain relatives I did not see any tourist traffic nor wealthy villages. If my family was with me I would’ve liked to stay for a month. With so much uncertainty it has been good to see that big parts of the West are still the West. Shoutout to @corkdorkwineco for the grapes @iamchloeavila for the veggies and @dje_dragon for the pan. Tomorrow @banjodave1 and I will actually get on a stage together and play some songs. It’s been the most beautiful spring & early summer this year, which makes it an even more frustrating time for couples who were hoping to get married over this period. Life has its challenges & Covid-19 is certainly one of them. Let’s take a deep breath & take some positives out of all this. There has been time for reflection, time to do all those little tasks which never get done. There has been saved time, no evenings out & commuting. Thankfully our daughter is very competent at helping her Dad work on things. In this case I was running the skid steer to do the lifting that needed done. When we start our day we never know what could change our plan before the day is finished. “Since the lockdowns, elk have been taking over in larger ways. One week for a few days, about 100 elk took over the local high school football field. Ive been noticing a lot more animal activity as I go for a hike at least once a week. Lots of snakes have popped up where I have not seen before. The bunnies are also now free to live without humans trying to capture them. I also went surfing and a baby grey whale jumped up out of the water about 15 feet from me, two times. This was surprising and I caught the wave that came after it jumped both times. The guy I was surfing with said never in his whole life has he seen a baby grey whale jump that close to a surfer. This was arguably the most incredible moment of my life. I would like to note that it is also a privilege to be able to access nature, but one of the biggest positives in my life and people in my community during this lockdown, is that we have been able to connect with nature in more frequent ways. #DWFnotillrotation Autumn, first year, first crop. We sowed this mixed species cover crop on April 15th. Mid autumn has proved great timing for it in this mild winter climate. The mix included: cereal rye, barley, oats, broad beans, daikon radish, linseed, crimson clover, chickpeas, fenugreek, snow peas, & wooly pod vetch. We will be harvesting snow peas and broad beans from this cover crop. Very inspired by research done by the soil scientist, Dr Christine Jones - check out her presentation on quorum sensing in the soil microbiome. My first contribution to @thewildeastuk. Behold a Wedge (not a wood, not a hedge). Ive planted many trees on the farm but the self-set ones are the best. By allowing our field boundaries to naturally thicken, we can easily (and cheaply) improve habitat and connectivity for wildlife. Many don’t appreciate the roll of modern plant breeders in our lives of plentiful food and beer. On the right (laying flat) is the 6-row from 1957 we brought back from a few seeds. The left (standing tall) is a modern 2-row. It’s great we live in a bountiful time, but the beauty of craft products is that we don’t have to be so quantity driven. Been working on my quarin-tan, getting shit done, taking each day as it comes, knowing its all going to work out. Ive been on a 40 day alcohol-free fast and really hope I can celebrate at one of my many favorite restaurants or bars when its all done. My heart truly goes out to the entire service industry: restaurants, bars, music venues, music stores, retail, musicians, photographers, hotels, motels... everything that relies on the interaction of customers. Its going to be a long tough road ahead and the only thing I can think to do is focus on that which is in my control. Earlier this month, Governor DeSantis and the Cabinet approved a Florida Forever land acquisition and three conservation easements protecting over 3,800 acres. These land acquisitions will enhance natural and cultural resources, improve water quality and provide expanded recreational opportunities. Heres the details: 🌳The Etoniah/Cross Florida Greenway Florida Forever Project includes 1,901 acres in Marion County. This will become part of Marjorie Harris Carr Cross Florida Greenway State Recreation and Conservation Area. This vital land acquisition will protect wildlife including the black bear and scrub jay while also providing expanded recreational opportunities. 🌳The easements total 1,951 acres and include parcels in Peace River Refuge, Seven Runs Creek and Myakka Ranchlands. These new additions will ensure protections for critical aquatic and wildlife areas, water quality, wildlife and habitats for endangered plants.
