Past Exhibition Highlights Series Béatrice Coron: The Secret Life of Cities September 4th 2007 – January 11th 2008 Béatrice Coron: The Secret Life of Cities presents a selection of Coron’s large-scale paper-cutouts of urban environments created over the past decade. Coron’s cities are complex narratives teeming with life. Figures in silhouette fill busy streets and can be seen through every window and doorway. In some, the underground and underwater environment is also a part of the city as well as skies filled with helicopters, hot air balloons, and angels. The stories are intended to unfold in the mind of the viewer. Coron’s technique is paper-cutting—she has made tiny pin books and cut paper scrolls 50 feet long. Often created as multiples, the works are hand-cut from Tyvek. Coron’s passion for working in silhouettes perhaps derives from her French roots; she was born and raised in Lyon, France. The very word “silhouette” comes from King Louis XV’s unpopular Minister of Finance, Etienne de Silhouette, who slashed so many budgets that his name became synonymous with cutting paper. Perusing this book may be a perplexing and engaging issue. There is certifiably not a solid plot to the story, nor any human heroes .Neither is it some kind of creature petting guide. Looking back on old projects...This is a zine I made for my residency at the @risolab in the fall of 2016. I was experimenting with short narratives and color combinations and came up with this quick little story. i has semi-recently escaped from Florida (now I’m desperate to get back) and wanted to playfully express my need to find a home where I would feel accepted. I printed it in teal line art with green and yellow interiors. I miss making fast, dumb zines like these. I’m too precious and hard on myself sometimes. Riso has always been a way for me to release control of my work and lose a bit of that pressure. It’s always been a place to play and experiment with stories and feelings on the tip of my tongue- right at that moment. I’m still so thankful for my time during the Risolab residency where I could experiment without fear of how much a print run would cost. I learned so much during that semester. Unfortunately this zine is no longer available...it’s had its time lol and I’m a little sick of it, but I plan to start experimenting more, now that I have a machine of my own. Some of the things I love about it: - Each piece represents a country or region and most are shaped close to the country’s actual shape (of course, simplified since it’s a cartoon illustration) - The capital of each country is written (and a symbol/object that corresponds to the place!) - Great attention to detail on EVERY country mentioned (I’ve seen a number of world map puzzles where The Philippines is hardly recognisable or even labelled!) . We revisited it again last week for geography lessons and Luke made so many new connections and realizations. And here’s the Fall 2019 tape from last year. I really like this design but I remember it being really time consuming and tedious because of all the leaves. We actually repossessed some of the leaves from this for our wedding RSVP things. I remember feeling really down during this period of time for reasons I couldn’t really pin down. I think it lasted for like two months last autumn and it kinda sucked. I would be having a normal day and then just be hit with this feeling out of nowhere and suddenly feel completely deflated and like I wanted to just lie on the floor for a bit and this would happen pretty much every day. I felt like something needed to change which is weird because I didn’t end up changing anything and it kinda just went away. A View of the Catskill Mountain House / Copied from a picture by S. Cole copied from a picture by T. Cole / 1848 2020 Oil and graphite on canvas 15 3/8 x 23 7/16 My current project, American Paradise, reframes the history of the Hudson River School to give visibility to the many women affiliated with this iconic movement historically associated with men. “A View of the Catskill Mountain House / Copied from a picture by S. Cole copied from a picture by T. Cole / 1848” is the first in a series of paintings that refers to works created by Sarah Cole, Louisa Davis Minot, and several other women who hiked and painted alongside—and often apart from—the men affiliated with this movement. Executed in the tradition of copying exemplary paintings, these paintings, in the form of “unfinished” copies, seek to give value and visibility to works created by these women that have been undervalued, under-recognized, and in many cases, lost. This piece references A View of the Catskill Mountain House, an 1848 painting by Sarah Cole that was copied from a painting by Thomas Cole, her brother. Like his original painting on canvas, Sarah Cole’s painting is around 15 x 23 inches. In keeping with this and the tradition of copying, my painting is a similar size and facture as its two precedents. However, in my version, the copy is in process and is being painted from what looks like a clipped image of the original taped to the upper right corner of the canvas. In fact, this “source material”–the ostensible reference for the “unfinished” painting–is painted in trompe l’oeil, making it the “true copy” of Sarah Cole’s original painting. Together, the two approaches in the painting simultaneously point to invisibility and call into question the tradition of copying, which historically functioned as both a learning process and a process of homage. Both attribute an inherent value to the original as worthy of being copied and disseminated and more significant than the hand and voice of the artist-copier. Ultimately, this painting and the other works in the series make visible the act of historical recovery and acknowledge that act as one that is always in progress and never finished. - @annaplesset on Instagram

I often wonder if it looks ‘glamorous’ to others or mysterious and wise - and it can be some of those things. But, what I do is work from the heart to heal each soul I read. Its more than just a tarot reading. It’s tough work. It’s deep work. There can be heavy themes. However, it is work that I absolutely love. And for every one of you glorious and brilliant souls I get to call a clients; I’m beyond thankful, grateful, lucky and honored to do this work and be here for you. This work found me and I moved towards it. I didn’t become a reader because it was on trend or cool. I didn’t become a reader when it WAS cool. I have always been this way. I don’t need to explain to you why I have taken time off because I know you care about me and my offerings. But I want to explain because I feel it needs to be heard. My mother said: are you sure you want to say no to people? And I replied, I have to say yes to me. This is BOUNDARY work and it has been a huge theme for many of us right now. Boundaries are about giving yourself what you need to be nourished and strong. To drink from your cup to feel full and complete; and that can come with a hard NO. It’s ok! We are such a yes, yes, yes society and where has it left us? Fighting, misaligned, lost, angry, sick, living beyond our means, drowning in debts, burnt out. This is the antithesis of my work. And if I’m going to teach it I need to live it. Rest. Stop. Relax. Heal. Go slow. It’s not a race. The people that need your healing and teachings will find you. So. I won’t be back to full speed - please understand. I will have some appointments available. And know, that this is so I can give you the greatest quality and attention. I am here for YOU. En este contexto de distancias algunas cosas toman nuevos significados. Hace cerca de un año hice estas ilustraciones para el calendario de @caja_baja . Si bien me tocaron dos meses separados los pensé juntos, como una breve narrativa que saltaba en el tiempo. En marzo una guitarrista desde las palmeras de la Rambla Sur mientras un vecino la mira atento desde el Salvo en setiembre. La limitación de dos tintas fue trampeada para lograr el degrade de atardecer y mar, impreso con destreza por el maestro @estampador_santacruz . Varios detalles de la ilustración me llevan a la obra de @fidelsclavo , siempre presente en mi imaginario desde las tapas del Darno. Los de esta edición tampoco defraudan. Con ilustraciones inspiradas en escenas cotidianas de Brighton, la ciudad donde nació la primera tienda The Body Shop, se proponen seguir luchando por un mundo más justo, más inclusivo y respetuoso con el medio ambiente y, por lo tanto, más bello. La acción solidaria de este año se centra en apoyar a diferentes organizaciones sociales que ayudan a mujeres víctimas de violencia de género y, además, especialmente afectadas por las consecuencias de la crisis de la Covid-19. My last edition of @suitcase, the ironically titled Freedom Issue (😂) is out this week. Despite the challenges of putting its final stages together during lockdown and while navigating a redundancy, I’m really proud of the end result, which contains thoughtful, gorgeous features from the likes of @emilygarthwaite, @sophy_roberts, @davidyarrow, @joewhoward and @patmcgrathreal. A little excerpt from my Ed’s Letter: “There are no easy answers as to how we can navigate the world and our impact on it more thoughtfully, whether with regards to the natural environment, entrenched inequality or the legacy we leave. But if we have learned anything from the horror show that is 2020, it is that it is absolutely imperative to spend time trying. Because while moments of crisis can seem terrifying and opaque, they also offer the opportunity for total reinvention. As the writer Rebecca Solnit beautifully puts it, “It’s as if the pack ice has broken up, the water starts flowing again and boats can move through places they could not during winter.” Travel has always been synonymous with escape, but in the new world order true freedom will not mean being able to hop on and off planes and go wherever we want, whenever we want. Instead, those of us lucky enough to emerge with our health and our means intact have a responsibility to rethink the validity of what we once assumed was our right.” Thank you to all the bloody wonderful contributors I’ve worked with over the last 11 issues, to @serenaguen for the opportunity and to the rest of the team for indulging my madcap ideas. (ნაწილიIII)რა გასხია? ვკითხე მე.არომატებს დიდი გავლენა ქონდა ჩემზე. მომღიმარი სახით გამიზიარა გამაბრუებელი საიდუმლო, რომელიც ტაიტის ვანილის და ციტრუსების ნაზავი აღმოჩნდა.ეს იყო ზეთი და ადგილობრივი ქალი ამზადებდა.კიდევ მომიყვა რამდენიმე ისტორია ტაიტიში ცხოვრებაზე.უფრო და უფრო საინტერესო ხდებოდა მისი მოსმენა.ჩემი ღამის კავალერი, მწერალი აღმოჩნდა.იქ გაეტარებინა ორი წელი და ექვსი თვე. რამდენიმე დღის ჩამოსული იყო, ახალ დასრულებული რომანით და სასტუმრო ატლასში იყო გაჩერებული ჯერ კიდევ ამოულაგებელი ბარგით.მწერალი, იუბილარის ბიძაშვილი აღმოჩნდა.ტაიტის მზით გაჯერებული მოგონებების და ისტორიების მოსმენაში დრო გაიპარა.ამასობაში ბალახებში ჩამალულ ჭრიჭინებს მობეზრდათ ელექტრონული მუსიკა და თავისი სიმღერები შემოგვთავაზეს.ხალხის უმეტესობაც გაკრეფილიყო ეზოდან და ჩვენს ჭიქებშიც გათავებულიყო შამპანური.სიმპატიურმა მწერალმა ადგილი შეიცვალა, შემავიწროვა და ჩემს გვერდით წამოგორდა.დაბალზე წვერი, გარუჯული კანი, მუქი თბილი თვალები, საოცარი არომატი და უკიდეგანოდ თავისუფალი სული - ეს იყო რასაც მთვარის შუქზე ვხედავდი.ამ კაცში თავისებური ვნება, სითბო და რაღაც ძალიან ნაცნობი მიზიდავდა.გვერდულად ვიწექით ორივე და ერთმანეთის სუნთქვას ვგრძნობდით.მაშინვე გიცანი, რეალობაში ბევრად უკეთესი ხარ-მითხრა ჩურჩულით და თავისი ჭიქის მარწყვი ტუჩებზე ნაზად მომატარა.ალბათ ფოტოს გულისმობ? ვკითხე და ტუჩები გავილოკე.თავი ოდნავ დამიქნია და ხელი ისევ ჩემს ფეხზე ამოაცურა.თეძოზე ჩამასო თითები და დუნდულებს მიწვდა.ძლიერად და ვნებით მოსრსისა.შემდეგ ჩემს ფეხს ადგილი შეუცვალა თავისაზე გადაიდო.ხელის ზურგით გადადებული ფეხის შიდა ნაწილს ამოყვა.იგრძნო რომ ჩემი სუნთქვა სიჩქარეს კრეფდა და მე არ ვეწინააღმდეგებოდი.მაქმანებიანი შავი ტრუსები ფაქიზად გადაწია.მისი თითები რბილ, კრიალა ბაგეებში და ცოდაოდენ სისველეში მოხვდა. ნაზად გაიკვალა გზა და უსასრლუობაში შეცურდა.რიტმული ბიძგებისას თითქოს მთვარემ დაიმორცხვა და ღრუბლებს ამოეფარა.ქვემოდან წამოსულმა ტალღებმა მის ტუჩებზე მიმანარცხა მთელი ვნებით.მეორე ფეხზე გამაგრებულ და ცხელ ასოს ვგრძნობდი, რომელსაც შარვალი ძლივს აკავებდა, მაგრამ ის მხოლოდ ჩემს სიამოვნებას აგრძელებდა.მოზღვავებულმა ემოციებმა დაკარგა სირცხვილის გრძნობა და რამდენჯერმე ჭრიჭინების ხმაც გადავფარე... #tamostouch - @tamostouch on Instagram
______________________________________________ Created in 1920, this wonderful German notgeld “emergency money” banknote is a 50 Pfennig from Rinteln. Rinteln is a small town in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is located on the banks of the Weser river above the Porta Westfalica. The obverse of this banknote in the background shows the city fortifications in the medieval state in the year 1646. The foreground shows Baron Münchhausen riding a flying cannonball. Münchhausen is fictional German nobleman created by the German writer Rudolf Erich Raspe in his 1785 book Baron Munchausens Narrative of his Marvellous Travels and Campaigns in Russia. The character is loosely based on a real baron, Hieronymus Karl Friedrich, Freiherr von Münchhausen. The text at the top right is a rhyme and reads: “Wer selbst sich hilft in höchster not, den kriegt die ganze welt nicht tot”. The rough translation would be: “Who can save himself in dire need, to kill him the whole world can’t succeed”. It’s a saying about strong individuals who overcome adversity on their own, being resilient to the whole world. The reverse shows an image of the archive house of Baron Münchhausen.
