EM MEIO A PANDEMIA Meses após o grande acidente com um navio graneleiro de Minério em São Luís-MA vimos ocorrer na Baía de Guanabara-RJ um acidente com a barcaça RIO PORT I que fazia o transbordo de minério, nesse caso de ferro gusa, para um navio graneleiro que estava fundeado no local. Mas por que o navio estava sendo carregado no meio da Baía de Guanabara e não no cais do porto? Há alguns anos o Porto do Rio iniciou as operações de exportação de minério de ferro gusa ao exterior, porém tal minério não é extraído do município do Rio de Janeiro e o Porto do Rio muito menos estava preparado. Foi feito investimento para armazenagem no cais, próximo onde hoje fica a Roda Gigante, para o trem vindo de Conselheiro Lafaiete-MG descarregar seu minério no porto. A operação de transferência de minério começa no Porto do Rio com o navio atracado no cais, porém conforme o navio é carregado (e ganha peso) é preciso desatracar pela restrição da profundidade no local pois o porto não foi projetado para esta demanda. Na fase final de carregamento do minério, falta completar os porões do navio, que ancora no meio da Baía de Guanabara onde há maior profundidade. As barcaças com o restante do minério são carregadas e fazem a transferência através de guindastes dos próprios navios NO MEIO DA BAÍA DE GUANABARA. Foi durante a última fase da operação que a barcaça RIO PORT I sofreu uma avaria em um porão naufragando na área de fundeio em minutos, sem feridos, porém com grande quantidade de combustível, 3 pás mecânicas e cerca de 6 MIL TONELADAS de ferro gusa que faltavam pra completar o carregamento do navio. Não a toa, os botos cinza da BG existiam na ordem de centenas antes dos anos dois mil e agora são menos de 40 botos resistindo nas águas. The north end of Assateague Island has been moving westward at an accelerated pace since the Ocean City jetties were constructed in 1934. But did you know that a partnership between the National Park Service, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and local government agencies known as the North End Restoration Project is in place to help slow the roll of the north end? Sediment starvation on the south side of the Ocean City inlet had more than doubled the rate of shoreline erosion along the northern 11 miles of Assateague since 1934. To mitigate impacts of the loss of natural sand transport processes, a two phase restoration plan that was initiated in 2002. In the first phase, the USACE conducted a one-time beach renourishment project that widened the Assateague beach south of the inlet. This replaced about 15% of the sand that was captured by the inlet since 1934. In 2004, the second, long-term phase of the restoration plan began. Since then, each year, twice a year in the spring and fall, a dredge vessel moves sand from the offshore shoals and from within the inlet channel itself into the nearshore area along northern Assateague Island. During the next week or so, keep an eye out for the USACE vessel CURRITUCK as it works on the north end of the island. The dredge will remove approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand from the inlet and offshore shoals and deposit it closer to the beach just south of the inlet on the Assateague side. From here, Mother Nature lends a hand by moving the sand up on to the beaches all along the shoreline. This project has successfully reduced the accelerated erosion rates to pre-inlet conditions. Keep in mind that the intent of the sand by-pass project is not to create a fixed-width beach or to stop erosion completely, but rather to mitigate the impacts of the jetties, slow the un-natural erosion rate, and allow natural coastal processes to continue within the national seashore.
