The north end of Assateague Island has been moving westward at an accelerated pace since the Ocean City jetties were constructed in 1934. But did you know that a partnership between the National Park Service, the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) and local government agencies known as the North End Restoration Project is in place to help slow the roll of the north end? Sediment starvation on the south side of the Ocean City inlet had more than doubled the rate of shoreline erosion along the northern 11 miles of Assateague since 1934. To mitigate impacts of the loss of natural sand transport processes, a two phase restoration plan that was initiated in 2002. In the first phase, the USACE conducted a one-time beach renourishment project that widened the Assateague beach south of the inlet. This replaced about 15% of the sand that was captured by the inlet since 1934. In 2004, the second, long-term phase of the restoration plan began. Since then, each year, twice a year in the spring and fall, a dredge vessel moves sand from the offshore shoals and from within the inlet channel itself into the nearshore area along northern Assateague Island. During the next week or so, keep an eye out for the USACE vessel CURRITUCK as it works on the north end of the island. The dredge will remove approximately 30,000 cubic yards of sand from the inlet and offshore shoals and deposit it closer to the beach just south of the inlet on the Assateague side. From here, Mother Nature lends a hand by moving the sand up on to the beaches all along the shoreline. This project has successfully reduced the accelerated erosion rates to pre-inlet conditions. Keep in mind that the intent of the sand by-pass project is not to create a fixed-width beach or to stop erosion completely, but rather to mitigate the impacts of the jetties, slow the un-natural erosion rate, and allow natural coastal processes to continue within the national seashore. Port container volumes in Kingston have fallen during the pandemic. The contraction still resulted in Kingston ports outperforming more than half of the other city ports in the Americas, regional shipping data shows. Cargo shipments into Kingston dipped 12 per cent year over year when measured in tonnages, while export tonnages fell 7.0 per cent between January and August, based on data released to the Financial Gleaner by the #PortAuthorityJa, PAJ. However, the change narrows to a decline of 2.7 per cent when shipments are measured in container volumes rather than tonnage. Meanwhile, other port data produced by regional UN agency ECLAC shows that Kingston still ranks as eighth largest in the region among 47 city ports. The best-performing port in the review period was San Marta in Colombia, up 32 per cent in container movements, while the worst performer was Buenaventura, also in Colombia, down 38 per cent. The ports in Kingston are comprised of Kingston Container Terminal Limited, which is operated by Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited, KFTL; and Kingston Wharves Limited, KWL. Together they handled over 850,000 containers over the first half of the year. The Port Authority expects volumes to improve over the rest of the year. “At KFTL, volumes have increased steadily since the beginning of the third quarter. Kingston Wharves Limited displayed a similar pattern with the low point recorded in June 2020 and a boost in volumes afterwards,” the agency said in response to Financial Gleaner queries. While much of the economy went dormant during the early period of the pandemic, ports remained open because they are viewed as an essential service, required to facilitate international trade and the transport of goods. “Ports utilised viable shipping connections and alternatives to meet consumer demand,” said the PAJ. Weve missed @officialmayflower desperately these last three years and were thrilled to see her under sail soon for the first time in six years.
