All the images in my upcoming book were made with a Polaroid SX-70 and expired original Polaroid Time Zero film, between 2007 and 2018. The two combos are really special to me. The camera itself is attractive, sleek, and easily portable. Time Zero’s vibrant colors, light leaks, and other happy mistakes added character which I felt best suited my approach. Because of its expiration, I would usually take a self-portrait to test whether or not the film worked before going on trips, or to document a place or a time of importance. Swipe left to see a couple of my favorite self-portraits of Wim Wenders and Andrei Tarkovsky, who also used Time Zero film. This is one of my best friends Candace @theessencephotographer . She is one of the most fabulous people living on the planet. When I first met her I looked up to her so much with her bad ass modeling skills and how she was a globe trotter. I think the first shoot we were hired together on was in Baltimore and she just got off a plane from Australia, and I thought a trip like that would be impossible for an art model. I was so wrong and naive back then! She was ten years in the game of making art at that point, she had always been so kind to me since meeting her and helping me along the way. She even let me attempt to take my first polaroids of any model ever of her ever in NYC when she was house sitting. Thank god she was so patient with me because NONE of my film came out the right way. What a horrible day to shoot blanks! These polaroids are from a trip when she stopped by my house in Tacoma WA. Luckily I had a couple more years practice with actually using film and these came out of my first studio in the old post office building. Turns out you will be able to catch her and I together in Chicago. We will be available to make all sorts of art together and Im so excited to have her by my side. Squee!! Thinking about getting an Airbnb, details will be released on that soon and we will be available for remote shoots, and or ones in person. First test of the low light capability of the Polaroid Now, plus my jury-rigged colour correction filter. So you may recall that I’ve recently been shooting an old batch of I-Type film, which is quite magenta toned. I worked out that a light green gel would counteract the magenta hue of the film, and so far it has worked very well. It was, however, hard to hand hold the coloured gel so I made a simple slip on filter using gaffer tape which does the job admirably. I’ll post more photos soon with this contraption, but this post is meant to be all about the Polaroid Now! There’s no info publicly available about the longest shutter speed on the Polaroid Now, or the EV range of the meter, so I thought some tests were in order. I disabled the flash and took this image of a well lit railway platform. When I heard the shutter click it sounded fast, and I figured I had just wasted a shot, but instead it was perfectly exposed. I didn’t check the light levels with my meter, but I’m guessing that a correct exposure had to have been at least 1s. I’m impressed! I’m a Boston resident of 20 years. I started shooting polaroid with 669 film on the 600SE in art school. It changed my life. I left instant photography in 2004 due to budget constraints.
