I may not live to see our glory, but Ill gladly join the fight.  Do you ever find, when you walk in the woods, that the questions and troubles swirling around in your head suddenly seem to crystallize? I had one of those moments recently. I was thinking about something Phoebe Robinson said: Truth be told, systemic racism most likely will not be dismantled in our lifetime. While I would like things to change so that all of my Black brothers and sisters and I can live in a better world, I know thats not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is for those who come after me wont have to experience even a 1/10th of what I have...We need folks willing to do the work even if they may never see the fruits of their labor. I was feeling discouraged because I thought I didnt have a framework for doing work that is more like a relay, where one generation passes the baton to the next, rather than getting to cross the finish line ourselves. But walking on a mountain ridge it hit me: Of course I have a framework for that. I work for the National Park Service. Our mission is about working in service of future generations. Weve made mistakes, and were constantly learning how to do better and carry on toward that goal. As a park ranger, fellowship broad and deep connects me to the conservationists who came before us and the descendants we will never meet. Doing my job today means that maybe a hundred years from now, someone else will have a moment like I did on that same ridge, because the land will be preserved and protected for them. Its inspiring to be part of something so big, beautiful, imperfect and evolving. And it reminds me that it doesnt have to be discouraging to work for racial justice, even if the progress is slow. That work connects us to ancestors like Harriet Tubman and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who now have National Park Service sites to honor them, as well as the future generations who will walk in a more just world if we keep striving for it. On this day when we commemorate the founding of the National Park Service, I hope that all of you can find moments of inspiration, and dream about the legacies you will leave for future generations. - @olympic_nps on Instagram

Harlow is your #wherearetheynow Wednesday feature!! It’s so lovely to hear pupdates on animals that have been in their forever homes for a long time, and are clearly living their best lives! Harlows family had the following to say: “7 years ago as of September 12th my family and I adopted Harlow. We first went into the SPCA over the weekend just to see the dogs and play with the cats. The moment we saw Harlow, we instantly fell in love. He had been surrendered that afternoon and we were told that we couldnt have him because his owner said he was agresive and that he should be euthanized. My father asked how much a normal dog to rescue would cost, the manager said he would be about $300. My dad gave her the money and said If this dog is adoptable, I want him. If not, consider this a donation to the SPCA. He didnt believe that Harlow was an aggressive dog, he always said that there is no such thing as a bad dog, only bad owners. A week later, Harlow had his behavioral test and turns out he was a big chicken. Later that week, we brought him home at 75 pounds... the next visit to the vet weighed him at 68 pounds (he is now 63 pounds), they thought we werent feeding him correctly... turns out we were just walking him in the woods. Now that he has entered his senior years, he has found his inner puppy. He pounces, plays with stuffies for the first time and continues to snuggle. And tells us all the stories of the day when we get home. Thank you for giving Harlow a second chance.” Harlow clearly found the perfect home! - @bvspca on Instagram

Got to go up and ski down the Hotlum glacier yesterday with an all-star crew of Shasta mountain guides. Last stop: backpacking through Glacier National Park! While the threat of bears kept me on my toes, clapping incessantly and singing whatever song came to mind from Cher to Britney Spears (because apparently, despite your natural inclination to want to hide from a bear, you are supposed to make your presence known so as not to startle it and make it angry, or hungry), this was one of my favorite parts of the trip! To hike so far out into nature with no cell service or internet, just pure evidence of life going on and doing well (quite well without humanity making a mess of things), it gets you thinking— about the mess of things, about how we all play in part in said mess no matter how “good” our intentions, about what really does and doesn’t matter. Fresh air, deep breaths, long walks, good/kind company, yummy food (even freeze dried from a bag, thank you @mtnhouse), these make for great reset buttons in a chaotic world. I was really excited to experience the North Island for the first time. I knew wherever we would end up it was going to be beautiful but what we found blew away my expectations. This island never ceases to amaze me with its endless pristine west coast wonders. (After a long drive to the northern tip of the island we took our canoe with surf boards and rubber dingy in tow down a tidal river where it took us to a the long and beautiful white sand banks that would be our home for the next three nights. I’m completely back to not even knowing what day it is 🤣 Anyone else the type of person who gets ideas and wants to execute them all at once?? Sometimes my brain just never stops, Its so hard for me to stay focused on one thing when there’s so much running through my mind. I’m still completely rebranding my photography business (which might honestly be the one that drives me insane 🙃) planning some big upcoming projects, booking weddings for next year and planning a massive life change at the end of this year which I’m so incredibly stoked about but also a little terrified to execute. Balancing everything seems impossible at times but if I’m really honest with myself, it’s in those stressful exciting moments that the magic happens. I can’t wait to see where it all leads ✨ Also, here are a few photos from fern canyon! And it was exactly that, an entire canyon trail with walls lined with ferns 🌿 The hike was easy but beautiful. Sea to Sky Gondola, Squamish, B.C. We were saddened to hear the news that someone had once again deliberately cut the gondola cables and caused massive damage to the attraction. After last year’s incident, they reopened in February after spending $5-million in repairs only to close again due to CoVid. They’ve only just re-opened in May. It’s a shame that visitors will not have the opportunity to see this beautiful place again. We’re glad, however, that no one was hurt during the incident. In the mid-1980s my mother traveled to Arizona to protest efforts against the forced relocation of Hopi and Navajo people and the leasing of new land and water resources for coal and uranium development. During this time, my mother met a smart young man who’s family lived at the epicenter of this land dispute, an area of Northern Arizona called Big Mountain, the heart of the Navajo Nation and their traditional homeland. A few years later, I came along, Scotts-Irish and Cherokee on my mother’s side, and Chiishí and Naakai Dine’é on my father’s side. Like a lot of families, mine was not always perfect. Alcoholism and addiction plagued my father, uncles, aunts and cousins. They dealt with health issues, racism, trauma, recidivism, abuse, land-based identity crisis’, and poverty, cycles that, as an adult, I understand better in historical context. There has also been great healing, breaking cycles through community support and personal triumph. Which brings me to this moment. There is so much anxiety, tension and uncertainty in the world right now that It can be tempting to let cycles of fear and exhaustion defeat us. But we must move forward. For me, this looks like engaging in advocacy work, protesting, protecting land and celebrating cultural identity like my parents did. This looks like writing, starting hard conversations, often being the only brown person in the room and at the table, relearning the Navajo language, engaging in small and large acts of resistance, sustainability work, long hikes, climbing, laughing and contributing to work that shapes a future that’s just, equitable and ecologically sustainable.” - @ibexwool on Instagram

I spent the last few days exploring Algonquin Provincial Park 🌿 Before Europeans arrived in Canada, the Algonquian First Nations lived in this region for nearly 9000 years. This park was established in 1893 with the goal of creating a sanctuary for wildlife. Its not uncommon to encounter deer, moose, and bears in Algonquin. And at night youll hear the wolves calling out to each other! Algonquin is about a 3.5 hour drive from Toronto, making it the perfect place to escape to for a couple days. This year its almost entirely local Canadians visiting, but normally, international tourists come to explore this wilderness as well. With the pandemic still active globally, I want to add that travel of any kind includes some risk - both to you, and to the communities that you visit. We opted for wilderness camping because we were able to minimize human interaction along the way (which minimizes risk). Our car was well stocked with disinfectant spray for all of our stops for gas, and we always wore masks when encountering others. ** see my stories for more info & resources re: safety while roadtripping/camping during corona** It was a rainy few days, but we braved the weather to get in some scenic hiking and relaxing swimming. I have always been proud to hold the title of Nurse, but with today’s current events I am even more so. 2020 was declared 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙔𝙚𝙖𝙧 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙪𝙧𝙨𝙚 before COVID-19 was even on the map. I honestly believe if COVID-19 never happened, the “year of the nurse” wouldn’t mean anything to anyone except nurses. It has taken this tragic pandemic for people to recognize how important we are. Recognition is nice, but we’ve done this for years without it. And we will continue to do it far after this pandemic is over and people forget. We go to work every day spending 12+ hours caring for you and your loved ones. We deal with assault and abuse. We deal with rude and ungrateful family members. We deal with rude and ungrateful patients. In many areas of the country we do this with insufficient staff/equipment and policies that dont protect us. We work for huge corporations that see us as just a number. We are expected to be hospitality workers and customer service driven. Many times we aren’t treated like educated professionals in a science driven field who’s skills and expertise are ESSENTIAL. But a pizza party fixes everything right?—I digress. I write all this to say this... 𝗧𝗛𝗔𝗡𝗞 𝗬𝗢𝗨. Thank you for continuing to put your scrubs on and show up. Thank you for taking care of my loved ones. First mini bike packing trip included carrying all my mountain gear via bike up to the bunny flats trailhead, unpacking it and hauling it up a mountain. We met a couple in a parking lot the night before @vanlife.sagas ...that’s #Vanlife for real. 😂⠀ ⠀ 🌸They recommended this beautiful place and we ended up spending the whole day here. I always try to advise friends and relatives (and myself), to leave the chaos and hectic world and find solitude somewhere off the grid (even a nice beach) and take a stroll, listen to the ocean around you, the trees, the animals, the rain, the waterfalls, the river, the lake, listen to the life around you, bask in it and take time to reflect and collect at least once out the week. I guarantee when you head back into the real world, your self awareness and awareness of others around you will magnify! and then in that moment you will learn to appreciate the world and people around you even more! Planning a backpacking trip along the Olympic Wilderness Coast? The Olympic Wilderness Coast is a beautiful and rugged landscape with much to explore, but because of its uniqueness requires special planning before heading out. The terrain along the coast is variable and a number of conditions under foot will be encountered including but not limited to - fine sand beaches, pebbly/rocky beaches, slippery moss/algae covered boulders, driftwood logs, rocky headlands, rope & ladder assisted overland trails, forested and brushy overland trails and sections of well-maintained trails. Overland trails aid hikers in navigating sections of the coast that are not feasible or safe to hike at shore level. Certain sections of coastal routes are only passable at mid-to-low tides; these sections should be identified and planned out prior to any trip. For example, the Diamond Rock tidal restrictions approximately 1.5 miles north of Oil City are the most challenging tide restrictions along the whole coast. This is due to the fact that there needs to be a tide lower than 2’ to pass by safely, there is no overland route and during certain tidal cycles this tidal restriction will not be passable for consecutive days on end. Definitely #knowbeforeyougo ! ✅ Be sure to have an accurate map that shows where the overland trails and tide restrictions are and at what height. ✅ Be sure to consult and bring a tide chart with you so you know the high and low tides of the day (ONP uses NOAAs tidal charts based off of Destruction Island) ✅ Plan out your hiking distances and approximate hiking times so that you are able to pass through tidal restrictions ✅ Bear canisters are required for any overnight backpacking along the coast and are available for pickup at the Port Angeles, Quinault and Hoodsport Wilderness Information Centers Need helping planning your Olympic Wilderness Coast trip?
