Andromeda - Our Galactic Neighbour ! Andromeda a.k.a M31, NGC 224 is the nearest Major Galaxy to our Milkyway, located at a distance of 250 million Light-years ( thats just ~2,365,182,600,000,000,000,000 km ;) ). Its also the farthest object that can be seen with naked eyes from Earth. Apart from the Galaxys Core, its Dust Lane and Satellite Galaxies M32 & M110 are prominent in the image. Oh, I forgot to tell you. Andromeda is on a collision course with our Milkyway, currently approaching at a speed of 110kmps, but dont worry, we have got 4 billion years to figure out a way. This is the last week to see Masayuki Shioda’s “Retinagazer” at Taka Ishii Gallery Photography / Film. Shioda has also produced “Retinagazer”, a book composed of previous works and based on the same concept as this exhibition. Through the process of making this book, the artist confronted his own works to trace his transformations throughout the years and make new discoveries in previously shot images. In “JIKAN” (2012), included in this show, he has shot a night sky with lens flare. The stars, which are far from us in physical and temporal distance, and the flare, a trace of the lens, come together in one image to create a new space. Transcending space and time, the artist revitalizes essential elements of photography through his consciousness to link them to the contemporary period. This exhibition will explore the compounded and evolving relations between the spaces of the individual works and their development and expansion as well as reciprocal effects in the exhibition space. Masayuki Shioda Retinagazer is on view through Sep 26. By appointment only, please make your reservation via contact form on our website. Image: Masayuki Shioda, “JIKAN”, 2012 / 2020, C-print © Masayuki Shioda #masayukishioda #takaishiigallery #takaishiigalleryphotography #takaishiigalleryphotographyfilm - @takaishiigallery on Instagram

The Leo Triplet (M66 Group) 🦁 15/04/20. Social distancing clearly doesn’t apply in outer space! The Leo Triplet consists of three galaxies (M65, M66 and NGC 3628) grouped close together approximately 35 million light-years away! All three members of the Leo Triplet are spiral galaxies - however from Earth we see each from a different angle. The beautiful spiral structure of M65 and M66 (right) is visible, however we see NGC 3638 (left) edge on. In this image you can make out the dust band that obscures the bright core of the latter. I find galaxies amongst the most difficult objects in the night sky to capture because they are so severely impacted by light pollution. I am super pleased with this shot however! The total exposure time of this image is just over 1.5 hours (30sec subs) + dark frames. No light pollution filter was used, following the advice of @astrophotoross - thanks Ross, I think you’re right! Skywatcher Esprit 80ED; Canon 750Da; Altair GP290c; HEQ5. This is a reprocess of the data I used for my previous m31 version. The original (second image) one was too saturated and the white balance was off, way too much red. . . . The seven Pleiades sisters with their parents, the titan Atlas, condemned to sustain the Earth and the sea nymph Pleyone, bring us like homing pigeons the arrival of summer in the southern hemisphere and winter in the northern one. Visible to the naked eye is undoubtedly the most beautiful open star cluster in the night sky and this is why the Greeks gave them a great importance in their Mythology . . M81 & M82 (Swipe to see the full image) Messier 81, Bode’s Galaxy, and Messier 82, the Cigar Galaxy. These two galaxies are both about 12 million light years away and can be spotted with a small telescope near Ursa Major. M81 is about 90,000 light years in diameter and M82 is around 37,000 light years wide. M82 is a starburst galaxy, producing thousands of new stars every year. M81 & M82 are some of my favorite galaxies to image, and I use them as a progress indicator of how far I’ve advanced in the past year with my astro imaging and processing. I thought I might be able to pull out some of the faint IFN (integrated flux nebula) that surrounds these galaxies, but I need more integration time for that. Trifid Nebula by @astrogirl.au 🤩 Kat Miller says: I took this on the 23.08 during my scopes maiden voyage. Not a lot of data recorded as I was just happy to finally have it aligned and was exploring mostly. I definitely want to return to this interesting night sky jewel.. Info: The Trifid Nebula is an H II region located in Sagittarius. It was discovered by Charles Messier on June 5, 1764. Its name means divided into three lobes. The object is an unusual combination of an open cluster of stars; an emission nebula, a reflection nebula and a dark nebula. . 🔵 Up and Over • ▶️ Every now and then, the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope glimpses a common object — say, a spiral galaxy — in an interesting or unusual way. A sharply angled perspective, such as the one shown in this Picture of the Week, can make it seem as if we, the viewers, are craning our necks to see over a barrier into the galaxys bright centre. . ▶️ In the case of NGC 3169, this barrier is the thick dust embedded within the galaxys spiral arms. Cosmic dust comprises a potpourri of particles, including water ice, hydrocarbons, silicates, and other solid material. It has many origins and sources, from the leftovers of star and planet formation to molecules modified over millions of years by interactions with starlight. . ▶️ NGC 3169 is located about 70 million light-years away in the constellation of Sextans. It is part of the Leo I Group of galaxies, which, like the Local Group that houses our home galaxy, the Milky Way, is part of a larger galactic congregation known as the Virgo Supercluster. ••• Credit: ESA/Hubble & NASA, L. Andromeda aka M31, our nearest galactic neighbor at a mere 2.5 million light years away. Above it, M110 a dwarf, satellite galaxy of Andromeda. If you swipe you’ll see a less cropped version of my image that actually shows two other galaxies! Look to the upper left corner for two little pinkish smudges stacked on one another; C17 and C18 both dwarf spheroidal galaxies 2.58 and 2.08 mil LY away. Pretty neat. If I’m not mistaken Andromeda is the farthest thing from Earth that we can see with our naked eye. . Two weeks ago I knew nothing about what astrophotography really was or meant. I knew I loved the sky and space and everything it had to offer. I knew that every opportunity I had to shoot the night sky and/or the Milky Way I’d gladly take. I knew how to use a DSLR. Everything else that lead me to this photo I sought out and with the aid of the internet, taught myself. 🥵 Needles to say, I’m deeply inspired and kind of sleepy. . I know compared to “real” deep space Astro photos this is not much but I’m pretty proud of it (if you know me you know it takes a lot for me to admit any sort of pride ever 😂). Accomplishing this image took a lot of work, time, research, and trial and error. I still cannot believe my camera and 85mm lens are capable of such a result! . I have to give two big huge shout outs to Nico @nebulaphotosdotcom and Aaron @a.v.astronomy for making some really wonderful videos that a newb like me found incredibly helpful! Stepping into this world is INTIMIDATING. I foolishly thought since I have more than 15 years photography experience under my belt I’d have a leg up... I was wrong. This is another world. A whole other language. This is science and math and so much more. I’m hooked. . This image is the result of combining more than 600 signal frames shot at 2 sec each. All the frames are registered and stacked on the computer and then put together to form one singular file. After that it was post processed using good old photoshop. . Hubble Spies Sparkling Galaxy As beautiful as the surrounding space may be, the sparkling galaxy in the foreground of this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope undeniably steals the show. This spotlight-hogging galaxy, seen set against a backdrop of more distant galaxies of all shapes and sizes, is known as PGC 29388. Although it dominates in this image, this galaxy is a small player on the cosmic stage and is known as a dwarf elliptical galaxy. As the dwarf moniker suggests, the galaxy is on the smaller side, and boasts a mere 100 million to a few billion stars — a very small number indeed when compared to the Milky Ways population of around 250 billion to 400 billion stellar residents.
