A morning visit on September 8 and an evening visit on September 10 found the whole loon family fishing together with no intruders. Both parents would dive for fish and the chicks would also dive. When they surfaced, at least one of the chicks would beg for food from the nearest adult. Chicks beg by rubbing their heads and necks on the parents head and neck, and also by poking or nibbling the parents neck with their bill. The chicks also make loud wheezy noises, and these begging behaviors are usually annoying enough to make the parent dive again to try to feed the chicks. Although the chicks are still begging for fish and being fed by their parents, they are now over three months old and should be able to feed themselves and fly. Do not be surprised if one or both parents depart the pond for the winter soon, leaving the chicks to fend for themselves. The female has not started molting much yet, but the father loon is growing in winter plumage, white feathers around the base of his beak and also molting some back feathers where you can see missing spots. His beak is turning gray at the base, and it will turn all gray just like the chicks beak by winter. His legs and feet will also turn from black to gray. Loons molt at different rates, but most are starting now. You may find loon feathers floating on the water or washed up on shore. Fortunately, loons do not molt their flight feathers until later in the winter, after they have reached their wintering areas, usually on the ocean. The early autumn weather with cooling temperatures might nudge loons and other birds south a bit early this year. Yes, true story! The male platypus has a calcaneus, sharp spur about 12 millimetres long on each ankle which is used to deliver venom. World Rivers Day is a global celebration of the worlds waterways. In Zambia, rivers are lifelines for both human and animal communities—particularly in the face of climate change. People have long relied on rivers for clean drinking water and fresh fish. Wildlife relies on water in such a severely seasonal environment, and the ability of rivers to freely flow and flood each rains brings rich soils and nutrients for plants and crops. Today we pause to reflect on ways we can improve stewardship of rivers in Zambia to ensure that animals and people have access to clean and flowing rivers. Across Zambia we work with the DNPW, @wwfzambia and partners to help conserve and restore watersheds for people and wildlife. Whether its providing the science on potential impacts of damming the Luangwa, or planning for the impacts of climate change in the Upper Zambezi, we’re working together to protect these vital parts of Zambia’s natural heritage. In the words of the great conservationist, Aldo Leopold: A river or stream is a cycle of energy from sun to plants to insects to fish. It is a continuum broken only by humans. COMPORTAMIENTOS Ya son varios años que me dedico a la fotografía de vida silvestre y si algo he querido impregnar en mi trabajo es mi deseo insaciable de enseñar, de compartir, de que mis fotografías no solo sean un “animal bonito” y ya. Siempre quiero que cuando una persona vea una de mis fotografías, se detenga, piense y reflexione. Que estaban haciendo estos animales, como se comportan, que cosas pasan en la naturaleza mientras que yo vivo mi vida. Es así como la fotografía se convierte en una herramienta de conservación. Esto que están viendo son exactamente la misma especie y hasta son machos los dos, pero uno apenas acaba de empezar a aprender de la vida mientras que el otro ya es un veterano. Este comportamiento es usual en los pájaros campana, hay un video en este mismo Instagram IGTV que muestra esto, hay quienes atribuyen esto a una pelea de territorio, pero un joven con “barbas” tan pequeñas no creo se atreva a pelear esta percha. Más bien me parece que el adulto le enseña cómo debe hacer el canto. El cual para el pájaro campana macho es VITAL. Le da acceso a las mejores perchas, comida y hembras. ¿Que piensas vos que sea? Team Update 🍂 As we slowly but steadily march into Autumn, were getting into the rhythm of the new normal. 🍂 This week our Rangers are working across Higher Moors SSSI, with a focus on Fen Restoration. This is hugely important work which results in keeping our wetlands wet and protecting/enhancing our precious water supply. As well as managing succession (effectively preventing the movement from Wetland to Woodland) the work also enhances and encourages biodiversity and creates a healthier more robust water catchment area; benefitting nature but people too. 🍂 Following on from this well also be restarting our Seal Surveys after a break of a few months as a result of Covid. The Team are really excited to be getting out on the water again to see how our Atlantic Grey Seals are doing. Chinstrap penguin 🐧 . Interesting and sad Time article came out a couple days ago shedding light on the drastic decline of the Chinstraps along the Antarctic Peninsula. Over 70% decline in populations in some colonies that were last studied 50 years ago. . Article - https://time.com/5781302/climate-change-is-decimating-the-chinstrap-penguins-of-antarctica/ . It’s quite a coincidence(or not at all) that this comes out the week the highest temperature on record was set(18.3C!) nearby where these studies took place. . Having worked down there for 7 seasons, I can say without a shadow of doubt that this season was warmer than any I have experienced prior. Major melt in areas I’d never noticed before. Toco the Toucan looks so elegant in his dark plumage 🖤 but I know... working with black yarn is tough 🤯 but there are always creative options: 😎 use a dark color but less fiddly to work with - like a deep blue or purple 🌈 get carried away by all the rainbow colors and choose a pastel/fluo/bright color… apparently all of them suit to toucans - stylish touch: matching safety eyes! 🧠 clever idea: a variegated or melange black yarn like Scheepjes Stone Washed (I used it for Ugo the cat, super recommended!). It’s indisputably black, but definitely easier to use without a miner’s flashlight. . L’oiseau de la semaine : le canard siffleur Ce magnifique canard nous vient directement des pays nordiques. En migration, il peut être observé sur nos lacs et cours d’eau jusqu’à fin mars. Son sifflement interpelant lui a valu son nom. Il ne se nourrit pas que de plantes aquatiques ; c’est également un brouteur d’herbes qui se trouvent à proximité des cours d’eau. Actuellement en pleine mue, ce canard nous révèlera toute la beauté de son plumage nuptial au cours des prochaines semaines. Certains spécimens sont déjà parés de leurs couleurs finement exotiques afin de séduire leurs belles. Même si les femelles sont moins chatoyantes, ce canard vaut vraiment le coup d’être repéré !
