When Salinas residents Berenice Magana and siblings Markus and Emely Zavala found the community garden in Natividad Creek Park, weeds almost entirely obscured the chain-link fence. The soil was dry and whatever plants that once thrived there were now starved out by dead grass. “When we found out about the garden, I thought, wow we live in such a fertile place, but it’s just so sad here and it was meant for the community,” Emely says. It was sad, that tangle of untamed nature. But instead of abandoning the garden and allowing it to further fallow, they saw its potential. “We saw the garden and realized it needed some love – it was just sitting there,” Magana says. So give it love they did, beginning in June. It took two weeks – one week planning, another doing labor – to uncover and revive the community garden. Ive been pretty quiet here (and really I post here for me as a kind of journal). As part of my #mentalhealthmonday I figured I would share some of whats going on at the farm. As you know last weekend we suffered a serious heat wave and it was damaging to the farm. It also killed all the @sandiegoseedcompany #pumpkins I had planted at my house for some neighborhood enjoyment (and they were doing great). This is why I never get excited about the avocado crop until we are putting fruit into the bins. All it takes is a bad day to wipe out a years worth of work. I am still assessing the extent of the damage as it will take several weeks for it to be fully understood. Now, as bad as it looks here there are a lot of positives (yes, I will share more) and its not all bad news. The greatest positive though is the community of farmers and how supportive everyone is. I had someone make a comment to me along the lines of I bet youre happy that your farm doesnt look as bad as your neighbors. No, Im absolutely not happy, I would be happy if neither of our farms had any damage. I dont think anything was meant by it, but that was my response. Im hopeful that all my fellow farmers can survive the damage. I hope we can all be supportive of each other and share our techniques for getting through this. I will be... I truly cherish being part of a community the supports each other and does their best to lift each other up. To all my fellow avocado farmers, THANK YOU! Hey everyone! I know we’ve been kind of inactive but alas, such is life 🙃 Slowly but surely we’ll make it back to our previous posting frequency. 🌱 Pictured is a bell pepper that I’ve been growing back in the garden bed. Honestly I’ve had some problems with the bed itself kind of stunting the plant’s growth because of the classic beginner mistake of going cheap with the soil. I think it’s lacking some essential nutrients so what I’ve been doing to amend the soil is adding some composted cow manure and used coffee grains to bring some nutrients into the soil every few days. The good thing is that it seems like it’s working!! Hopefully we’ll see much more growth now that they have better soil! 🌱 It hurt a little when I realized the initial mistake and it was too late to go back on it but I think it’s important, especially in gardening, to learn from your past seasons! Obviously it’s always best to try to AVOID this mistakes by researching more in the beginning, but I’m of the philosophy that if you get TOO focused on researching, you can fall into a deep case of analysis paralysis. And in a flash its all over. Last night was the final episode of Grow Your Own at Home with Alan Titchmarsh. It filled our screens at a time when we had time on our hands to make our own environments more pleasurable and bountiful (or in our case dream!!). Alan Titchmarsh, @daviddomoney, @thequeenofspades00 and @francestophill – transformed their gardens and revealed their individual make-overs. Alan planted an apricot tree (yes really) and added a beautiful final border of bee attracting flowers to keep his veg patch pollinated and prettify the whole area.🐝 🐝 🐝 Frances’ garden was revealed. Her tiny bare courtyard was transformed into a cosy kitchen-garden sanctuary. Her finishing touch was a couple of veg-filled hanging baskets, packed with colourful plants and a bean growing up the fig (there really is no area untouched). We love this garden not least because it shows that big ideas can still happen in a small space but also as it is so pretty. The walls painted in our Royal Exterior Warm Clay are the perfect backdrop and the table for two painted in Saffron added a pop of colour. In Yorkshire, Katie added more pickable salad veg and scented herbs around her seating area. In the Midlands, David was planting giant veg. Watch out ...they looked like something out of Roald Dahls James and the giant peach!! If you missed it- it is definitely worth watching it on catch up as packed with tips for growing your own. This hotoke/winter weve been collecting fallen leaves from the local park to turn into leaf mould. We’ll let them sit overwinter in a slow process of decomposition that will provide us with black gold to use in our seed raising mix/on beds. By utilising the abundance of natural resources that Papatūānuku provides, were practising our Hua Parakore principles. If you think about the whakapapa of the leaves, they come from the nga Tamariki o Tane/trees that surround us, with established roots that absorb many nutrients from deep in the soil. As leaf mould, it will nourish our crops and make them full of vitality, hauora/health as well as helping store carbon in the soil which will improve its ability to store water. The story of four crops in one bed: A #notill idea we’ve been exploring in-depth this year is relay cropping (AKA #everbed farming). The idea here is that one crop is planted into another crop before the preceding crop is fully removed from a bed in an effort to maximize photosynthesis. This idea still needs a ton of fleshing out (a TON ton), but this particular bed a couple others showed some potential. In March this bed was seeded to radishes. In April it was interplanted with Zucchini. In May, after the radishes were fully removed but before the bed was fully occupied by the zukes, green onions we’re sown beneath. The Zucchini was great––10 weeks or more of harvest in the field no cover. Zucchini was then removed, some alfalfa meal, humic acid, kelp, and compost was applied, then Napa cabbage was planted this week. Obviously, what works one year does not illustrate what will work every year or everywhere, but I was obviously pretty pumped about this one. Thoughts? The project aims to, through demonstration plots,training seminars and workshops educate and empower farners on how farming practices impact the ocean . The farmers are taught alternate methods of cultivation that are not only more sustainable but also offer higher yield. They are also given fruit and timber trees to replant deforested areas with plants that they are more likely to maintain and that can contribute to income generation. (Following on from previous post) Frost sprinklers doing their thing on The Food Farm fruit trees. When ice melts it creates an exothermic reaction. One of the by-products is latent heat. This heat continually melts the ice, so if you keep applying water in controlled rates ice will keep forming on the outside but it will be water within which will protect the bud or blossom from frost & ice (see 2nd pic). These sprinklers apply 4mm an hour in a fine mist, but if the water stops for any reason it all freezes and its game over for the whole season. Its a lot of water but weve had a relatively dry winter so as long as we dont have to do this too often it will be ok. As the season warms up were less likely to get frosts beyond ground level and the fruit has more resilience as it gets bigger. Not my favourite time or year because of broken sleep and concern that one cold night can ruin everything for a season, but the beauty of this makes it more bearable. Farmers have not been the exception with covid pandemic and climate hazards this season. Cobrir o solo é uma prática importante na agricultura de processos. Cria o habitat dos verdadeiros engenheiros do ecossistema (minhocas, formigas, cupins, lagartos e outros) e permite uma atividade intensa dessa vida no solo, responsável por trazer naturalmente a fertilidade. Assim como uma floresta nativa, onde existe uma camada grossa de serrapilheira e inúmeros animais trabalhando no sistema. Com o tempo a decomposicao da biomassa vai transformar a terra. São processos de enriquecimento do ambiente, ou seja, um passo maior que apenas a sustentabilidade. Nos caminhos entre esses canteiros, coloquei trocos da mangueira velha que foi podada, e por cima uma silagem que já não serve mais pras vacas. Além de acelerar a decomposição da madeira o silo facilita o caminhar sobre os troncos. A matéria orgânica abundante nos caminhos chega a alcançar o nível mais alto dos canteiros, as vezes fica até superior. Ajudando a manter firme as bordas dos canteiros, e evitando a perda de água do solo, mantendo sempre úmido. Mas João, seu doido! Esses bichos não vão devorar seu plantio? A resposta é não. Justamente por que não quero eliminar eles do sistema. Pelo contrário, estou fornecendo o que eles precisam pra não precisarem atacar as plantas e prejudicar minhas colheitas! Eles entendem que sou amigo deles e nunca me deram prejuízo. Assim não preciso comprar defensivos, agrotóxicos, nada de adubo químico. Sou livre do pacote industrial e do modelo de agronegócio que nosso país incentiva.
