Bottle Logic (CA) Reaction State. . Imperial Stout aged in Maple Syrup and Cinnamon Whiskey Bourbon Barrels with Cacao Nibs, really nice Coffee, Lactose, Vietnamese Cinnamon, and Madagascar Vanilla at 12% ABV. Soft maple and oak on the nose. Earthy coffee on the tongue, with a slightly spicy cinnamon and faintly sweet maple finish. Hallets Cider I really wasn’t expecting this cider to be so dark, it tastes how it looks, full bodied and rich in flavour. The Can 5/10 The review everyone wanted but no one needs. It’s just not same is it. To be fair, I’ve had a fair few of them since the pubs closed and the taste is remarkably consistent. When poured right, they also definitely look the part. But the fact of the matter is, what you see and what you get are two different things. Having consumed some of the finest Guinness Ireland has to offer, your taste buds have trouble readjusting. Granted over time, I’ve come to really enjoy them, and they’ve become an institution for many during the struggles of the past month or so. There is, though, a softness to their texture and taste, putting them into the weaker category of cream when compared to their counterparts who are fortunate enough to be poured from a keg close to the tap. A commendable substitute for the real deal, but in the interest of the rating and in comparison to the real thing it’s a five out of ten. Coming from a can, not as bad a showing as some might have you believe. Time gentle-people, please! Yeah, we’re a toy shop, and that in itself is something pretty rare and special these days. But, we know there’s a lot of competition from other (virtual) places that sell toys, so we’ve made hospitality a key part of our experience here. You’ve been invited to have a coffee, tea, beer, and more, while the kids play in our Little Nest play area, or at one of our games nights. Running a hospitality business within a retail business is like having two kids - lots of things can be shared, but the one’s that can’t take a lot of extra energy. We were rolling out our full hospitality offering just as Lockdown No. 1 took hold in March. The last few weeks we’ve been launching it again: weekly games nights, coffee service featuring Curved Brick coffees, new kegs from Pillars and Solvay, we re-stocked several cases of wine, and etc… Now, this week, ‘hospitality’ has been severely threatened by a morass of complex and prohibitive rules. As a hybrid business, we simply can’t give the extra energy and conceits that the undemocratically imposed regulations demand. For example, table service? We rely on seating around the bar. 10pm curfew? Games nights can’t start until 7.30, it’s no fun rushing through a great game, and that’s not the experience we’re here to offer. And, we absolutely refuse to participate and enable increased Government surveillance by making our guests ‘track and trace’ via a very questionable ‘app’. So, it’s last orders, again, for our hospitality offerings. We’ll re-open them as soon as we get regulatory approval. Until then, please help us deal with excess beer stock: bring in an empty container, and we’ll fill it from one of our kegs for a ‘pay what you can’ price. We’ll also sell any bottle of wine from our list for 30% off the list price. Of course, we still have loads of games and toys to demonstrate and play with. They haven’t taken that part of our hospitality away! We believe in democracy. We’ll be closed tomorrow to join a peaceful protest against extending the Coronavirus act.
