We were planning to open registration today for our two part Cultivating Resilience Workshop, which was to take place in April. With so much unknown and in flux in the coming weeks, and in the interest of public health, we are postponing these events and wont open registration until we have more information. We at @thebeeslc as well as the folks at the @raperecoverycenter and @utahhumanities want to reassure you that we remain fully dedicated to staying engaged in this work with you. In the meantime, we feel strongly that cultivating our crucial capacity to respond and recover from trauma, adversity, and stress, which is one way of describing resilience, is as important now as ever. With this in mind, were going to see what we can do to re-imagine this offering, among other things we do, into something we can do with you online - stay tuned! Celebrate the 19th Amendment with us & the women Who Saved the Redwoods? Todays highlight- Martha Cook McClellan of Eureka, Calif. and her daughters Gertrude and Jeanette left a lasting mark in California redwoods history as the first residents of Humboldt County to donate a large portion of their family-owned redwood forests for parks. Martha McClellan, who rode a wagon train to California in the 1850s, gifted 160 acres of old-growth redwoods to the public in 1919 with intentions to make it the nucleus of the new Redwood National Park then envisioned for the region. As federal park efforts faltered until 1968, her land soon became part of Humboldt Redwoods State Park, now a section of the Garden Club of America. McClellan’s gift 101 years ago still marks a historic first in the Northern California redwoods, the opening act in the survival of 89,000 acres of old-growth redwood forests in Humboldt and Del Norte counties. August 17, 2020, the Walbridge, Stewarts, and Meyers fires ignited in northwest Sonoma County. Our hearts go out to our community members who have lost their homes or have been displaced by the fires. Many of our protected lands have been affected by fire in the last few years, and this year is no different. As we wait for the incredible firefighters and first responders to fully contain these fires, we are busy prepping to support landowners and the county at-large in recovery. The lands we protect provide local food, clean drinking water, increased biodiversity, and natural beauty everyday. During wildfires, floods, and other extreme events, our working and natural lands provide additional support as buffers around our communities. As always, we are committed to continuing to manage our lands to ensure ecosystem health that helps reduce the risk and intensity of wildfires, and we work with easement landowners to support them in doing the same. Thankfully, our lands will also be there to provide a place where we can all feel calm and restored in the days and weeks ahead. This has been a bad few days for invasive forest pests in the Adirondacks! Last week, the region’s second known infestation of Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA) was identified at the Glen Island Campground on the shores of Lake George. Thanks to the swift work of a dedicated citizen scientist camping on site, this sighting rapidly alerted @nysdec Foresters when the camper reported a suspicious hemlock tree using @nyimapinvasives Community volunteers are integral to preserving Adirondack habitat quality – from helping prevent the spread of invasive species in the first place, to being on the lookout for target species when on the trail or paddling a lake. Check APIPP’s past Identification and Survey Trainings help ID and report invasive species using @nyimapinvasives (link in bio) HWA is a tiny insect that first arrived in New York in 1985. Best identified by its characteristic white, fuzzy secretions that protect offspring, adult HWA lay eggs on the underside of young hemlocks branches and, when eggs hatch, larvae feed on leaves. This feasting behavior causes needles to brown out and drop prematurely, leading to a cascade of tree decline. With missing leaves, hemlocks cannot photosynthesize at the same rate to create energy needed to carry out basic survival (let alone fight off infections). Within 4 to 10 years, an infested Hemlock can die completely. HWA has already been identified in 46 other counties in New York, primarily in the lower Hudson Valley and the Finger Lakes region with considerable forest loss throughout the southern Catskill Mountains – not to mention surrounding states and Appalachian Mountain Chain. Eastern hemlocks are a long-lived conifer that makes up about 10 percent of Adirondack forests and are some of the oldest trees in New York State with some reaching ages of more than 700 year old! I took a quick trip up to Michigan last weekend and decided to hit a few cool places on the way home. This is called “The Spot” at Oak Openings Preserve just outside of Toledo. While the park is called Oak Openings because of all the oak trees, The Spot is unique because it’s a densely planted mini forest of super tall red pines. Red pines are not native to the area, and these ones were planted to slow the erosion of the surrounding sand dunes. I love The Spot because it makes me feel like a kid playing in the woods and it’s pretty much impossible not to get sweet shots. Last week was my birthday, and even though I hoped not to have a “Covid birthday” in late August, here we are. 😊 10 days in Big Canoe (north Georgia) was just what we needed. We spent the days hiking, fishing, swimming (none for me, please 😝), making bowls and pinch pots from the natural clay from the bank of lake Petit, sliding on a natural rock slide, and finishing off our forest study with hands on learning of the topics we have been studying all month. I took a day trip to Sequoia National Forest! It was magical and too much for pictures but here we go. Pics 1 and 2 are the Chief Sequoyah tree. Pic 3 is a picture of me in front of the General Sherman, the largest tree on earth by mass. Im standing really far in front of it so the scale definitely doesnt do it justice. Pic 4 is me just about crying. It was snowing and I was pretty much alone in that part of the forest, so i took the opportunity to tuck into a nook inside the Chief Sequoyah. I cant remember when Ive felt so small, so safely held, and so perfectly at home. Somehow that 3000 year old tree gave me some of the love I needed. Pic 5 is my view from the tree. Pic 6 is Bernard and Sarah from London. He was having a powerful moment so I asked him about it, and he teared up telling me about being a boy and seeing pictures of these trees in a book. And here he was finally getting to see them in person. | 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗞𝗶𝘀𝘀 After nearly a week of trying to stay one step ahead of showers and storms rolling across southwest Colorado, the sun finally made an appearance. A day of exploring forest service roads and capturing scenes capped by dramatic white clouds framed by intense blue sky was capped off with this parting kiss of warm sunlight on these aspens standing in the midst of pines that had already fallen further into shadow. My third year participating in the Shannon Cattle drive. This is the 103rd year the family has moved 450 head 50 miles from the low foothills to the Sequoia National Forest backcountry. I’m forever grateful to the Shannon family for letting me experience this amazing tradition. I’m very grateful to my friend Shelley Chico for lending me one of her excellent ranch ponies. Gilligan was the ultimate mount, trustworthy, willing, with tremendous stamina, athleticism, and beauty.
