- At a 1915 auction, a millionaire named Cecil Chubb bought Stonehenge as a gift for his wife, but she hated it because she had sent him to buy a set of dining chairs. 3 years later, he decided it belonged to the English, so he gave it to his country on the conditions that entry is free for locals.

Happy Birthday, William Faulkner! The man, the myth, the legend was born on this day in 1897 in New Albany, Mississippi. Shortly before his fifth birthday, the Falkner family relocated to Oxford, where he stayed for much of his life. The Nobel Prize-winning author is best known for his novels that took place in fictional Yoknapatawpha County, which was modeled after Lafayette County, Mississippi. While his home in Oxford, Rowan Oak, is currently closed to the public, the grounds and nearby Bailey Woods Trail are open from dawn until dusk daily. #williamfaulkner #rowanoak #oxfordms #olemiss #onthisday #happybirthday #hbd @visitoxfordms @cityofoxfordms @olemiss - @ummuseum on Instagram

Starting Thursday, June 18th at 7pm, for 24 hours Late Capital presents three videos by Suneil Sanzgiri, At the Top of Grasshoppers Hill (2016-17) The Reunion (2019) and AT HOME BUT NOT AT HOME (2019). The screening is freely accessible, though a link will be provided to make a $5 suggested donation to Brave Space Alliance. Brave Space Alliance is the first Black-led, trans-led LGBTQ Center located on the South Side of Chicago, dedicated to creating and providing affirming, culturally competent, for-us by-us resources, programming, and services for LGBTQ individuals on the South and West sides of the city. PROGRAM INFO: total program length ~40 minutes, at flatland.online as well as twitch.tv/latecapital // Organized in three chapters, At the Top of Grasshoppers Hill (2016-17) examines overlapping narratives in Mexico City surrounding the Second French Empire’s invasion in Mexico in 1861 and the 1968 state-sponsored student massacre at Tlatelolco, tracing the densities and accruals of time, history, and memory, and the power structures and technologies that produce them as such. // On The Reunion (2019): Somewhere between the essayistic, experimental animation, and new manifesto for survival strategies in the age of climate catastrophe, this short film resuscitates the memory of the lost society through an excavation of its ruins and its contemporary namesake, moving through hallucinatory visions of climate disaster, and footage from a sci-fi epic written by Ursula K. Le Guin — filmed in The Reunion Tower itself. // AT HOME BUT NOT AT HOME (2019) Combining 16mm footage with drone videography, montages from the Parallel cinema movement in India, desktop screengrabs, and Skype interviews with my father, the resulting film utilizes various methods and modes of seeing at a distance to question the construction of artifice, memory, and identity through the moving image. // Suneil Sanzgiri is an artist, researcher, filmmaker, and video journalist working to understand how systems of oppression are informed and reinforced by trauma, history, and memory. - @late__capital on Instagram

- 121 years ago, the Spaniards sold us to the Americans, because they didn’t want to compromise their pride. Didn’t want to be known as a falling empire that lost to some “Indios”. To make Spain look more honourable, Spain and America staged the Mock Battle of Manila a few months prior.

If it is true that one is seriously thinking about me (for the Prize), I very much wish to be considered together with Madame Curie with respect to our research on radioactive bodies. In a letter in 1903, several members of the lAcadémie des Sciences, including Henri Poincaré and Gaston Darboux, had nominated Becquerel and Pierre Curie for the Prize in Physics. Maries name was not mentioned. This caused Gösta Mittag-Leffler, a professor of mathematics at Stockholm University College, to write to Pierre Curie. That letter has not survived but Pierre Curies answer, dated on 6 August, 1903, has been preserved. The quote above is an extract from Pierre Curies letter. The 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to Antoine Henri Becquerel, Pierre Curie (pictured left) and Marie Curie, née Sklodowska (pictured right).
