Flooding extended from Phoenix to Glendale as Cave Creek overflowed and dumped water into Grand and Arizona Canals. 📷: The photo was taken looking south on 58th Drive towards Grand from Glendale. It’s #FargoHistoryFriday! #FargoHistoryPost: Silver Tray Cafe Abraham Solow opened the Silver Tray Cafe at its first location, 14th 8th St. around 1933. Fast forward 2 years to 1935 and the Silver Tray moved to 604 Front Street which is the current home to @babbscoffeehouse! The Silver Tray moved a third time to NP between 1939 and 1940. The final move happened in 1947 to 408 Broadway along with a name change to the Silver Tray Tavern around 1954. Louis Hoffman purchased the cafe from Solow and closed in 1976. Its a Water Street Wednesday reveal! Last Wednesdays image was of Town & Country Pastry and Coffee Shop at One Water Street, built ca. 1954 and now home to Haskells Port of Excelsior. This coffee shop was remodeled to house Excelsiors Municipal Liquor Store and Lounge by 1957. After more remodelings, the grand opening of The Port of Excelsior was announced in 1976. It had a nautical aura, with Captain and Crew dressed in nautical-wear and featuring a rooftop beacon, wheel house, the Pilot House for after dinner crowd, Main Bar with brass rail, Stow-a–way lounge for more informal gatherings and an adjacent liquor store called the Cargo Hold. In 1979 this municipal business was sold to Haskells, who own and operate it today. Residents are having their say about outdoor dining with more than 2,600 signatures already collected on a change.org petition to close Main Street Mornington to traffic from October 30th to November 22nd in line with the state governments COVID-19 roadmap. Mornington resident Alexis Collier who started the petition said closing the popular thoroughfare from Barkly Street roundabout down to the Esplanade every Friday lunchtime to Sunday afternoon would greatly assist the regeneration of Mornington’s retail and hospitality businesses. This closure would be instrumental to kick start the re-opening of the Main Street traders which have all been hard hit by the COVID-19 closures. The road closure would enable venues to increase the number of patrons whilst abiding with COVID-19 distance requirements. Ms Collier said. Ms Collier, who is hoping to gain 5,000 signatures on the petition said banning traffic would mean traders could limit themselves to the Main Street area the same width as their frontage and extend to the middle of the road for service. We survived our #blackhistory then, and by God’s Grace WE WILL SURVIVE COVID-19 in 2020🙏🏽🙌🏽 The Chicken Box opened its doors on Pine Street (now Roxboro) in 1957 under proprietorship of Claiborne Tapp, Jr. The business during its Pine Street location was challenged with what many other small black owned businesses faced - the need to relocate, inadequate funds, reestablishment in unfamiliar territories, and the need to shut down while rebuilding. Urban Renewal (“black removal”) wiped out many black businesses along Pine Street, Fayetteville, and Pettigrew along with surrounding, supporting residential neighborhoods. Regrettably the perceived goal of Urban Renewal failed many small black enterprises leaving them in a devastating plight. One of the few Pine Street enterprises to survive was The Chicken Box. This weekend we made the hard decision to put our funky retro (even though we bought them BRAND NEW when we opened) booths into storage, and convert the space to retail display. With over 140 varieties of FTO coffee, almost as many teas, jams, jellies, pickles, sauces, rubs, and a HUGE selection of local art, handicrafts, AND books by local authors, and so much more ... Well, we realized that we needed to expand our retail while continuing to offer amazing coffee, meals and the best made from scratch baking - all of it to go in Eco-friendly compostable containers. Another street that was home to many of the rich and famous in Buffalo was Lincoln Parkway. Frederick Law Olmstead and Calvert Vaux designed parkways to be pleasant roads connecting various parks. Lincoln Parkway connected Soldier’s Place to Delaware Park with a peaceful, tree-lined route with room for pedestrians, automobiles, and horses. Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN #24 N E Brotchie Pharmacy 21 Keys Street, Beaumaris Beaumaris’s enviable legacy of mid-century buildings is not just all about houses… there were churches, school buildings, banks, public halls… and Norm Brotchie’s chemist shop in Keys Road. The son of a pharmacist, Norm’s career arc was firmly predestined. Qualifying as a chemist in the early 1950s, we went soon had designs on a pharmacy of his very own. He eyed a potential location far south across the river, down Beaumaris way. Keys Street had already burgeoned as a local retail hotspot by the mid-1950s, when Norm Brotchie engaged Peter McIntyre to design stylish new premises at No 21. The young architect rose effortlessly to the occasion with that you see before you: a simple edifice with recessed window-wall giving way to an interior with fantastically futuristic furniture and an eye-popping ceramic mural of overscaled pharmaceutical paraphernalia. Norm Brotchie’s Keys Street pharmacy remained a hallowed local dispensary for years and years… it was still running in the 1970s, after Norm opened a second outlet on the East Concourse. While the original shop was later converted into a medical centre, the mural was at least partly preserved and remained a nifty snippet of mid-century public art until its regretful obliteration in 2007.
