Sunday Culture trip; The Cuban Sandwich The argument over the origins of the Cuban sandwich ( also called Cubano ) have been going on for many years. Some say it was first introduced more than 500 years ago by the Taíno tribe in Cuba, who inhabited the island long before the Spaniards arrived. But in Cuba, the sandwich was not known as a ‘Cuban’ sandwich, but simply called ‘sandwich’. The good folk of Tampa and Miami Florida however, lay claim it was developed by them for the Cuban Tobacco workers who migrated to south Florida in the 1800s. Since Cuba is only 90 miles from Florida, many Cubans moved to Key West in the late 1800s to avoid Spanish Rule. The Cuban cigar manufacturers also wanted a safer place to manufacture.  This marked the beginning of a significant Cuban influence in Key West and the rest of Florida that continues today. Art and I, have had a long standing relationship since I was a 5year old, sketching a potted plant in front of me, at a home long gone. Art, then became a home which I carry daily. Here is a work I made for EXQUIZINE by Pulp Society and Irregular Art Fair -a blind-prompt-based collaborative game played with strangers. I received a prompt from Sid Jaishankar, and I drew one in response: titled Banana-Skin Butcheries, 8x8inches, pen&ink on paper. Its a fictionalization of an advertisement that occurred in Harpers Weekly-A Journal of Civilization (American political magazine, active 1857-1916). The original cartoon was published on May 29,1880, depicting a two-panel cause and effect of dropping banana peels resulting in injuries due to slipping on them. In my pen and ink work, if you look closely, the banana peel has hate, bias, fear written in each of them. Because, literally, we consume it, we litter it everywhere, and thats the root of what butchers us today. _____ I think that art has power. And when overlayered with more context, it becomes timeless. Unfortunately, the context of hate, fear and bias butchering us, has proven to be timeless. 1. Genoa Pizza & Grill, Glenolden, PA. I got the Genoa special cheese steak. It came with pepperoni, mushrooms, fried onions, sauce and the cheese melted on top. I really like this cheesesteak. My first bite just tasted really good. I think they make their own rolls. Or they just toast them. I dont know why but I really like to roll. Looking at the picture of this Cheesesteak, I would not expect to like it. It looks like the mushroom spent no time on the grill. They are mixed in nicely with the meat, pepperoni, fried onions and sauce. There is not a lot of cheese. I had a roll blow out. This is one of those cheesesteaks that just works. Ive got a serious craving for a pastrami sandwich right now! No joke! I can remember having these sandwiches as a kid, my mom would toast the rye bread and warm the sauerkraut up on the stove. Tried out @lumberjackskitchen today. I have always been interested in this place because of the huge purple and blue dragon outside of the restaurant. The interior is very nice and reminds me of a modern cracker barrel. The food we got was a grilled cheese burger melt & their homemade meatloaf. Korean style Burnt Ends Banh Mi! Cubed up some pork belly, rubbed it with turbinado, 5 spice, white pepper, a little dried ginger, and salt. Smoked on my @traegergrills Timberline 850 at 250* for 2 hours. Then tossed them into a glaze I made with Gochujang, Hoisin, honey, soy, mirin, grated ginger, grated garlic, and rice vinegar. Tossed it back into the smoker for another 2 hours until the sauce thickened and the pork belly was tender AF. Made the banh mi using some picked Fresno peppers, pickled carrots, cucumber, and thinly sliced red onion. The four cheeses were very well Blended and there was a lot of cheese. The four cheeses really dominate this cheesesteak. * Sidebar * This reads harsh but I really liked this cheesesteak. I gave it 90/100. * One of the cheeses must have been a greasy cheese because this was a greasy cheese steak. Theres a decent amount of meat but it was dominated by the cheeses. I could see all the extras but most of the taste was dominated by the cheeses. It was a traditional roll. The roll was a victim of the greasy cheese and had a blowout. This has taken ages to post coz we have been busy bees 🐝 Last Sunday we went to The Spotted Cow for a friends birthday. We were a big group, I think there were 12 of us eating and we had pre-booked and pre-ordered too. L got the Pork Loin 🐷 and K got the Nut Roast 🥜 The pork was beautiful, so tender and perfectly crispy on the outside, there was also a good amount of it. The potatoes were okay and the veg was lovely. The gravy was delicious and the apple sauce was spot on. K thought the Nut Roast was the best yet! It was a lovely combination of flavours. Both of our Yorkie Puds were sadly a bit burnt, but I think that’s a product of being in a big group. We also got the Cauli Cheese which was delightful. Came with Yorkie Pud ❌ (only comes with if you get the beef, have to pay extra if you want one) Great veggie option (that could be made vegan) ✅ Price £11.95 for pork, £10.95 for veggie/vegan.
