Robert Hooke was #onthisday in 1635 in Freshwater, Isle of Wright. Hooke was a Surveyor to the City of London and, in partnership with Sir Christopher Wren, created the design of The Monument, which took six years to be completed, from 1671 to 1677. Hooke worked with Wren on the design of the Royal Observatory Greenwich, Montagu House in Bloomsbury, and the Bethlem Royal Hospital. They were keen astronomers, which is why The Monument was built to also serve as a Zenith telescope. 🔭 Hooke died on 3 March 1703. No authenticated portraits of him survive. 🔗 Click the link in bio to learn more about our history. ©London Metropolitan Archives, City of London. #TheMonument #OTD #GreatFireOfLondon #CityOfLondon #History #Heritage #RobertHooke #DrRobertHooke #SirChristopherWren #London #LondonTogether #OurCityTogether #VisitLondon #VisittheCity #LondonArchitecture - @visitthemonument on Instagram

Proud to announce the acquisition of one of the most prestigious land sites in Shanghai. This jewel lies in the center of Shanghai along Huaihai Road, the most romantic and heritage boulevard. Huaihai Road was once Avenue Joffre, named after the French general Joseph Joffre in 1922. By the 1930s, western-style restaurants, night clubs and dancing halls filled the district with music spilling out to the streets. It was adored by the most cultured and fashion-forward crowd in Shanghai so much that it was known as the Oriental Avenue des Champs-Elysees. We create, we celebrate and we reinvigorate the glamour and romance of Huaihai Road’s golden days. #200YearsOfOldStone: During the peak of the Civil War in 1863, members from Old Stone Church helped purchase a house on Wilson Street called the Home for Friendless Strangers. Individuals displaced or impacted by the Civil War were taken here for comfort, aide, and support. The Wilson Street house was later named the Lakeside Hospital and went on to become @uhhospitals_cle. Today, UH sits on more than 35 acres of land and leads the way in healthcare and technology. There are no limits to what a few strong-willed and passionate people can accomplish. We are thankful for the Old Stone members who set an example for each of us to lead with kindness. In doing this, they unknowingly created a world-class healthcare system. #ClevelandHistory #PresbyterianChurch #Bicentennial 📸: Courtesy of University Hospitals - @oldstonechurchcle on Instagram

Branford House was the estate built on Avery Point in 1904 by Morton Plant, successful railroad, steamship and hotel businessman. The estate was turned over to the state in the 1930s. The Coast Guard used it for training during World War II. It became the Southeastern Campus of the University of Connecticut (later renamed University of Connecticut at Avery Point) in 1969. Happy Labor Day! Mechanics Hall in Portland is a landmark of Maine workers. The Italianate building was built 1857-59 by and for members of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association. It was designed by Portland architect Thomas Sparrow, also a member. The MCMA was founded in 1815 as a social organization for master crafts people, entrepreneurs, and apprentices in the “mechanical arts”. They held fairs and exhibitions to showcase the skills of craftsmen, as well as lectures, dances, and marches down Congress Street where groups of tradespeople would carry handmade banners to promote their crafts - like this amazing Cabinet Maker’s trade banner from 1841. . . #laborday #laborhistory #mainemechanics #maine200 #mainehistory #portlandme #portlandmaine #historicpreservation #thisplacematters - @portlandlandmarks on Instagram

Established in 1860 and incorporated in 1885. The complex stretched along 5th Street between Grand, Clinton, and Willow. ✏ The company was famous for their Venus Pencil. A pencil that was made in 17 different degrees, from the very softest to the very hardest degree. The company even changed their name to Venus Pen & Pencil Company in 1956. ✏ In 1963, operations in Hoboken were coming to a halt. Antiquated buildings, taxes and old machinery were all factors to the companys relocation. 600-700 union textile workers (77a) were made aware of the change and efforts were made to keep operations in Hoboken. ✏ The efforts were fruitless, and later that year the company moved out of Hoboken. Almost immediately, the complex was demolished to make room for residential towers, known as Church Towers. Today the company is a subsidy of a German pencil company called Faber-Castell. ✏ #HobokenHistory #Hoboken #History #NewJersey #NJ #NJHistory #AmericanLeadPencil #PencilHistory - @hobokenhistory on Instagram

Last week we shared the interior of 383 George Street, here is what it would have looked like from the street around that time. The lion featured on the receipts also hung above the entrance to the store! . This section of the street was built for Thomas Bradburn around 1860 and was likely designed by John H. Selkirk from Buffalo, New York. . Next door to Fair’s was the H. LeBrun and Co. menswear store at 381 George Street. LeBrun’s was established in 1873 and later occupied the spaces beside the Bank of Toronto on both George Street and Hunter Street from the early 1900s until the late 1920s. The owner, Henry LeBrun, was heavily involved in local sports and managed Peterborough’s very successful field lacrosse team for two decades! . 📷Peterborough Museum & Archives 2000-012-000360-1 . #throwbackthursday #tbt #ptbo #ptbocanada #coolsign #coolsignage #historicstorefront #downtownptbo #ptbohistory #heritage - @doors_openptbo on Instagram

Four years ago, Asheville City Council approved a resolution calling for the start of a new dialogue and planning process around what to do with a plot of city-owned land along Haywood Street and Page Avenue, and across from the Basilica of St. Lawrence and Harrah’s Cherokee Center - Asheville. Now, after a lot of discussion, a specific Haywood Page Project proposal is on the table. City officials and residents have been arguing over this site, known by many as the “pit of despair,” for almost 20 years. . . . The proposal calls the realignment of roads and the construction of a new city park featuring an egg-shaped plaza, native plantings and more. It also calls for the construction of a 7-story building that would be home to a mix of uses. These plans are being reviewed by city advisory boards right now before they go to Asheville City Council for approval. These renderings were presented by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to a recent meeting of the Asheville Downtown Commission. #avlnews #asheville - @ashevegas on Instagram

Dr. Ebenezer Johnson became Buffalo’s first mayor in 1832. He built Johnson’s Cottage on Delaware Avenue in 1834 on 25 acres of land. After his death in 1849, the property was sold to the Buffalo Female Academy around 1851 and served as their first building. The Buffalo Female Academy later changed its name to Buffalo Seminary. Johnson’s Cottage was demolished in 1919 (courtesy of Pat Connors). #cityspotlight #buffalo #365daysofhistory - @historypress on Instagram
