Twitter is where I talk about science the most. I share the latest updates there and debunk the myths that keep circulating, created and promoted by those who oppose climate action. . The latest myth, though, is so bad and so widespread that I figured I’d share it here too. . Devastating wild fires are still burning large areas of California and the West Coast. . But people have been sharing maps of US fires like this first one, claiming that they show there are no fires in Canada – so somehow that means that the fires in the US are exaggerated or started by climate activists trying to prove climate change is real or ... something?! . The truth is simple: US maps only show US data. Of course there are wildfires across the border right now - as you can see from the second map from Natural Resources Canada. . British Columbia isn’t having as bad a wildfire season as the western US this year, but 2018 was a record season for them, and 2019 was a record season for Alaska. And remember the record-setting Australian bushfires? Those were just this past January. . Where does climate change come into it? . Most wildfires in the lower 48 states are the result of accidental human ignition (only 7% are deliberate arson) and most wildfires in Canada and Alaska are the result of lightning. . But climate change is increasing the area burned by wildfire, by drying out the vegetation. The last figure shows how the area burned by wildfire has more than doubled since the 1980s as a result of a warmer, drier climate. . Imagine throwing a match on a pile of green wood. What happens? . Then imagine throwing a match on a pile of bone dry kindling. What happens? . That’s the difference climate change makes, regardless of whether a fire is ignited by lightning or human causes. . On Wednesday evening just after dusk, the International Space Station will fly directly over Orlando, will be visible to anyone in the Southeast, and provide a nice break in these long days as it races through space at 17,100 miles per hour -- which is about five miles a second (nearly as fast I drove in high school). Watching it is always a fun activity for families and all you have to do is look at this map to see where it will be and when. Follow the path of the arrows and then look at the time in the 24-hour format. If you live within the circle (and the skies are clear) just watch for a very bright star moving steadily across the sky from the southwest to the northeast. The ISS and its crew will be at an altitude of 250 miles (yes, you can see that far) and will be crossing Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula around 9:11 Eastern Time and will be visible for about six minutes before going around the earth somewhere east of New Jersey having covered about 2,000 miles in that time. - @hike_it_florida on Instagram

A fleet of well over 200 Chinese fishing vessels have been stationed in the waters just off the Galapagos for a number of weeks now. However, what is currently being witnessed is not a new phenomenon. Similar fleets, although often not as large, have visited the Galapagos in the past. Although the fleet is legally, and officially, targeting squid and tuna in international waters, there are undoubtedly, and possibly intentionally, going to be huge numbers of other bycatch species effected. One of the fleets mother-ships was found to have hundreds of tonnes of illegally caught sharks on board in 2017. Recently, the Chinese government have announced it will start a three month fishing ban in the region...but not until September... Week 11 of MappingAtoZ: Kevo, Finland 🇫🇮 There hasn’t been an easier letter to pick a place for than K... Kevo Research Station Now this may seem like a pretty random choice to most, but for the few who have had the chance to visit know it’s magic. For me, Kevo was a place for research, albeit amateur. It was the study area of my undergrad dissertation. Spending a couple of weeks trudging though 4ft of snow, collecting data on the snow pack and the environment over, certainly left me with a lot of memories. I wasn’t sure how to represent this unique arctic environment, the map I settled on was ‘My Journey’ across this valley. Over seven days I spanned the valley collecting data at 65 locations, these are my transects and their elevation profiles between the 6th and 12th March 2016. I tried to work on some styling here that shows the routes fading into the white snowy hilltops and cutting over the icy lake surface. El Instituto Estatal de Protección Civil del Estado de Tabasco ( IPCET) informó esta tarde que de acuerdo al Sistema Nacional de Información de la Calidad del Aire (SINAICA), la masa de polvo proveniente de áfrica se encuentra ya en territorio tabasqueño. El organismo advirtió que la bruma densa podría estarse registrando a partir de las 3:00 am de este viernes, principalmente en las subregiones de Ríos y Pantanos. Por ello, pidió a la ciudadanía tomar precauciones, entre estas, proteger a personas vulnerables con enfermedades respiratorias crónicas, resguardarse en casa, cerrar puertas y ventanas y usar cubrebocas, ya que este fenómeno genera riesgo de bacterias, virus, esporas, hierro, mercurio, y pesticidas conducidas por el polvo, lo que podría derivar en la aparición de alergias y crisis asmáticas. - @gabo_aysa on Instagram

Qui Courage Spending a cold night wading through damp grass isn’t everybody’s idea of fun. Thats exactly what the intrepid participants from the current Nightscapes and Startrails course did on Friday September 11th. I drove out there in the late afternoon to scout the area in daylight. The group came out to meet me at 9pm at an old disused rail bridge over the Boorowa River for an evening shooting Milky Way Nightscapes. The northwest location was chosen to give the group some extra time under clear skies from cloud predicted to be moving in from the south during the night. I had scouted two locations beforehand, the old rail bridge over the river that aligned with the setting Milky Way and a canola field south of the road for some circumpolar (circular) star trails somewhat later, after midnight. Some chose to stay in the pub in Boorowa for the night while others headed back to Canberra arriving at 3:00am. Thanks to all participants for your courage, patience and great company.
