It’s generally been really hard for me to find a mentor figure. And when I asked successful people for advice, I was met with a lot of platitudes (ie. “just don’t give up!”) and not a lot of specific advice. No one was willing to give me any transparency about their journey, so not only did I not get the right guidance, but I also felt like a failure for not having accomplished X at whatever age—only to find out later that these same people I was comparing myself to had other resources and starting lines (ie. they had a trust fund, etc.). . . I transitioned into the sustainable fashion world from the world of arts activism/non-profits in 2014. Now that it is a rising industry, I want to give other women who share a similar background as me (immigrant, women of color) honest advice about what it really takes to succeed and find their role in the movement. No trust funds necessary, sis! . . That’s why I started an online show/podcast called @gritandglamourshow where I do honest interviews with fashion role models. And since I get a lot of questions about my career path, Im thinking of doing a Grit & Glamour Office Hours convo on IG Live so you can ask me anything you want. Tourism represents the Greater Palm Springs area’s number one industry. In 2019 alone, visitor spending was over $5.9 billion and supported over 53,000 jobs. When the coronavirus hit this spring, it represented a devastating impact on the local economy, forcing area hotels and outdoor attractions like the Hyatt Regency Indian Wells and the Living Desert to cease operations for nearly three months. Now, both have reopened and are excited to welcome back travelers who have been cooped up inside for months and are eager to once again return to the desert oasis. “I can’t imagine anything more important right now than getting people back to the resort,” said Jason Baer, the Director of Sales and Marketing at the Regency. “Coming out and having an opportunity to be away from people and breathe in fresh air just changes your perspective and gets guests to feeling more normal.” The nine cities represented in the Greater Palm Springs area are hopeful that the future is bright.
