Onglet is a serious business especially when it is as good as these turned out. Left to right, cows all the way: Shetland, Gloucester and a Hereford. Deep, earthy, rich, like wandering through a dark wood by glo worm light to a clearing full of plump mushrooms. All were very good, but the Hereford just pipped the other two natives. A close run thing of very fine margins. The Shetland cow was a trier, love her, but barely produced enough milk to keep a hamster going and so her calves suffered. She came out of the winter in good nick having been stripped early of her calf last year, but really accelerated on Spring flushed grass from April 1st, the day the cattle get out of the mud and into the green room. She went on to achieve plenty @proudsow Gloucester lost her calf, a baby that never looked like it would see the end of the day from the moment it was born. It is always a tough call to condemn a cow immediately for something that isnt their fault, but it is the hard facts of financial management that a cash-in is easier to stomach than a 12 month wait for another potential disappointment. Ex-dairy for @darbyslondon Hereford had so much promise for a bright future. Bought in from a store cattle sale she was only supposed to be a solid grazer for straight to slaughter, but she grew long and sturdy and quickly became the eye catching lady of the herd and with this talent she was presented to Ted the bull who duly took her up town. She gave birth to a smashing black, white faced calf, but could not give a fig for her baby. She bumped and bashed and kicked and butted her baby away everytime he went to suckle. You simply cannot stand by a cow that makes you do all the work. @hillandszrok were the beneficiarys of her fine body.
