A few weeks ago I undertook my first ever editorial assignment, commissioned by The Wall St Journal. I accompanied scientists to a koala sanctuary near Cooma NSW to photograph them caring for koalas and then reintroducing them into fire affected bushland. The scientists use GPS to locate and monitor the koalas once they have been released, many of which suffered physical and mental trauma from the 2020 summer bushfires. Three of the koalas at the sanctuary are named after the three American pilots who lost their lives when their water bombing plane crashed while protecting the sanctuary from bushfire. ‘Researchers are deploying heat-seeking drones and studying the chemistry of leaves to determine how creatures like the koala can survive in a burned landscape, a new effort to understand the effects of devastating wildfires across the globe.’ Link to article in bio (paywall) @aishah_k @oculi @wsj @wsjphotos - @kenton.davey on Instagram

One of my favorite beaches in the world is Lucky Bay. There is pure white sand and deep blue water here. Roos run free here as they pick up salty snacks like crab and clams washed ashore. Unfortunately an estimated a billion animals may have died from the current Australia fire. Our great football club has endured many challenges in its long and proud history but like so many others we never even considered the possibility of tangling with a pandemic! Currently I see there are so many great fundraising initiatives out there aiming to promote better health and well being for all, a couple in which I am actively a part of. My point being that I believe that our local sporting clubs play one of the most pivotal roles in creating better communities and healthier people as well as providing a place and sense of belonging for so many. To help our club get through this period, we’ve established a Borough Future Fund and are calling for donations. Since the first day of this trip I said that my dream would be to finally see a kangaroo by the beach.✨ • And boom 2 weeks later a kangaroo in the sand, right next to the bluest water around.🙏 There were no other kangaroos in sight and I was lucky to spot it in the bush. I was also snacking on a carrot which is how I managed to bring it closer to the beach.🙈 Mind you, I moved to Australia 6 years ago - so this was a big one for me.😊 • I really believe you need to verbalize your dreams to make them happen. Just like some of the other sports personalities I’ve had on the podcast so far, Sam Mitchell doesn’t require much of an introduction. 329 AFL games 4x Hawthorn Football Club premiership player 5x Hawthorn Football Club best and fairest 3x All Australian 2012 Brownlow medalist I apologise to Sam as I got some of these stats wrong in the actual interview. His resume at the end of his career is as good as anybody to have played the game, however Mitchell was initially overlooked at under 18 level and had to find another way to the top flight via Box Hill Hawks in the VFL. After being taken by Hawthorn at pick 36 in the 2001 draft, his early years saw him develop his determination to succeed and was rewarded by winning back to back most determined awards. Overtime he would become one of most prolific ball winners the game has seen and was known for his incredible consistency, skills, decision making and game IQ. He has now entered the coaching space on the back of a stellar playing career and is widely tipped to be a senior coach in waiting. Throughout our conversation, Sam discusses being overlooked, his willingness to work on his strengths, his training habits and routines, his willingness to make mistakes to test the boundaries, some insights into his coaching thoughts and his experiences working with Alistair Clarkson and Adam Simpson. The NRL’s mental health program, NRL State of Mind announced a partnership with not-for-profit mental health foundation, @gotcha4life strengthening the game’s long-standing approach to increasing positive mental wellbeing and support amongst communities . Ahead of the Sea Eagles hosting the Tigers this weekend, NRL State of Mind ambassador, @_joel.thompson_ , and Gotcha4Life ambassador @benji6marshall said they were proud to be part of a game that supported a movement of positive mental wellbeing and resilience. “For me, if I’m happy off the field, my footy goes up another level and I’m ultimately a better person to be around,” Thompson said. . “The more awareness and support of the NRL’s State of Mind program, the better. Narrabeen Lagoon Trail followed by The Newport. The trail is flat with no stairs however it’s VERY long. We turned around after an hour of walking 🐶 Theres also lots of bike riders so weekdays might be better when it’s less busy!!
