Inspired by the ancient greek pottery illustrations, I create this illustration depicting the archaic era of Greek women doing their make up but this time using @lookecosmetics 😆🤩 When I studied about greek art, I was fascinated by the line quality they have. They could portray the fabric flow realistically. I love how ancient greek women truly care about their look, I saw different woman each had their own hairstyle, fashion style and jewelries. They even wear traditional make up! Lipsticks were made from a paste made with red iron oxide and ochre clays or beeswax mixed with olive oil. A red powder made from beetroots was added to the cheeks. Eyeshadows were made with ground charcoal mixed with olive oil (the miracles of olive oil!). In Greece hair was very important as it showed the class differences, slaves had short hair and rich or free women had long hair, however, after they married, they would always wear their hair up like in a bun. Their hair were decked up with accessories like jeweled combs, scarves and hair pins. Your story unfolded in stages where eventually your name lost its meaning, as every time you were wounded, shredding a feather, till they cut down your wings completely. First being nearly a kid of five or six and getting married to a person of about your fathers age and ironically being the badi bahu of a large zamindar family while you were the youngest member present. The only person who felt like a friend, Satya Thakur, was sent away from you. Then you saw a part of you, your innocence, and those warm sentiments for your brother-in-law, leaving abruptly on a day. Then there came brutal happenings as your heart already bleeded with the separation of Satya. You saw the masks falling off from faces of your husband, where his enraged self, bet you like a saddist, and then being raped by Mahendra, the mentally challenged identical twin of your husband. Your disfigured and mutilated feet, the very heinous gift of your husband, turned out to make you a chudail, as per the rumours and folklores. Returning after five long years, when Satya wondered how the tiny juvenile girl vanished and asked,choti si badi bahu thhi, kahan gayi woh? Kya kiya apne uske saath? And you replied,khaa gayi.. This will explore pre-colonial gender notions and fluidity, guided by tantric techniques that connect to sensual mathematics and sound as a weapon. Tanaz Eshaghian A vital documentary about transsexuality in modern Tehran, exploring issues of gender and sexual identity while following the personal stories of some patients at a gender reassignment clinic. Although homosexual relationships are illegal (punishable by death) in Iran, sex reassignment operations are permitted. In 1987, Islamic leader Ayatollah Khomeini passed a fatwa allowing sex-change operations as a cure for diagnosed transsexuals. In Iran, homosexuality is socialised to be considered a shameful choice and transsexuality is (very wrongly!) thought of as a curable mental illness. Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has notoriously proclaimed that there are no homosexuals in Iran—homosexuality has (again, wrongly!) become interchangeable with transsexuality due to fear, censorship and repression. One of the patients at Dr. Bahram Mir-Jalalis Mirdamad Surgical Centre is Ali Askar, a 24-year-old who faces harassment due to their feminine appearance and behaviour. They do not want to become a woman but see no other options in Iranian society. They assert that they are not homosexual and are socialised by society to view homosexuality as something that is immoral. By the end of the film, Ali has become a woman named Negar. She has been disowned by her family, experienced depression and has had to work as a prostitute. Twenty-year-old Anoosh has been ostracised due to their femininity. Their boyfriend feels more comfortable when Anoosh dresses as a woman, and in contrast to Ali, Anooshs mother is supportive of their desire to change sex. The end of the film shows Anoosh-now Anahita–happy and engaged to her boyfriend. However, her boyfriend has become increasingly distant since Anahita had her surgery. The film played at the Sundance Film Festival and the Berlin International Film Festival, winning three awards. It is not currently available to watch online. Posted @withregram • @edinburghmedicalschool This brand new piece of art was photographed and produced by Lawrence Winram and features medical students, Simran, Izzie, Sorna, Ella, Mei Yen, Caitlyn, Megan and Liam alongside Teaching Fellow in Anatomical Science, Alethea. It is a reimagining of a Rembrandt painting from 1632 called ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Nicolaes Tulp’ (swipe to see it) a copy of which hangs in our Department of Anatomy. The original shows a group of male medical students and a male teacher gathered around a cadaver. We have reproduced this image with the present day students who represented the Edinburgh Seven at last year’s posthumous honorary degree ceremony, along with a member of our current anatomy teaching team. Its new home is the Sophia Jex-Blake common room in the Chancellor’s Building at Edinburgh BioQuarter.
