Lady Macbeth (2016) Lady Macbeth had a budget of half a million so it was a low budget movie but almost every other Head of Department was a industry veteran. I was quite inexperienced in comparison. The DP was Aussie Ari Wegner and fortunately we both got a chance to do some good prep. The Production Designer was the formidable Jacqueline Abrahams (The Lobster) and 1st AD was George Every (Last King of Scotland). They were the unseen powerhouses that made the film. I had Best Boy French Max @max.taste and Rascal Jack Knott @surelyknott to keep me company. Because of the budget, and possibly my own inexperience, we didnt have any big lights. Florence Pughs characters bedroom was on the third floor about 15 meters up, and below it was a steep grassy slope. There was almost no hope of lighting from outside. Instead the natural northern light did the work. With all the time and money in the world we probably couldnt have lit the shot of her in bed any better if we tried. Sometimes however the fluctuating sun meant we had to shoot the same scene twice... and needless to say only one version made it in. Lights were almost all tungsten and a HMI 6K Par. Me and a Geordie carpenter built a wonkey practical rig (my design) that we used for the dinner scene, incidentally my favorite shot in the film, and it worked better than hoped. Importantly it didnt fall down. At the wrap party 1st AD George said Good work from you and your team, but I think he meant Well done for not getting fired. Hard to know with George... Personal Highlights were Art Director Thalia having to spray-paint a dead horse, AD George releasing us early on Saturdays so we could go to Newcastle for a beer, and Renny the Grip telling us on day 2 not to run about like clowns. Sometimes on jobs since Id hear the Producer or DP saying We have the Gaffer from Lady Macbeth and I always love watching the disappointment slowly sink in as whoever it is realises its me theyre talking about. - @ben.milla on Instagram

Storytime: In the first couple weeks of my sophomore year I wrote a long spoken word poem called “Bathwater.” I shared it with my main man @gs_visuals and he said we should film it; I was like, “Weird idea but okay, cool.” We filmed it a couple months later and I kinda forgot about it because I was focused on my “real film projects.” Fast-forward to the end of my sophomore year (now) and none of those other projects have had near the impact I was hoping for. Meanwhile, Bathwater just won “Best Experimental Film” at the @guerrillastudentfilmfest; neither me nor Graham were even tuning into the stream when we won. Several people have come up to me to tell me that the film really meant something to them. Not that this means that my other films have no value or anything like that, just that it shows how how much God likes to use the unexpected over the expected.
