My wheat-hued mother used to tell a story about how, when I was small and ready to nap I said to her: “I’m glad you and I are white and Dawn (my sis) and Dad are Black.” Or maybe with something bit more sinister: like watching my 5-foot-8 father be pulled out of his car because he ‘matched the description’ of some 6-foot-3 bread thief, and also for no reason at all. Should I start with the opening night of The Blair Witch Project - when a packed theater left a single seat available next to a man who thought my skin tone was offensive? I’m never quite sure where to begin. The summer has been hot and sticky with grief. And even while the air hangs a little heavier and the days tumble by, the fires that burned at the start of the season have cleared space for a newness that always follows a deep scorch. Black Voices. In this summer of discontent, I believe that my blackness has never been more valuable than it is right now. It has never been allowed to take up so much space, even in unexpected spaces. And I want to amplify that. By amplifying other Black voices. Swipe through for 10 Black food accounts that I love. In order to ensure a good night’s sleep, leaving you fresh & rejuvenated, here are some tips: . 1. Limit Your Caffeine Caffeine interrupts the flow of melatonin, which is the chemical that promotes sleep. . 2. Avoid Alcohol Before Bed Alcohol blocks REM sleep, which can cause cause migraines and poor memory. . 3. Exercise Moving your body can help reduce the stress hormone that often keeps us awake, allowing for a relaxing and deep sleep. . 4. Create a Routine Having a bedtime ritual, signals to the body, that it is time to go to sleep. This routine can include having a bath or listening to calming music just before bed. . 5. Avoid long, unregulated naps This may be difficult if you are very tired during the day, but having a long nap throws off your nighty sleep cycle. . 6. Turn off Electronics Avoid using your laptop or cellphone right before bedtime.
