The last major #USNavy ship sunk in #WWII, the cruiser USS Indianapolis (CA 35) delivered the final blow that ended the war. 75 years later, they’ve left a legacy of resilience and sacrifice. Honoring the service, sacrifice and resilience of the crew, @usnavycno has asked the Fleet for a moment of silence and members of Congress will present the survivors with the Congressional Gold Medal during a virtual ceremony today at 1100 EDT. The story of the WWII service and ultimate loss of Indianapolis is an important chapter in the story of the U.S. Navy. Days after delivering components of the atomic bomb later dropped on Hiroshima to a base in the Pacific, the cruiser was attacked by a Japanese sub just after midnight on July 30, 1945. Sinking within minutes, more than 880 of the ship’s 1,196 Sailors and Marines went into the water. After four to five days of exposure, drowning, and shark attacks, only 316 survived. Eight survivors remain alive today. While the ship’s final act has made her the subject of enduring public interest, it was her remarkable success in battle that made her and her crew legends. Indianapolis earned 10 battle stars for her service during WWII. #GreatestGeneration #WWII75 #ValorInThePacific #USNHistory #NavalHistory - @usnhistory on Instagram

Before the Los Angeles coastline was engineered, before Venice was dug out and drained, one wouldn’t be surrounded by California palms or oil fields, but by what frontier boosters called an ‘uninhabitable swamp.’ The shellfish-laden wetland, where Mussel Beach sits today, had been a food source for the Kizh Nation for over 7,000 years, until they were enslaved by the Spanish to build the San Gabriel Mission. Photo: Endless oil fields on the strip between Venice and Playa del Rey, once site of the Ballona wetland, ca. 1930s take a stroll on Mussel Beach on this sunny day. This is an artist’s rendition of a bird’s-eye view of Sturgeon Bay in 1880. In just 30 years, the village had been transformed from a pine forest to the bustling county seat of Door County with its abundance of sawmills. The business district was already established on Cedar Street (Third Avenue), and the courthouse stood on the outskirts of the community. Stone quarries, lime kilns, and ice operations all fed into the burgeoning city’s economy. New immigrants and established entrepreneurs found opportunity in the developing community on the waters of Sturgeon Bay. #cityspotlight #doorcounty #365DaysOfHistory - @historypress on Instagram

When NYC was attacked on September 11, 2001, more than half a million people became trapped at the southern tip of Manhattan. There was wide spread confusion and tunnels, bridges and highways were shut down. There was no way out... The Coast Guard quickly realized they needed as much help as possible and got on the radio “CALLING ALL BOATS” Out of the blue unexpected saviors came to the rescue: American mariners. TowBoatUS Towers from City Island, Bay Shore, Sandy Hook and Tarry Town were a few of the many boaters who heeded the call. These brave boaters ran towards danger when others were running away. In 9 hours more than 500,000 American souls were safely evacuated. Not all heroes wear capes, some wear a Captains hat. #neverforget #911boatlift #boats #towinglife #boattow #boatphotography #boatride #boatinglife #boater #boatlife #boatingfun #boatinglifestyle #boatadventures #boatallday #lifeonthewater #lovemyboat #boatingseason #boatlove #boatcaptain #redisready #boatsofinstagram - @boatus on Instagram

On 19 November 1944, Shinano was formally commissioned at Yokosuka, having spent the previous two weeks fitting out and performing sea trials. Worried about her safety after a U.S. reconnaissance bomber fly-over, the Navy General Staff ordered Shinano to depart for Kure by no later than 28 November, where the remainder of her fitting-out would take place. Abe asked for a delay in the sailing date as the majority of her watertight doors had yet to be installed, the compartment air tests had not been conducted, and many holes in the compartment bulkheads for electrical cables, ventilation ducts and pipes had not been sealed. Importantly, fire mains and bailing systems lacked pumps and were inoperable; even though most of the crew had sea-going experience, they lacked training in the portable pumps on board. The escorting destroyers, Isokaze, Yukikaze and Hamakaze, had just returned from the Battle of Leyte Gulf and required more than three days to conduct repairs and to allow their crews to recuperate. - @world_ofwarship_13 on Instagram

August 30, 1943. A special day at Portsmouth Navy Yard as two brand new fleet boats are prepared for launching on the same morning. Balao-class boats USS BANG(SS-385) and USS PILOTFISH(SS-386). USS BANG would be credited by JANAC with 8 ships sunk for 20,181 tons. She would be transferred to Spain in 1972, and scrapped in 1983 after a long career. USS PILOTFISH wouldnt be credited with any sinkings in her five war patrols, however, she did perform life guard duty on many occasions, performing well in this capacity. She would hold the distinction of participating in the official surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay. This was probably the height of PILOTFISHs career. She just never seemed able to pick up the scent trail of a target worth a torpedo. Herself would be deemed a target worth an atomic bomb in 1946, serving as a target for Operation Crossroads at Bikini Atoll. Her wreck remains there to this day. #subpac #subpacww2 #submarinewarfare #pacificwar #thepacificwar #thesilentservice #submarine #submarines #warpatrol #ww2 #worldwartwo #thesecondworldwar #usnavy #usn #navy #1943 #ussbang #ss385 #usspilotfish #ss386 #balaoclass #fleetboat #history #atomicbomb #abomb #shipstagram - @subpac_ww2 on Instagram

The two surviving Littorio-class battleships Italia (formerly lead ship Littorio, shown closest to the camera) and Vittorio Veneto after reaching Malta in September 1943. Their sister ship Roma, which had been flagship of the Commander in Chief, Naval Battle Forces, Admiral Carlo Bergamini, was sunk by a pair of German PC 1400 X guided glider bombs, dropped from Dornier Do 217s while the contingent was en route from La Spezia. This loss of fleet leadership made for a tricky situation within the remaining ships, proceeding cautiously into the unknown only a day after orders arrived to sail for an Allied port instead of resisting invasion. They were met by their escorting Allied ships on the 10th, and arrived in Malta the next day. Breechblocks were removed, except for anti-aircraft guns, and an Allied presence was initially established aboard; there had been thoughts of scuttling upon arrival, but these intentions were subjugated by the placing of the battleships under the senior Italian officer at Malta, Admiral Alberto de Zara. aboard the battleship Caio Duilio, which had arrived from Taranto the previous day. - The two surviving Littorios were moved to Alexandria beginning on 14 September, along with the bulk of the fleet that had come over to the Allies at Malta; most of them would return to Italian ports in short order, to rejoin the fight after Italy’s declaration of war against Germany on 13 October. The Littorios were not so lucky, and were shuttled off to the Great Bitter Lake for several years of internment. Though there was talk of sending them to the Far East against Japan as the core of an Italian Allied Task Force, the requisite equipment installations, systems compatibility conversions, and subsequent training would have kept them from the Pacific Theater until at least the end of 1946, and the plans were discarded. - @haze_grey_history on Instagram

FS Dunkerque ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque was the lead ship of Dunkerque Class Battleship built for the French Navy in the 1930s. The class also included Strasbourg. The two ships were the first capital ship to be built by the French Navy after WW1; the planned Normandie and Lyon Classes had been cancelled at the outbreak of war, and budgetary problems prevented the French from building new battleships in the decade after the war. Dunkerque was laid down in December 1932, was launched October 1935, and was completed in May 1937. She was armed with a main battery of eight 330mm/50 modéle 1931 gun, arranged in two quadruple gun turrets and had a top speed of 29.5 knots (54.6 km/h; 33.9 mph) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dunkerque and Strasbourg formed the French Navys 1ère Division de Ligne (1st Division of the Line) prior the Second World War. The two ships searched for German commerce raiders in the early months of the war, and Dunkerque also participated in convoy escort duties. The ship was badly damaged during the British attack after the Armistice that ended the first phase of Frances participation in WW2, but she was refloated and partially repaired to return to Toulon for comprehensive repairs. Dunkerque was scyttled in November 1942 to prevent her capture by the Germans, and subsequently seized and partially scrapped by the Italians and later the Germans. Her wreck remained in Toulon until she was stricken in 1955, and scrapped three years later. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Weapon : 8 x 330 mm (13.in) guns 16 x 130mm DP guns 8 × single 37mm AA guns 32 × 13,2mm AA machine guns ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- #fs #fsdunkerque #dunkerque #france #french #ww2 #history #ship #battleship #navy #frenchnavy - @worldhistory_id on Instagram

A little history lesson looking at the ‘Super J’, Ranger - the fastest of all the American J’s. 1️⃣ Starling Burgess and Olin J Stephens designed Ranger for Harold Vanderbilt’s 1937 America’s Cup defence against Sir Thomas Sopwith’s Endeavour II. 2️⃣ Built from high grade steel, Ranger was launched on 11th May 1937. Disaster struck on the delivery trip from Maine to Newport when rigging parts fell from the mast whilst under tow. Nothing could be done at that stage of the delivery and the top 30 broke off. Fortunately, a new aluminium mast built for Rainbow was loaned to the project and used throughout the Defender series until Rangers mast could be repaired. 3️⃣ Ranger went on to prove conclusively that she was the fastest of all the American yachts. She beat the British challenger Endeavour II 4-0 at Newport, Rhode Island. It was the last time J-class yachts would race for the Americas Cup. 4️⃣ By the end of 1941, Ranger, which had been laid up with all the other US Js, was scrapped. 5️⃣ The Ranger that sails today is a replica built to the original lines drawings in steel and launched at the Danish Yacht shipyard in Skagen, Denmark in 2003. Find out more about Ranger and the other J Class yachts on the website.
