Late last year we announced that 93-year-old Joseph Barone, the longtime owner of the beloved Journal Square Pub, had sold the business. At the time, the future owners, Jersey City natives Sebastian and Frank Cupo provided little details about their plans for the neighborhood staple. We will incorporate some food with the bar and create a whole new different environment there said Cupo at the time. Its something that needs to be thought of as we go along, to see what could serve the market right now and plan ahead for later on. About two weeks ago, the pub quietly closed for deep cleaning, according to a sign posted on the door. The team has done a lot in a short amount of time and now the refreshed concept is ready to debut. Yesterday, Jersey Digs got a peek inside of what is now called JSQ Lounge to see first hand what the update will bring. The new concept celebrates the bars historic past while positioning it for a bright future. It also emphasizes Jersey City. The Cupos were born and raised here, and as they describe it, its a Jersey City bar for Jersey City, by Jersey City. Were not New Yorkers coming in and telling the neighborhood what it needs. Were from Jersey City and want to create a place welcoming to longtime residents and newcomers alike, said Cupo. Beyond the deep cleaning, JSQ Lounge will also reopen featuring an updated design aesthetic. With fresh coats of paint throughout and a focus on vintage decor, locals will feel right at home at this welcoming addition to the neighborhood. Frank and Sebastian Cupo provided vintage photos displayed throughout, showcasing a range of true Jersey City history with photos of both their family and the city itself. A glittering disco ball hangs from the center of the ceiling, original Tube Bar. The bar is also much brighter now, partly Sebastians own collection, thoughtfully installed throughout and theres also a neon wall clock that dates back to the thanks to an array of beautiful vintage light fixtures, the space. New article for @shape, How to Create an Inclusive Environment In the Wellness Space. ⠀ When you seek only diversity and you treat it like a box you need to check off, you might get diversity, but you will likely miss the mark when it comes to inclusion. In fact, when diversity is approached in that manner, it can lead to environments that are actually harmful for BIPOC, especially when individuals who havent done anti-racism work in their own lives are leading the charge for creating inclusive environments. If individuals havent examined their own implicit bias or done the work of dismantling white supremacy in their lives, they can and will engage in racist behavior, often without meaning to, even when they have the best intentions. ⠀ Inclusion isnt a buzzword or a business strategy, it takes real work, a commitment to change, and a willingness to cede power. Ceding power, which is absolutely required for inclusion and equity, often feels like oppression to individuals who are used to privilege. However, its impossible to have an inclusive environment without social justice at the core of your value system. If you arent actively demanding justice for all bodies, especially the most at risk, while simultaneously inviting individuals from all backgrounds to the leadership table, you arent doing the work required to create inclusion. ⠀ Inclusion is not inviting BIPOC into white-led and white-centered organizations and hoping they feel welcome. WOW! So the series 12 trailer is here (i’m a little late to the party) and it definitely has a lot for us to get excited about! It showed both comedic and serious sides to the series, something which I am really excited to see as I felt s11 lacked more of the serious elements. The villains look so exciting! There was a mix of both new and old including the Judoon and the Cybermen and they look to have quite an important storyline! The ‘fam’ look just as they did last series, full of energy and always there to help the Doctor but I just hope we see some more character development this series with them! And of course the Doctor herself... she honestly stole the trailer as she did with the last series! My main hope for series 12 is that the storylines do her amazing character justice a bit better than they did in s11! What’s everyone else’s thought? Doing this interview was very nerve-racking for me. When we started off I was physically shaking - I can hear it in my voice. Why? Ive never been big on having parties or making a big deal out of my birthday but my amazing wife threw me surprise after surprise and made sure that I celebrated this milestone. Ive had a lot of successes and a lot of failures over the years but falling from 13,000 feet in the sky brings new perspective. Im grateful for a new day everyday! Thank you to everyone that called, texted, flew in town, tried to fly in town, popped up on my throughout the city, and risked it all to come to a small gathering to celebrate with me! 2020 has thrown us all a nasty curveball but Im still swinging for the fences. When I first moved to California in my young twenties I was getting by scraping the barrel. I first met HUF shortly after he launched the shoe brand, and he offered to give me shoes, (which I couldn’t afford). He helped me with shoes, socks, underwear, clothes etc for years. I feel like a broken record here because every time I ever ran into Keith I would just thank him and tell him how much I appreciated what he did for me. As much as I think back on how much I thanked him, I still have never or could never thank him enough. What a crazy last two months for me. With moving, changing bases, driving from Arizona to Seattle with a uhaul ,working (4 )six day blocks back to back with one day off in between each,celebrating my one-year anniversary, completing ground school recurrent certification yesterday 🙌 and then beginning a new 4 day trip starting today. I am deeply thinking about all the folks we did not get to see this season. The volume of that void is real. Some of our most beloved friends have been unable to make it to the island this summer - we have held them in our hearts. Now, we are grieving during this time of disruption- when we lose someone during Covid we cannot gather and have a wake or a funeral. That makes for a higher level of disconnect in an already awful time. So I am writing to process- Every night we run thru the guests joining us for the evening with our team during preshift meeting- when we opened 29 years ago we consciously decided to use the term PPX instead of VIP - the term came from my internship in Provence “PPX,” personne particulierement extraordinaire, PPX served two purposes to let the team know someone who was extra magical was joining us and if someone looked at the book they would not know what the term meant. The presence of a PPX guest elevated the evening - each year I would try to explain the difference in clearer terms. It had nothing to do with the money guests spent - the true value was the relationship and connection to our style of hospitality. PPX guests are simply our people, they know us, we know them, we become family and the restaurant is a home for them. A haven they think about when we are not together - the Folks in this photo are my people - the hardest part isI have not seen any of these folks in person since this time of times began. No hugs, no distanced connection. I have seen them virtually and that has brought me great joy. Now our collective hearts ache with the news of the departure of Steve Mantelli from this realm on earth.. Steve was from another time and I looked forward to seeing him each holiday weekend and when he would come down during the summer with this amazing group. Cheers to a life full of so much LOVE, laughter - your giggle, your radio voice and the twinkle in your eyes will glow forever.. It turns out that it is possible to shoot a short film with a cast and crew of over twenty while still following British Film Commission (BFC) guidelines. But is it still as enjoyable of an experience if everyone is masked up and giving a wide berth? Worthily Films would argue yes. When the BFC finalised the ‘COVID-19 Production Guidelines’ at the end of May, the team at Worthily Films were already a few months into itching to make the move from development into pre-production, and getting back on set. ‘Waiting for Time,’ a script written by Paul Chronnell, was to be the vehicle we would use to find out just how difficult shooting a socially-distanced film would be – and on Super16 film, no less. This was a script that had incredible emotional investment from the start, so it could have been a risky choice to attempt filming as we all really wanted to do justice by it. However, we knew that it would just compel us to work harder and push ourselves to creatively overcome any obstacles. Preparation is always important, nay, vital, during pre-production but this was arguably the step that we had to be the most careful with to ensure that everyone felt comfortable going forward with this film shoot. This made the difference between a skittish cast and crew and one that felt that all precautions were in place and all scenarios had been considered. Read the full article on Film Industry Network. Hi friends. I need your attention/assistance! I’m working with my friend Damion Turner (aka Beyonce) 27, Black, queer, non-binary from Jamaica seeking asylum in the US/NY to help raise some $ to make it through the year. Gofundme is in my bio. anything you can give is really helpful and sharing too helps. . I met Damion (they/them) in Jamaica 4 years ago while we were filming GAYCATION doc series. They were part of a group of queer homeless youth living on the streets there. . I’ve been working with them the past 3 weeks in Brooklyn to raise money and to secure a room to rent. So far, we were able to raise enough money to get Damion secure in a room in Brooklyn for a few months! . At age 13, Damion was thrown out of their home and community for being queer. They had to start living on the streets and remained homeless for over 10 years. In March 2019, Damion was legally presented at the Mexico border and applied for asylum based on LGBTQ persecution in Jamaica. They have a good immigration lawyer in the case. However, due to the Trump Administrations policy towards immigrants, asylum in the US has become a very difficult process. And shortly after their arrival, Covid19 hit NYC and postponed their asylum court hearing and created other unforeseen hurdles. . They are unable to work at the moment, but their work authorization is pending for soon in 2020 (fingers crossed) and will be able to work soon. They have been taking classes to get GED and gearing up to take a course to become a Patient Care Technician. . It’s Tuesday! So why not do a post about #Tobias! I’m so blessed I got to be both an actor, and a fan, inside this #WalkingDead universe! To work with @kimdickens was nothing short of incredible and exciting - she’s the BEST! Adam Davidson was a fantastic director - getting to see @galeannehurd in action on set was SO cool!
