Trying to understand my aunt’s recurrence of stage 4 pancreatic cancer (with my family being her caregiver), I want to share with you the tips that resonates with me. It’s a huge mental & physical stress on everyone; unfortunately most of us will be directly or indirectly effected by it, as nearly 1 in 2 Canadians develop cancer in their lifetime. There are many ways you can help someone who has cancer: - Listen first, there’s no need to offer advice or opinions unless you’re asked. - Learn about the type of cancer they have, it might be draining for them emotionally & physically to explain again & again. - Prepare yourself for changes in how they’ll look & act as may have lost hair or weight, and exhausted from treatments. - Make sure the time is right for you to visit especially during COVID, give them a chance to decline. Never take it personally if they or their caregiver is suddenly too tired, cranky or ill. - Let them be sad. Even if treatment seems to be going well, they may start talking about serious things like funeral plans. You can help by listening. Then encourage them to talk things over with their loved ones or psychologist. - If they cry, don’t try to stop them. Reassure them that it’s OK to cry. As upsetting as it is for you to watch, tears are a natural response to distress & may be a very important release for them. - Don’t forget their caregivers need help too, being the main support for someone with cancer can be exhausting. - Understand every diagnosis is unique. You simply cannot predict how they are feeling or know what they’re going through. Respect their moods & respect how they choose to cope. Het zette direct heel Twitter en Instagram in de fik, dus kwamen twee van deze artiesten in de belangrijkste praatprogramma’s op televisie om verdere tekst en uitleg te geven. How does stress impact the skin physiologically? Psychological stress and skin are closely linked, I often say to my patients ‘stress causes skin disease and skin disease causes stress’. The brain has a stress-activated pathway that causes release of various chemicals and hormones that drive inflammation both in the body and the skin. Feelings of emotional distress lead to the release of a stress hormone (cortisol), which is known to affect the immune system (making the skin less able to defend itself), drive allergic responses, delay healing and disrupt the skin’s natural barrier. The effects seen on the skin can vary, including feeling red, dry and itchy, as well as the formation of lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, signs of premature aging and dull skin. Short-term stress (e.g. feeling anxious before a presentation/exam) can cause temporary problems like flushing, itching and sweating. Long-term (or chronic) stress however results in the body entering a permanent ‘stress-response’ state, which can aggravate existing skin problems through a poor natural immune response and ongoing inflammation. For example, high levels of stress are associated with a higher severity of skin disease in people with #psoriasis and #eczema.
