They cut through all the pathetic cruelty and hypocrisy with the sheer power of color and shape. The ones I can think of now are Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, Toni Morrison, Mikhail Bulgakov, Jean Michel Basquiat, Francisco Goya, Billie Holiday, Thomas Houseago, George Clinton, and Nick Cave. The countless hours I have spent enrapt in a cocoon of feeling, hypnotized by any one of Nick Cave’s musical incarnations are an anchor for my survival. Life update for mental health stuff, it’s long, felt cute, might delete later. . . . . . Ok. So I’m just trying to alleviate some pressure here. My hope is that putting this all out into the world will lighten the load of some of the guilt, shame, and denial I’ve been carrying the past two years. This is a journal entry that I’m putting in public because I need to not care who sees it. I am a dramatic writing major and I made a mistake in high school when I decided to leave performing behind. And then I kept making that mistake every time afterward that I pushed down that want in an attempt to convince myself that it wasn’t a mistake. Because I was ashamed of having made a mistake. College, the first big choice you make in your entire life, a misfire. At first, I thought it’d be okay to dismiss that dream as something totally unattainable. But seeing so many friends either from high school or at NYU pursuing it so unabashedly made me realize that maybe it wasn’t an absolute impossibility. Or even if it was, that I should have at least tried. So I’m going to now. I’m staying in my major. I’ll see that to the end because when I do write I do love it. But I’ll also start calling myself an actor even if I feel like I don’t deserve it. I’ll go to classes outside of school. Because fuck it I have to try. Grave Encounters flashbacks. Age 24 at the time we shot for 12 Nights. With 3 nights of rehearsals. Was deeply inspired by Incident at Lake County, Blair Witch Project and PA... And the many Ghost Hunting TV shows we would parody. Funny story... We couldn’t find distribution fast enough, so Stu and I leaked the trailer we cut and it went viral on YouTube. It was wild waking up to millions more views everyday on it. Also at our buyers screening in LA delux beyond fucked up our blu-Ray and the 5.1 mix we had just obsessed over for a month was a bad stereo down mix —and all of our work making the sound terrifying was only coming out of the front speakers of the Theater!! Ah it was painful to watch the film play so quiet and so muted to buyers. Lacking the effect we knew it had. But in the end we played @tribeca (with proper sound) and the rest is history. Happy 25th wedding anniversary, husband!! TWENTY FIVE years!! So crazy. Almost 30 that weve been together! Holy crunk. Our wedding was at Lounge Ax. Some of the things I remember about that day: It was packed! And it was boiling! Nine Months was playing at the Biograph across the street, which was apropos because preggers. We couldnt have done it without Julia/Bulia. She planned just about everything! Dave Max Crawford miraculously formed an amazing marching band like 2 second before the wedding and thats what we marched down the aisle to. Dave Max Crawford and Jeff were wearing the same suit. Jeffs cost $10.00. Not sure what Dave Maxs cost. Our beloved waitress Lana married us. There was an apartment above Lounge Ax where we set up Marty Perez to take photos. We asked people to go up there during the party to have their pictures taken. Unbeknownst to us, our friend Scott Reilly stayed up there most of the night and placed himself in almost every single picture. He is evil. Its pretty hilarious, but he is evil. We got married on stage and it was decorated all Elvis-y. We hired staff from Schubas to work the party so our staff could be guests. We accidentally got married on the only day of the year youre not supposed to get married if youre jewish. Were jewish. The bands first song was Shotgun. My dad made one of his long, emotional, and weepy speeches. He could still see then. Wah. Jeffs dad brought his own beer. To a bar. Haha. Our beloved bartender Kevin made the now appearing for the first time ever.... sign in the window. Jeff looked 12. My dads friends Sam (wah) and Merwin were hilarious in the video. We had a beautiful cake which we did not shmush in each others faces. The audio in our wedding video cuts out during the ceremony, therefore I have no memory of what we said. Oy, Im weeping looking at all the photos and missing everyone who is no longer with us. Waaaaaaaaaah. Anyhoo......Happy 25th to my sweet husband. From the beginning of the novel, when Gogol was born, his name was always a struggle. Ashima had the baby and a tradition in India was to have the grandparents name it. His parents were forced to put Gogol down on his birth certificate because they had not received his real name from his grandparents yet. As the novel progressed, Gogol became accustomed to this pet name and became confused when his parents told him that was only to be used around family, while he would have a real name in public. After being forced to spend a few months in India, Gogol realized he did not like his Indian traditions and never understood why they were so important when his family lived in America. He even comes to a point where he switches his name to Nikhil, so he will feel accepted. Gogol progressed towards the end of the novel when his father tells him how he received his name. After the death of his father, he comes back to the novel he received as a boy. Todays word is Drogo Baggins!! Drogo Baggins was born in TE 2908, the eldest son of Fosco Baggins and brother of Dora Baggins and Dudo Baggins. He was also a second cousin of Bilbo Baggins. He married Primula Brandibuck and they had an only child, Frodo Baggins. After his marriage, he lived in Bucks Land and often stayed at Villa Brandy, where his father-in-law, Gorbadoc Brandibuck, used to offer succulent and plentiful banquets. Drogo and his wife died when Frodo was only twelve years old. Drogo drowned in the Brandivino River during a boat trip, but the dynamics of the accident are unclear. some say wickedly that it was Drogos weight that caused the boat to sink, others that Primula pushed her husband out of the boat and he, clinging to her, took it with him. Project by Sarah Charette Featuring artist Erika DeFreitas Supervised by Dr. Kirsty Robertson Virtual Closing Reception: TBA “In August of 1988, my grandmother Eileen Garland moved into 1113 Aldea Ave, Ottawa, and discovered a set of photo negatives in one of the bedrooms. Naturally, she had them developed almost immediately and was given a collection of 24 images cataloguing a young persons’ drunken house party. Eileen did not recognize anyone in the photographs, and more confusingly, the interior of 1113 Aldea Ave does not resemble any of the backdrops in the photographs either – which include some classic 1970s finishes, like an absurdly vibrant wallpaper in what appears to be the kitchen. So, we must wonder, who are these people? Where were they photographed? How did the negatives end up in Eileen’s house? And who thought to bring a camera, especially at a time when photographs were permanent, physical objects, rather than the digital files of today? And why did Eileen hold on to these photographs for more than 20 years? This collection of found photography brings forward notions of familiarity, memory, voyeurism, and distance. How do we make meaning from others’ memories, especially those that have been spatially displaced? Agency can be present in images regardless of the identities of the individuals shown, but how do we interpret this agency? How do we make meaning from the faces of those whom we do not know? Erika DeFreitas’ artworks function to provide another perspective on familiarity and distance. Placing an emphasis on process, gesture, the body, documentation, and paranormal phenomena, she works through attempts to understand concepts of loss, post-memory, inheritance, and objecthood. Music From Memory is turning 50! Beyond happy to finally announce no less than our 50th release since we kicked things off back in 2013! This time with a special release we’ve been working on for some time now: VA - Virtual Dreams: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, 1993-1997 (3xLP/2xCD) is the first in a series of compilations, alongside more in depth artist-focused releases, which will delve into music produced during the 1990’s that redefined the boundaries of ‘Ambient’. This was music that explored the concept of Ambient within a new setting, created often by House & Techno music producers for a world beyond dance floors but made very much with the pre and post-clubbing listener in mind. Returning to our own first discoveries of Ambient music in the 90s we’ve been revisiting some personal favourites as well as rediscovering amazing music from a youth spent watching Chill-out videos on VHS, staying up all night to watch MTV’s Chill Out Zone as well as some of our earliest dabbles in local record stores. From Ambient and Chill-out classics, to lesser known one-off projects, as well as Ambient deviations by some of House and Techno’s leading producers, volume one of Virtual Dreams features tracks by Bedouin Ascent, LA Synthesis, LFO, Marc Hollander, Mark Pritchard & Kirsty Hawkshaw, Richard H. 20 años de exilio (20 years of exile) . As a theatre student, #covid19 was a huge problem for me and my team. We had to stop our classes and due to quarantine, we couldnt even meet up for practice or rehearsals. But that wasnt going to stop us at all. Thanks to the incredible team over at @escuelaremiendo we rethought the study plan for the next months. Since we knew we wouldnt have the chance to act in a stage or in front of any public we took the decision to take a leap of faith and record a film. Our knowledge on the topic of filmography was scarce, but we were willing to give it a shot and have fun while trying. . With a bit of work, we adapted the script and finally met up once quarantine was over to film the movie. It is now filmed and being edited slowly and carefully so that we can release it around September, with all the love we have for acting. . Beautiful souls come and go from our lives, and as much as it hurts, it feels like there’s little we can do about it. This week, I’m dedicating Australiana By Night to the talented, charming, and much loved Mike Noga who has left a hole in our hearts with his early departure from this mortal coil. I’ll be playing songs from his solo albums, some also playing songs from other beloved Australian songwriters and musicians who have left us too soon, Spencer P Jones, Brian Henry Hooper, Rowland S. Howard, Conway Savage, Mick Hart, Dave McComb, Grant Mclennan, Bon Scott, Chris Wilson, James Cruikshank (The Cruel Sea), Stevie Plunder (The Plunderers), Andy Lewis (The Gadflys), Cheyne Gelagin (The Simpletons), and BATERZ. Yes, this is a list of men. Young to middle aged men dying from disease, heart attack, drugs, alcohol, suicide...how do we take better care of these beautiful, sensitive souls while they are still with us? We need our poets more than ever, and we need to hold onto men who live with empathy, compassion and love, not lose them before their time. Could we give them something to hold onto? To help them love themselves more, to give back, to lend a hand, or an ear, even when it isn’t asked for. I am really directing these questions to other men, women have been taking care of us for years. It’s time for us to step up and support each other better, to transform the culture between men, to make it a place of support and care, rather than self loathing and competition. It’s not going to be easy. But I’m committed to it. I’d welcome anyone who would like to discuss this. And any other artist suggestions for my radio show are welcome too.
